Although hepatitis C virus (HCV) can be cleared, very few infected persons complete the treatment, resulting in disease progression and transmission. Motivational interventions effectively address health and substance-use-related conditions in many cultures. The research team piloted an HCV treatment motivational enhancement training and supervision for four counselors treating four patients in one (of 11) large methadone programs in Israel between 2007 and 2008. The counselors received a 3-day training followed by seven supervision sessions. Training included cultural and language adaptation

BACKGROUND: Due to the high prevalence of alcohol related disorders (dependent, harmful and at risk drinking) the improvement of the outpatient treatment situation in this area is of major importance. The aim of this study was to examine the treatment structure and modalities of patients with alcohol related disorders in counseling centers for substance abusers based on the questioning of the counselors.
METHODS: A 3-page questionnaire to characterize the institution and six standardized 10-page questionnaires (for the counselors) were sent to all counseling centers (n = 123) in Baden-Württem

OBJECTIVE: To describe the communication of polygenic risk scores (PRS) in the familial breast cancer setting.
METHODS: Consultations between genetic healthcare providers (GHP) and female patients who received their PRS for breast cancer risk were recorded (n = 65). GHPs included genetic counselors (n = 8) and medical practitioners (n = 5) (i.e. clinical geneticists and oncologists). A content analysis was conducted and logistic regression was used to assess differences in communication behaviors between genetic counselors (n = 8) and medical practitioners (n = 5).
RESULTS: Of the 65 patient

As part of an 1988-89 evaluation of New Jersey's newly established HIV Notification Assistance Program (NAP), data were collected concerning number of HIV+ persons providing contact names; contact characteristics; reactions to NAP of HIV counselors, their clients, and of notified contacts; and program costs. There was initial resistance to the program both from HIV counselors and their clients. By mid-1989, acceptance of the program by referring HIV counselors had increased. The proportion of HIV+ clients who referred contacts was still low, but had increased to 10%. 160 contacts were notified

This study is based on interviews with Southern lesbian and gay young adults and survey data from school counselors and prospective teachers living in the South. The essay explores adolescents' perceptions of the beliefs and abilities of school counselors and teachers with regard to issues of homosexuality and the treatment of gay and lesbian students. As a complement and a contrast, it also presents educators' personal beliefs about homosexuality, and how these attitudes are actualized in the schools. One major conclusion is that while school counselors and, to a lesser extent, classroom teac

Background: Providers of sexual health services play an important role in counseling persons at risk of acquiring HIV. The aim of the present study was to investigate the knowledge of and attitudes toward HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among counselors in non-governmental counseling centers ("NG counseling centers") and in counseling centers of the local health authorities ("local health offices") in Germany and to determine the extent to which PrEP plays a role in their current counseling practice. Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire was conducted am

Many drug treatment programs have difficulty recruiting, retaining, and successfully treating minority clients. Coupled with the fact that cultural diversity among clients is likely to increase, this consideration makes it critical that counselors systematically consider the client's ethnic and racial background during treatment. Experienced clinicians have recommended a number of approaches that counselors can adopt for increasing their cultural responsiveness to minority clients, thereby improving treatment effectiveness with this population of substance abusers.

Little research has been conducted on patients' experiences inside the predictive genetics clinic. In this clinic, a person with a familial risk of inheriting a rare disease seeks a test that will provide them with information about their future health. Counselors combine gentle challenges with neutral approaches to educate and counsel patients wanting to take the predictive test. We conducted ethnographic observations of predictive genetics clinics for Huntington's Disease in England and Wales. Four content categories were prominent throughout the analysis, which we present in this paper: con

Genomic tests regularly produce Variants of Uncertain Significance (VUS), mutations of which currently little is known but may turn out to be disease-causing. The communication of such variants in the United States is typically delegated to genetic counsellors. Based on in-depth interviews, we examined this communication as an indicator of the genetic counsellor's professional status: did they take a subordinate position by reporting out the results as provided by laboratories or did they assert professional authority by interpreting and possibly reducing the uncertainty of VUS results? We fou

INTRODUCTION: Though telephone counseling is a modality commonly used to promote health behavior change, including tobacco cessation, specific counselor and participant behaviors that indicate engagement and therapeutic alliance remain poorly characterized in the literature. We sought to explore smokers' and counselors' engagement and rapport-building behaviors in telephone counseling for smoking cessation and patterns of these behaviors by smokers' psychiatric symptoms.
METHODS: The study team transcribed, audio-recorded tobacco cessation counseling calls for the presence of engagement and r

An interdisciplinary treatment team approach is considered the standard of care for individuals with eating disorders; however, there is limited research on the efficacy of such teams. This study used retrospective chart review to compare client characteristics and treatment utilization for college students treated with psychotherapy alone versus an interdisciplinary treatment team approach (i.e., a mental health counselor, a physician, and a dietitian). Clients with prior counseling histories, a bulimia nervosa diagnosis, or a personality disorder diagnosis were more likely to be referred to

OBJECTIVE: We describe the effects of structural intervention to enhance the quality of HIV test counseling interaction with men who have sex with men (MSM) in San Francisco.
METHODS: Audio recordings of 28 rapid HIV test sessions by seven counselors were collected in two phases: before and after implementation of a waiting room intervention prior to the session. The sessions were analyzed using sequence maps to visualize and compare the sequence and distribution of four activities: counseling, information delivery, data collection, and sample collection.
RESULTS: Prior to the intervention,

The field of cancer genetic testing has made great advances in correctly identifying patients at risk for hereditary cancer syndromes. These tests, used during a genetic consultation, promote earlier detection of cancer and potentially increase survival. Despite these advancements, a large number of persons at risk for BRCA1/2 mutations remain untested due to a shortage of genetic counselors and lack of clinician knowledge on how to properly screen, identify, and refer patients to genetic counseling. We suggest team-based practices that physician associates/assistants (PAs) and NPs can use in

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals have been found to have elevated rates of substance use disorders when compared with heterosexuals. However, little is known about the challenges a sexual minority might face in presenting for substance use treatment. In this study, treatment providers' attitudes toward LGBT individuals were assessed among a sample of 46 substance abuse treatment counselors who provide publicly funded treatment. Participants completed both explicit measures of heterosexist bias and an implicit measure designed to assess for biases that exist at an auto

This grounded theory study gathered descriptions the bereavement experience for adults with intellectual disabilities (IDD) through the eyes and voices of a small sample of grief counselors. The counselors described bereaved adults with IDD as individuals who faced potentially heightened effects of the broken attachment bonds, increased risk of coping obstacles, long histories of unrecognized losses, and disenfranchised grief. The participants described bereaved adults with IDD (who sought treatment) as getting pushed to the sidelines to deal with their losses in isolation and confusion. It be

Nineteen staff and clients in a Native American healing lodge were interviewed regarding the therapeutic approach used to address the legacy of Native American historical trauma. On the basis of thematic content analysis of interviews, 4 components of healing discourse emerged. First, clients were understood by their counselors to carry pain, leading to adult dysfunction, including substance abuse. Second, counselors believed that such pain must be confessed in order to purge its deleterious influence. Third, the cathartic expression of such pain was said by counselors to inaugurate lifelong h

To assess the extent to which the results reported by Warner and Bradley (1991) can be generalized beyond the population of undergraduate psychology students, 132 adults in the metropolitan Harrisburg area were asked to evaluate the competency and traits of clinical psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and psychiatrists. Results indicated that the general public believed counselors to be more caring than psychologists and psychiatrists. All three professional groups were perceived to be comparable in their ability to treat the least severe disorders. Licensed counselors were percei

Intimate partner violence (IPV) undermines women's uptake of HIV services and violates their human rights. In a two-arm randomized controlled trial we evaluated a short intervention that went a step beyond IPV screening to discuss violence and power with women receiving HIV testing services during antenatal care (ANC). The intervention included training and support for HIV counselors, a take-home card for clients, and an on-site IPV counselor. One third (35%) of women (N = 688) reported experiencing IPV in the past year; 6% were living with HIV. Among women experiencing IPV, program participan

The therapeutic alliance is a well-established predictor of psychotherapy outcomes. With the advancement of digitization, guided internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) has demonstrated effectiveness. However, the conceptual framework of the digital therapeutic alliance (DTA) within ICBT remains conceptually underdeveloped. Data were collected from a guided ICBT program in China. We conducted virtual individual semi-structured in-depth interviews among a purposive sample of intervention recipients (young sexual minority men, n = 20), and all implementers (counselors and supervisors,

The Cancer Risk Education Intervention Tool (CREdIT) is a computer-based (non-interactive) slide presentation designed to educate low-literacy, and ethnically and racially diverse public hospital patients at risk of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) about genetics. To qualitatively evaluate participants' experience with and perceptions of a genetic education program as an adjunct to genetic counseling, we conducted direct observations of the intervention, semi-structured in person interviews with 11 women who viewed CREdIT, and post-counseling questionnaires with the two participatin
