There is little information about the long-term outcome of infants with acquired severe subglottic stenosis (SGS) who require surgical intervention. We retrospectively identified infants with acquired subglottic stenosis who required anterior cricoid split (ACS) or tracheostomy for primary airway management; some of these children later required laryngotracheoplasty (LTP). All children were treated at our hospital from 1989-1997. During follow-up, we assessed patients for persistent symptoms (stridor at rest, exercise limitation, difficulty with respiratory tract infections, recurrent croup, a

BACKGROUND: Identification of children with respiratory viral infections may augment infection-control practices on inpatient units. There are clinical syndromes leading to morbidity among hospitalized children, however, in which a viral etiology of the illness might not be considered.
METHODS: Virus infection rates among 243 children aged <1 to 19 years hospitalized between October 1993 and April 1994 with asthma, pneumonia, bronchiolitis, fever, apnea, croup, or respiratory distress were evaluated as part of a University of Maryland Medical Center infection-control protocol. Anonymous data

Laryngotracheal stenosis should be suspected in children with recurrent, prolonged, or atypical croup; a history of endotracheal intubation; or a history of stridor, feeding difficulties, and failure to thrive. Tracheotomy-dependent patients with acquired laryngotracheal stenosis are candidates for surgical intervention to provide the child with the earliest opportunity to develop normal oral communication.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory conditions are a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. Corticosteroids are effective and established treatments in some acute respiratory infections (e.g. croup) and asthma exacerbations; however, their role is controversial in other conditions owing to inconsistent effectiveness or safety concerns (e.g. bronchiolitis, acute wheeze).
OBJECTIVES: To examine clinically relevant short-term safety outcomes related to acute single or recurrent systemic short-term (<2 weeks) corticosteroid use based on systematic reviews of acute respiratory conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Laryngotracheitis (croup) is a rare manifestation of COVID-19 in adults.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 52-year-old female presented to the emergency department (ED) with shortness of breath and inspiratory stridor.
CLINICAL FINDINGS AND INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination of the head and neck revealed a congested posterior pharyngeal wall. Laryngeal endoscopy with a 70-degree rigid endoscope demonstrated an edematous, bilaterally moving vocal cords. Ch

BACKGROUND: Human coronavirus-NL63 (HCoV-NL63) has been isolated from children with respiratory tract infections and its prevalence in Korea has not been reported.
OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate the presence and the clinical features of HCoV-NL63 during two winter seasons.
STUDY DESIGN: During April 2004-April 2006, nasopharyngeal specimens from children hospitalized with acute respiratory disease were tested for common respiratory viruses, including RSV, influenza A, influenza B, parainfluenza viruses, and adenovirus by IFA. hMPV infection was excluded by nested RT-PCR u

The relationship between certain host-related variables and the short-term outcome of hospitalization for severe acute lower respiratory infections was studied prospectively in a cohort of 103 pre-school Nigerian children. The respective mean ages of those with bronchiolitis and croup were 3.2 months and 18.9 months while the corresponding M:F ratios were 2.5:1 and 1:1. It was highly significant that all the eight children that died were malnourished (P less than 0.01). Furthermore, malnourished subjects with pleural effusion, in whom bacteraemia was common, stayed longest in hospital while su

The acute onset of stridor in a young child usually represents viral croup, particularly during the fall and early winter. If the clinical picture is entirely consistent with this diagnosis and gas exchange is maintained, management with cool mist at home is appropriate. Rapid deterioration is unusual in viral croup; however, if obstruction is prolonged or becomes unusually severe, racemic epinephrine aerosols, hospitalization for careful observation, a brief course of corticosteroid therapy, and, rarely, endotracheal intubation may be required. Many of the other causes of acute stridor in chi

An impacted foreign body in the subglottis is a rare cause of upper airway obstruction in children. More often than not the diagnosis is delayed; especially where proper history is not forthcoming. This peculiar condition can masquade as laryngotracheobronchitis or a croup. Though it is rare, a foreign body in the subglottis should be kept in mind in the investigation of a child with stridor.

In this article, the literature regarding the effects of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) on otolaryngologic disorders in infants and children is reviewed. We specifically focus on studies that suggest how GERD may be associated with sinusitis, cough, laryngitis, airway obstruction, apnea, recurrent croup, laryngomalacia, stridor, and subglottic stenosis in children.

From January 1986 to December 1987, 596 children less than 5 years of age with lower respiratory tract infection (LRI)--manifested as laryngitis, croup, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia--were studied for evidence of infection with respiratory tract viruses Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Of the 596 children in the study, 315 were ambulatory and 281 were hospitalized. Virologic studies included isolation and rapid diagnosis of virus from specimens of nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) and serologic studies of blood samples. Cultures of NPA for C. trachomatis were performed

Early diagnosis of acute epiglottitis may be difficult in the child presenting atypically. The cases of four patients who displayed atypical presentation are reported. The initial diagnosis in three children was croup and in one, pharyngitis. In the fourth patient, a child who had coexisting meningitis, epiglottitis was an incidental finding. All patients recovered with no sequelae.

Five common types of vascular anomalies have been reviewed. The entities should be kept in mind when a child has stridor, respiratory distress, recurrent croup, or pulmonary infections. Use of the plain radiography, barium esophagram, bronchoscopy, and angiography has been discussed in the diagnostic workup of vascular rings. Treatment of true encircling or compressive rings is surgical.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial and cardiac anomalies of Down syndrome (DS; trisomy 21) would seem to place these patients at higher risk of anesthesia-related complications (ARCs), but to date no comprehensive large-scale study has quantified this risk.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on all patients with DS undergoing anesthesia between April 1, 1988, and May 31, 1995, at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. In addition, the Anesthesiology Department Quality Assurance (QA) System database of concurrently collected anesthesia information on all patients undergoing anesthesia at th

The extensive literature has reported adverse effects on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) on children's health. We aim to analyze associations of ETS with dry night cough, croup, pneumonia, and frequent common cold and to disentangle the effects of prenatal, infancy and childhood exposure by multilevel logistic regression. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 41,176 children aged 3-8 years in 8 major cities of China during 2010-2011, and obtained demographic information, smoke exposure information, and respiratory outcomes. Parents' smoking habit and indoor tobacco smoke odor were cons

The objective of the present study was to determine whether vitamin A prevents pneumonia, diarrhoea and other infections in children with measles. A meta-analysis was carried out of randomized controlled trials identified through a systematic search of the medical literature for studies that used vitamin A to treat measles. A total of 492 children, aged from 6 months to 13 years, were supplemented with vitamin A, and 536 children were given placebo in six trials, five of which were conducted in hospitals and one in a community setting. The main outcome measures were: incidence of pneumonia, di
