Comparison of slow-paced breathing interventions with and without an inhalation-hold on physiological outcomes: A randomized cross-over pilot study.

Slow-paced breathing (SPB) interventions have shown promise for modulating physiological regulation and enhancing cognitive performance. However, few studies have empirically examined how specific components of the breathing structure, particularly inhalation-holds during SPB, influence autonomic and endocrine responses. Thus, the present pilot study sought to address this gap by comparing the physiological and psychological outcomes of SPB with and without a 4-s post-inhalation breath hold using a within-subjects design. Participants (n = 32; 37% female) completed two SPB conditions in a rand

Effects oF compression legwear on knee biomechanics and inter-joint coordination during depth jumps: a randomized cross-over study.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of different types of compression legwear on knee biomechanics, and lower limb inter-joint coordination during depth jumps. Twelve healthy male participants were randomly assigned to wear compression shorts (CS), compression tights (CT), and sports shorts (control: CC). The participants perform depth jumps from a platform of 40 cm in height, thus landing on their dominant side (DS) and non-dominant side (NS). The lower limbs kinematics and kinetics are simultaneously recorded by using a motion capture system and force plates. During initial contact ph

Rationale and design of the vericiguat in vasospastic angina (ViVA) trial: A double-blind placebo-controlled randomized cross-over study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary vasospasm is highly prevalent in patients with angina and no obstructive coronary arteries (ANOCA). In the pathophysiology of coronary vasospasm, endothelial dysfunction and vascular smooth muscle cell hyperreactivity may cause an imbalance between vasodilation and vasoconstriction. Within this pathophysiology, nitric oxide is crucial. Nitric oxide activates soluble guanylate cyclase, which through the nitric oxide-soluble guanylate cyclase-cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway, reduces intracellular calcium levels in vascular smooth muscle cells, resulting in vasodilatio

Association of a Dietary Index for Gut Microbiota With Epilepsy Among US Adults Aged 40 and Over: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy remains difficult to control in some patients, motivating interest in modifiable factors linked to seizure biology. Because diet can shape gut microbial ecology and gut-brain signaling, we examined whether the dietary index for gut microbiota (DI-GM) was associated with prevalent epilepsy in US adults aged ≥ 40 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 5025 participants from NHANES 2013-2016. DI-GM was constructed from 14 predefined dietary components reflecting microbiota-supportive or microbiota-adverse intake. NHANES sampling weights were applied. Multivariab

Comparison of video laryngoscope with direct laryngoscope for endotracheal intubation by cardiology residents: A randomized cross-over manikin-based study.

Background Critically ill cardiac patients may decompensate suddenly owing to arrhythmias and worsening haemodynamics, often necessitating emergent endotracheal intubation. Training in airway management is usually neglected for residents in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU). There is an unmet need to train cardiology residents in the swift management of airways in the acute setting of a cardiac arrest. Methods In this manikin-based cross-over study, we compared King's vision channelled (KVC) and non-channelled video laryngoscopes (King's vision [KV]) with Macintosh direct laryngoscopes (DL

EVATRAN (The Effect of Eplerenone on the Evolution of Vasculopathy in Renal Transplant Patients): study protocol for a cross-over randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness is a major prognostic factor of cardiovascular (CV) morbi-mortality in kidney transplant (KT) patients. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that the vascular toxicity of calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) is mediated through the activation of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in vascular smooth muscle cells. Additionally, the role of MR in contributing to arterial stiffness is well documented in non-transplanted individuals. This study aims to investigate the impact of MR antagonist treatment on the progression of arterial stiffness in KT patients on cyclosporine.

Design of a randomized cross-over study evaluating effects of carbohydrate intake on glycemic control in persons with type 1 diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Diet is an important factor in managing glycemic control in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Reducing carbohydrate intake may be important for stabilizing blood glucose levels in certain groups of patients with T1D. There are few studies examining the effects of a low carbohydrate diet in patients with T1D. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of carbohydrate intake on glucose control in adults with T1D. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults with T1D (N = 54) and inadequate glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7.5%; 58 mmol/mol) were randomized in a cross-over design to a moderate carbohydrat

Influence of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Exercise on Physical Capacity and Gait in Multiple Sclerosis: A Cross-Over Pilot Study.

Physical capacity provides a link between disease or impairment and limitations in activity; in multiple sclerosis (MS), it is limited and decreased. The aim of this study was to study the effects of exercise and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex area in MS patients with fatigue and an impaired gait ability. A cross-over design was carried out on fifteen patients with two disability associations, but three were excluded. Before and after each intervention, the 6 min walk test (6MWT) and the 2 min walk test (2MWT) were used to assess walki

Transcranial magnetic stimulation as biomarker of excitability in drug development: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate pharmacodynamic effects of drugs targeting cortical excitability using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) in healthy subjects, to further develop TMS outcomes as biomarkers for proof-of-mechanism in early-phase clinical drug development. Antiepileptic drugs presumably modulate cortical excitability. Therefore, we studied effects of levetiracetam, valproic acid and lorazepam on cortical excitability in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 4-way cross-over study. METHODS:

Blinding in electric current stimulation in subacute neglect patients with current densities of 0.8 A/m2: a cross-over pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Neglect after stroke is a disabling disorder and its rehabilitation is a major challenge. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) seems to be a promising adjuvant technique to improve standard care neglect therapy. Since electric fields are influenced by age-related factors, higher current densities are probably needed for effective treatment in aged stroke patients. Validation of treatment efficacy requires sham-controlled experiments, but increased current densities might comprise blinding. Therefore, a pilot study was conducted to test sham adequacy when using current dens

Comparison of a metronome-guided prehospital medication infusion technique with standard calculation: a simulated randomized, controlled, cross-over study.

BACKGROUND: Limited research regarding administration of timed medication infusions in the prehospital environment has identified wide variability with accuracy, timing, and overall feasibility. This study was a quality improvement project that utilized a randomized, controlled, crossover study design to compare two different educational techniques for medication infusion administration. We hypothesized that the use of a metronome-based technique would decrease medication dosage errors and reduce time to administration for intravenous medication infusions. METHODS: Forty-two nationally regist

Activity limitations and participation restrictions in patients with peripheral facial palsy: a cross-sectional study over a six-year period.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial palsy is a pathological condition caused by a wide range of etiologies. A damage of VII cranial nerve produces facial disfigurement and limitations in daily life activities, such as drinking, eating and speaking. As a consequence, patients may experience psychological distress and social isolation. To counsel and design a patient-tailored rehabilitation for patients affected by peripheral facial palsy, physical and social limitations should be considered. Moreover, the knowledge of factors associated with disability plays a key role in the early identification and
