Non-European migrants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders in Swiss forensic and general psychiatric care facilities - A comparative study using machine learning.

Personal history of migration poses an important risk factor for schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), which are also associated with a higher rate of criminal behavior. To enhance care for migrants, a vulnerable and often stigmatized group in both general and forensic psychiatry, this study investigates clinical, therapeutic, and psychopathological differences between non-European migrants diagnosed with SSD treated in forensic and general psychiatric settings. The aim is to identify factors that may influence pathways into the criminal justice system and pose challenges for the therapeutic

Psychopathy and impulsivity: The relationship of psychopathy to different aspects of UPPS-P impulsivity.

Impulsivity is thought to be a major component of psychopathy. However, impulsivity is a multi-faceted concept, and different facets may have differential relationships to psychopathy. We measured impulsivity via the UPPS-P in a sample of prisoners and in patients in a personality disorder service resident in secure psychiatric care. Psychopathy in the prison sample was measured via the clinician-rated Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version and in the patients via the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised. We found that the Lifestyle/Antisocial factor (Factor 2) was associated with acting rashly whe

The mediating role of self-esteem in the link between childhood adversities and criminality among North African adult males: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) significantly influence the physical and mental health of adults, and lead to poor behavioral outcomes such as criminal activities. However, the relationship between ACEs and criminal justice involvement is not fully understood, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region. OBJECTIVE: To explore this relationship in the Tunisian context while also examining the potential mediating role of self-esteem. METHOD: We conducted a case-control study comparing two groups of adult males in Tunisia: A case group of 403 inmates (April 2023) an

Treatment-relevant factors among adults receiving court-mandated substance use treatment: The role of emotion dysregulation.

Despite often being mandated to substance use treatment after release, many people on probation do not complete treatment. Several historical factors have been identified as relevant to substance use treatment in this population (i.e., past substance use, treatment history, and criminal history); however, less is known about the psychological characteristics, such as emotion dysregulation, that influence treatment-relevant factors among people in the criminal justice system. The present study used cross-sectional data to examine whether emotion dysregulation was associated with past-year subst

Negative outcomes in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder comorbid with oppositional defiant disorder.

OBJECTIVES: In children and adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the comorbidity of the oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) negatively affects the course of ADHD. The purpose of this study was to compare ADHD-diagnosed children with and without ODD comorbidity in terms of smoking, psychoactive substance use, disciplinary punishments at school, criminal behaviors, and unintentional injuries. METHODS: This study included 109 children diagnosed with ADHD alone and 79 children with the ADHD-ODD comorbidity from a child psychiatry outpatient clinic. The child

Risk factors for violent behavior among incarcerated male psychiatric patients: a multimethod approach.

A multimethod approach that included demographic, criminal offense, drug use, neuropsychological, Rorschach, psychiatric diagnosis, and psychopathy characteristics was used to evaluate 131 incarcerated male psychiatric inpatients. Each criminal offense was ranked from nonviolent to severely violent, and participants were classified as having lifetime histories of either high or low violent behavior. Univariate analyses revealed 12 characteristics which independently discriminated inmates with lifetime histories of high or low violent behavior (married, non-Caucasian race, Axis I psychotic diag

Network localization of antisocial behavior in neurological patients: Evidence and implications.

Antisocial behavior may develop in otherwise normal persons as a result of neurological diseases, including patients with focal brain lesions, frontotemporal dementia, and Parkinson Disease patients taking dopamine agonist medications. Evidence from these neurological patients demonstrates that antisocial behaviors relate to dysfunction in several different brain regions that form a specific brain network, rather than any single location alone. This network associated with acquired antisocial behavior is involved in social decision-making (measured using moral decision-making tasks) and value-

National variability in Americans' COVID-19 protective behaviors: Implications for vaccine roll-out.

Protective behaviors such as mask wearing and physical distancing are critical to slow the spread of COVID-19, even in the context of vaccine scale-up. Understanding the variation in self-reported COVID-19 protective behaviors is critical to developing public health messaging. The purpose of the study is to provide nationally representative estimates of five self-reported COVID-19 protective behaviors and correlates of such behaviors. In this cross-sectional survey study of US adults, surveys were administered via internet and telephone. Adults were surveyed from April 30-May 4, 2020, a time o

Criminal justice staff's professional quality of life and interactions with justice-involved individuals: The moderating role of stigma.

Criminal justice staff work in a challenging setting and yet are often expected to promote positive change in justice-involved individuals. This study examined the 1) types of supportive interactions criminal justice staff engage in with justice-involved individuals, 2) association between staff's professional quality of life (i.e., burnout, secondary traumatic stress, compassion satisfaction) and their endorsement of supportive interactions, and 3) the moderating impact of stigmatizing attitudes. Criminal justice staff across the U.S. (n=152) completed demographic questionnaires, the Professi

Examining the Impact of Permitless Firearm Legislation and COVID-19 on Crime and Arrests in Three Urban Cities.

While the number of state legislative changes to relaxed concealed firearm carrying laws continues to increase, research examining the impact of these laws on changes in criminal behavior, particularly in urban contexts, has not kept pace. To enhance our understanding of the potential impact of permitless carry legislative changes, we examined the temporal association between legislative changes and changes in illegal and dangerous behavior most likely to be associated with firearms violence and arrests in Lexington (KY), Oklahoma City (OK), and Tulsa (OK). We use statistical controls to accou

The Role of Stressful Life Events and Cultural Factors on Criminal Thinking among African American Women Involved in the Criminal Justice System.

African American women are positioned at the intersection of multiple disadvantaged statuses and disproportionately impacted by criminal justice policies, as evinced by their increased likelihood of incarceration. Yet, they continue to be overlooked in mainstream criminological research. Using data from 418 African American women in the B-WISE (Black Women in a Study of Epidemics) project, the current study investigates the relationship between several prominent stressors occurring in five social contexts and criminal thinking as a coping strategy. Findings indicate that criminal thinking may

Incapacity of the Mind Secondary to Medication Misuse as a Not Criminally Responsible Defense.

The manifestations of disorders of the mind may play a role in the occurrence of criminal behavior. In the majority of the cases, the presence of a psychiatric disorder is cited as the reason that an individual was not fully aware of his behavior. However, other conditions, such as seizure disorders or hypoglycemia, have also been linked to an inability to understand the nature and consequences of one's actions. On occasion, these situations can be explained by a state of automatism that may be described as insane or noninsane. In this article, we describe the case of a 77-year-old man, suffer

Correlates of early substance use and crime among adolescents entering outpatient substance abuse treatment.

Although many studies have examined the relationship between early deviant behavior and subsequent life problems among adolescents drawn from the general population, such relationships have not been examined for youth attending substance abuse treatment. Based on in-depth psychosocial assessments conducted with adolescents entering an outpatient substance abuse treatment program (N = 193), the current study examines individual characteristics, life circumstances, and other behavioral and psychological characteristics that are correlated with the age at which these youth initiated substance use

Characteristics of mentally retarded criminal offenders in Northern Taiwan.

The characteristics and criminal behavior in mentally retarded individuals remain largely unstudied. This retrospective study sought to establish a set of reference of criminal behavior characteristics in an ethnic Chinese mentally retarded group. Data were collected from forensic psychiatric evaluation of 32 mentally retarded offenders. Of the 32 offenders, only four (12.5%) cases were female. Mean age at the time of the offenses was 31. By IQ testing, 23 (71.9%) of the group fell into the mild mental retardation range, seven (21.9%) into the moderate mental retardation range, and two (6.2%)

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of community treatment orders on aggression or criminal behaviour in people with a mental illness.

AIMS: There has been concern about violent acts and other criminal behaviour by people with a possible history of mental health problems. We therefore assessed the effects of community treatment orders (CTOs) on self-, third-party-, and agency-reported criminal behaviour when compared to voluntary treatment. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed/Medline, Embase, PsycINFO and criminal justice bibliographic databases for observational or randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing CTO cases with controls receiving voluntary psychiatric treatment. Relevant outcomes were reports of violence an

How Should a Medical-Legal Partnership Address Unique Needs of People With Criminal Legal System Involvement?

Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) are well suited to address health-harming legal needs associated with the collateral consequences of mass incarceration in the United States, such as those that limit access to food, housing, employment, and family reunification postrelease. MLP innovations seek to expand the current model to address patients' criminal, as well as postrelease, civil legal needs by including community health workers and some patients as legal partners and creating coalitions to promote local and state policy change. Overall, this article explains how these MLP innovations can s

Personality dimensions and criminal arrest.

Previous studies have implicated antisocial personality disorder in criminal behavior, but little is known about the association between "normal" personality dimensions and arrest. We investigated the relationships between these personality dimensions and prior arrest in a sample of adults participating in a longitudinal epidemiological study. Between 1993 and 1999, psychiatrists re-examined subjects who were originally interviewed in Baltimore in 1981 as part of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area study; the psychiatrists diagnosed axis I and axis II disorders according to DSM-IV criteria.
