Filtering of drinking water to remove the copepod intermediate hosts of Dracunculus medinensis is a primary strategy for control of guinea-worm disease. Since filters of different porosities are used, we tested the efficiency of synthetic-fibre filters of 100 microns and 200 microns pore size in removing the various stages of 3 species of copepods from water samples. The 200 microns mesh retained the larger copepodid stages including adults (C III-VI), but permitted passage of smaller copepodids and all naupliar stages. The toxicity of the insect toxin from the venom of the scorpion Androctonus australis Hector has been studied in six species of insects, three species of crustaceans (two terrestrial and one aquatic) and in mice. Paralysing and lethal effects were observed not only in insects but also on the three crustacean species. For insects the LD50 varies from 2 to 1310 ng per 100 mg of insect, according to the species. An anti-clotting substance active on the blood of host-fish has been isolated in the two cymothoids Anilocra physodes and Meinertia oestroides. Experiments carried out with different tissue extracts have shown that this activity occurs in the cephalon, more exactly in the laterooesophageal glands. The intestine or caecum extracts have non anti-clotting power but on the other hand, show a strong hemolytic action.

BACKGROUND: Sulfite is the oldest and most widely used additive in our food supply with antioxidant and preservative properties. Due to its allergenic-like reactions and other adverse health effects, its use is regulated by international regulatory bodies. Therefore, food industries as well as regulatory laboratories must ensure that the maximum concentration of sulfite permitted is not exceeded. The AOAC INTERNATIONAL-approved official method for the quantification of sulfites is the Optimized Monier-Williams Method (AOAC Official Method 990.28), which consists of a time-consuming titration.

Haff disease is a rare syndrome of unexplained myalgia and rhabdomyolysis occurring within 24 h of consumption of certain types of cooked freshwater fish or crustacean. It is caused by a yet unidentified heat-stable toxin. In the present review of published case studies and official press releases, the main objective is to report the emergence and epidemiology of Haff disease in China.
