Validating CRAVED: a brief screening instrument for ultra-processed food addiction.

BACKGROUND: Addictive-like eating behaviours related to ultra-processed foods have gained increasing research and clinical attention. The Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) is the most widely used measure of food addiction. It was primarily designed as research tool, so its length and scoring complexity may limit routine clinical use. CRAVED is a brief six-item screening tool developed to assess core addiction-related eating behaviours using a simple yes/no response format. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to provide a preliminary psychometric evaluation of CRAVED. METHODS: A cross-sectional second

Effect of inhibition of reactivated alcohol-associated memories with propranolol on alcohol craving.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol craving and relapse occur after the reactivation of alcohol reward memory. Previous studies suggest that drug-associated memory undergoes reconsolidation once retrieved by drug-associated stimuli. This study hypothesized that propranolol administration during memory reconsolidation induced by conditioned stimulus (CS) would significantly attenuate alcohol craving. METHODS: A total of 40 patients with alcohol dependence who met the diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence in DSMV were enrolled. The patients were randomized located into the memory retrievalpropranolol grou

Tobacco Images Choice and Its Association with Craving and Dependence in Cigarette Smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Increased salience of drug-related cues over non-drug reinforcers can drive drug use and contribute to tobacco use disorder (TUD). An important scientific and clinical goal is to effectively measure this elevated drug-seeking behavior in TUD. However, most TUD assessments rely on self-reported cravings and cigarette consumption, not providing an objective measure of the impact of drug-cues on biasing behavior towards drugs. The probabilistic image choice (PIC) task investigates the choice of viewing drug-related pictures as compared to other salient pictures (e.g., pleasant and u

The impact of opioid-stimulant co-use on tonic and cue-induced craving.

The twin opioid-stimulant epidemics have led to increased overdose deaths and present unique challenges for individuals entering treatment with opioid-stimulant polysubstance use. This study examined tonic and cue-induced craving as a primary outcome among persons in substance use treatment who reported primary substances of opioids, methamphetamine, or cocaine. The sample consisted of 1974 individuals in 55 residential substance-use treatment centers in the United States in 2021. Weekly surveys were delivered via a third-party outcomes tracking system, including measures of tonic and cue-indu

Psychometric properties of the shortened Farsi version of the Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait.

BACKGROUND: Food craving contributes to the incidence of weight and food-related disorders. Thus, an accurate measurement of food craving is important for clinical and research purposes. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the shortened Farsi version of the Food Craving Questionnaire- Trait (FCQ-T-r), an internationally validated tool. METHODS: For this cross-sectional study, data was collected from 153 students of the University of Tehran between February and March 2019 using the Farsi version of FCQ-T-r; Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21); and the Quality

A transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol for decreasing the craving of methamphetamine-dependent patients.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique. Many substance use disorders lack effective treatments, and TMS is expected to reduce cravings and risk of relapse by regulating brain function. Here, we introduce three alternative TMS settings and specific operations to interfere with methamphetamine use disorders. Theoretically, this protocol can also be applied to diseases with similar brain damage characteristics. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Chen et al. (2020).

Factors modulating the incubation of drug and non-drug craving and their clinical implications.

It was suggested in 1986 that cue-induced cocaine craving increases progressively during early abstinence and remains high during extended periods of time. Clinical evidence now supports this hypothesis and that this increase is not specific to cocaine but rather generalize across several drugs of abuse. Investigators have identified an analogous incubation phenomenon in rodents, in which time-dependent increases in cue-induced drug seeking are observed after abstinence from intravenous drug or palatable food self-administration. Incubation of craving is susceptible to variation in magnitude a

Exacerbated Craving in the Presence of Stress and Drug Cues in Drug-Dependent Patients.

In addiction, risk factors for craving and use include stress and drug-related cues. Stress and cues have additive or more-than-additive effects on drug seeking in laboratory animals, but, surprisingly, seem to compete with one another (ie, exert less-than-additive effects) in human laboratory studies of craving. We sought heretofore elusive evidence that human drug users could show additive (or more-than-additive) effects of stress and cues on craving, using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Outpatients (N=182) maintained on daily buprenorphine or methadone provided self-reports of stres

Psychometric Properties of the German Translated Version and Adaptation of the Food Craving Inventory.

Dysfunctional eating behavior is a major risk factor for developing all sorts of eating disorders. Food craving is a concept that may help to understand better why and how these and other eating disorders become chronic conditions through non homeastatically-driven mechanisms. As obesity affects people worldwide, cultural differences must be acknowledged to apply proper therapeutic strategies. In this work, we adapted the Food Craving Inventory (FCI) to the German population. We performed a factor analysis of an adaptation of the original FCI in a sample of 326 men and women. We could replicat

Effects of fixed or self-titrated dosages of Sativex on cannabis withdrawal and cravings.

BACKGROUND: There is currently no pharmacological treatment approved for cannabis dependence. In this proof of concept study, we assessed the feasibility/effects of fixed and self-titrated dosages of Sativex (1:1, Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)/cannabidiol (CBD)) on craving and withdrawal from cannabis among nine community-recruited cannabis-dependent subjects. METHODS: Participants underwent an 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled trial (an ABACADAE design), with four smoke as usual conditions (SAU) (A) separated by four cannabis abstinence conditions (B-E), with administration of either

Association between a brief alcohol craving measure and drinking in the following week.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Craving for alcohol is thought to be a predictor of alcohol use, particularly in the near future. The assessment of craving in clinical practice requires brief, simple measures that can be implemented routinely. This study tested whether greater alcohol craving was associated with a higher likelihood of alcohol use in the subsequent week. DESIGN: The COMBINE Study (Combining Medications and Behavioral Interventions for Alcohol Dependence) was a large, multi-site clinical trial of treatment for alcohol dependence. Participants were randomized (stratified by site) to one of

A comparison of cognitive restructuring and cognitive defusion as strategies for resisting a craved food.

The present study investigated the effectiveness of two cognitive strategies for resisting a craved food. One-hundred-and-ten self-identified chocolate cravers were randomised to a waiting list control condition or to receive a 60-minute standardised group intervention on cognitive restructuring (CR) or cognitive defusion (CD). All participants were provided with a bag of chocolates which they were instructed to carry with them for seven days and try to resist eating; uneaten chocolates were returned at the end of the study period. Measures included chocolate consumption and other behavioural,

Craving as a predictor of treatment outcomes in heavy drinkers with comorbid depressed mood.

Alcohol and depression comorbidity is high and is associated with poorer outcomes following treatment. The ability to predict likely treatment response would be advantageous for treatment planning. Craving has been widely studied as a potential predictor, but has performed inconsistently. The effect of comorbid depression on craving's predictive performance however, has been largely neglected, despite demonstrated associations between negative affect and craving. The current study examined the performance of craving, measured pre-treatment using the Obsessive subscale of the Obsessive Compulsi

Out for a smoke: the impact of cigarette craving on zoning out during reading.

Cigarette craving has powerful effects on cognitive functioning, which may promote smoking behavior and relapse. One area of cognition that has had little impact on craving research is human consciousness. Developments in consciousness research using a mindless-reading paradigm permit examination of the effects of craving on both the occurrence and the awareness of mental lapses. Forty-four smokers, who were either nicotine deprived (crave condition) or nondeprived (low-crave condition), performed a mindless-reading task. This task assesses both self-caught and probe-caught mind-wandering epis

The effect of stress on craving for methadone depends on the timing of last methadone dose.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the extent to which the timing of last methadone dose moderates the influence of a laboratory stressor on craving for methadone in a sample of methadone maintenance patients. METHODS: Methadone maintenance patients (N=41) completed a computerized stress manipulation with two levels (low and high stress) on two separate days: (1) immediately following the administration of their standard daily methadone dose and (2) immediately prior to receiving their standard daily dose. The impact of stress, timing of methadone dose and their interaction were examined on self

Effects of hunger and visuo-spatial interference on imagery-induced food cravings.

The present study investigated the effects of hunger and visuo-spatial interference on imagery-induced food cravings. Forty-two women were randomly assigned to a hungry (no food for prior 4h) or not hungry condition. Participants were asked to form and maintain images of desired foods while looking at a blank computer screen (control condition) or performing a task designed to load the visuo-spatial sketchpad of working memory (dynamic visual noise). They then rated the vividness of their images and their craving intensity. Although hungry participants reported stronger food cravings, dynamic

Changes in craving for a cigarette and arterial nicotine plasma concentrations in abstinent smokers.

Although the relationship between nicotine and changes in heart rate and blood pressure has been demonstrated, the relationship between nicotine and subjective effects such as decreased craving, relaxation, sickness, and decreased nervousness, is less well delineated. In this study, arterial nicotine levels were drawn in 21 smokers who smoked two average nicotine (AN) cigarettes and one low nicotine (LN) cigarette. Craving for a cigarette, relaxation, sickness, and decreased nervousness were rated on a visual analog scale (VAS) before and after smoking each cigarette. None of these subjective

Daytime sleepiness and specific food cravings: The moderating role of insulin sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Daytime sleepiness is posited to stimulate hunger and food intake of specific macronutrients such that obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk may be elevated. To assess this hypothesis, this study of insulin sensitive and insulin resistant non‑diabetic individuals utilized standardized meal administration conditions to examine: 1) the extent to which self-reported sleepiness was associated with specific food cravings over the course of a day; and 2) whether insulin sensitivity interactively influenced this relationship. METHODS: Non-diabetic men and women (N = 143) participated in

The influence of glucose intake and psychosocial stress on food craving in healthy adults.

Stress has been linked to the consumption of palatable food and may contribute to the development of obesity. Interindividual differences in cortisol stress reactivity are discussed as mediating mechanisms, yet findings linking food craving to cortisol reactivity are heterogeneous. Methodological differences in whether participants receive a sugary preload or are invited fasted may contribute to these divergences. Hence, this study set out to systematically investigate the effect of glucose and psychosocial stress on food craving in healthy adults. Overall, 62 healthy, fasted adults (mean age
