Occurrence and evolutionary significance of a California encephalitis-like virus in Aedes squamiger (Diptera: Culicidae).

More than 12,000 Aedes increpitus Dyar and 4,600 Aedes squamiger (Coquillett) were tested for the presence of arboviruses to test the hypothesis that there is a coevolutionary relationship between Aedes (Ochlerotatus) mosquitoes and California serogroup viruses. Five strains of a California encephalitis-like virus were isolated from adults reared from larvae of Ae. squamiger collected in January 1989 from a coastal salt marsh at Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County, California. Viruses were isolated in Vero cell cultures and serotyped by cross-neutralization tests. These isolates represent the fi

Observations of the developmental stages of Coquillettidia perturbans (Diptera: Culicidae) with special reference to the pupal trumpets.

Coquillettidia perturbans (Walker) is a North American mosquito species of medical and veterinary importance that has been implicated as a vector of eastern equine encephalitis virus. Larval and pupal C. perturbans possess highly specialized respiratory appendages that enable them to respire from air vesicles in the hollow roots and shoots of emergent aquatic vegetation, which means that the larval and pupal stages have remained largely understudied. Field-collected C. perturbans larvae, pupae, and adults were studied under laboratory conditions in an attempt to establish a laboratory colony.

Updated checklist with new records and molecular data for the mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of Hong Kong.

An extensive mosquito survey was carried out in Hong Kong from September to October 2022, employing a variety of collection methods. Specimens were identified using a combination of morphology and mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 (COI) barcode sequences. Twenty-nine species, including three new records, i.e., Culex bicornutus (Theobald), Culex cinctellus Edwards, and Lutzia chiangmaiensis Somboon & Harbach, were collected. Phylogenetic analysis of COI sequences of Culex annulus Theobald and Culex vishnui Theobald collected in Hong Kong and elsewhere revealed that the sequences of t

Molecular Identification of Anopheles (Diptera: Culicidae) Species in Native Communities of a Northeastern Region of Peru.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a severe health problem in native communities of Condorcanqui in the Amazonas region of Peru. Recently, the number of malaria cases has increased considerably following a Plasmodium falciparum outbreak in 2019. However, there is no information on the anophelines acting as Plasmodium vectors in this area. This study aimed to identify Anopheles species circulating in previously unexplored native communities of Condorcanqui. Additionally, we sought to detect the presence of DNA from P. vivax and P. falciparum parasites in mosquitoes. METHODS: During three exploratory visit

The effects of Artificial Light at Night on the abundance of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Sunlight is one of the most important factors synchronizing the circadian clock of organisms. Natural cycles of light and dark have shaped the rhythms of biological functions throughout the evolutionary time. However, Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) in urban areas has increased significantly in recent decades, interfering with the predictability of the cycling environment and affecting the behavioral and physiological rhythms of organisms living in urban environments. As two urban species, the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are considered the primary and secondary vectors of seve

Feeding Preferences of Mosquitoes (Culicidae) from the Eastern Balkans and Their Role in Transmission of Avian Malaria.

Research on the feeding preference of mosquitoes and the malaria parasites they transmit to vertebrate hosts is crucial for understanding the host-vector-parasite relationships in this complex system. In order to contribute to the growing data on these associations, and focusing on avian malaria, we collected mosquitoes at regular intervals between April and October for 2 years (2017 and 2019) in a deciduous forest and reedbeds. Collected engorged mosquitoes were identified morphologically. Total DNA was extracted from the abdomen and head-thorax parts of the vectors and was used to identify b

Morphological Characterization of Culex Quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) Pupae in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Over the last 30 years, several mosquito-borne diseases have spread worldwide, threatening human and animal health, including lymphatic filariasis. Lymphatic filariasis is a major public health issue in tropical regions like Saudi Arabia, caused by parasitic worms. The parasitic worms Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi are transmitted by Culex quinquefasciatus. Cx. quinquefasciatus is a potential vector for various arboviruses like encephalitis virus and West Nile virus, along with protozoa like Plasmodium relictum that cause bird malaria. With the increasing number of mosquito species, th

Embryonic dormancy in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae): A survival and dispersal mechanism.

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main vectors of arboviruses such as dengue, Zika virus, and chikungunya. Ae. aegypti is a widely spread mosquito in tropical and subtropical regions, whereas Ae. albopictus is a culicid of Asian origin that shows exophilic behavior and can be found in subtropical and temperate areas. Climatic factors could influence the distribution of both species, making them use genetic and environmental resources to adapt to the environment, activating survival mechanisms (embryonic dormancy) that increase the developmental period and keep their offspring in the e

Establishment of a Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) Cell Line and its Permissiveness to Arbovirus Infection.

A cell line was established from Culex tarsalis Coquillett embryonated eggs and designated as CxTr. The cell line is heterogeneous, composed predominantly of small, round cells, and spindle-shaped cells with a doubling time of approximately 52-60 h. The identity of the cell line was verified as Cx. tarsalis by sequencing of cytochrome oxidase I and the cells were found to be free of contaminating cells, bacteria, fungi, and mycoplasma. The permissiveness of CxTr cells to arbovirus infection was investigated with vaccine and wildtype arboviruses from four viral families: Flaviviridae (Japanese

Evaluation of Methods for Collecting Mosquitoes (Culicidae: Diptera) in Canopy and Ground Strata in the Brazilian Savanna.

The hand-net is the standard method for capturing mosquitoes with sylvatic diurnal activity in disease outbreaks in Brazil. However, occupational risks and biases related to the collectors' abilities and attractiveness are important limitations. In this study, we compared hand-nets with automatic traps (CDC) associated to CO2 and BG-Lure® in the Vassununga State Park, a Brazilian Savanna protection area. The collections carried out over 27 days on the ground and the forest canopy. A total of 1555 mosquitoes were obtained in 20 taxa. The diversity index ranged between 1.12 and 1.79 and the domi

Categorization by Score of Mosquito Species (Diptera: Culicidae) Related to Yellow Fever Epizootics in Argentina.

The mosquito-borne yellow fever virus (YFV) is the cause of a zoonotic disease, with both sylvatic and urban cycles. Some mosquito species have been associated directly with transmission of the virus in South America, although the importance given to each species varies depending on the bibliography, geographical location, or year of publication. For Argentina, few publications have assessed the involvement of mosquito species, especially those included in the sylvatic cycle. Therefore, the goal of our paper was to gather all the information available in South America and categorize all mosqui

Ecological Characterization of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) at the Southern Coast of Mar Chiquita Lake, Argentina.

In the southern coast of Mar Chiquita Lake, central Argentina, mosquitoes affect public health and community livelihood, since they transmit pathogens to human beings causing diseases such as malaria, filariasis, encephalitis, yellow fever, and dengue, among others, and have a negative effect on cattle farming as well. To characterize the structure of the mosquito assemblage of the region, we determined the species composition and diversity, the temporal distribution of different species, and the patterns of species richness, abundance, and diversity across seasons. We collected adult mosquito

Transcriptome Analysis of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae Exposed With a Sublethal Dose of Haedoxan A.

Aedes albopictus is the vector of arbovirus diseases including yellow fever, dengue, Zika virus, and chikungunya fever, and it poses an enormous threat to human health worldwide. Previous studies have revealed that haedoxan A (HA), which is an insecticidal sesquilignan from Phryma leptostachya L., is a highly effective natural insecticide for managing mosquitoes and houseflies; however, the mechanisms underlying the response of Ae. albopictus after treatment with sublethal concentrations of HA is not clear. Here, high-throughput sequencing was used to analyze the gene expression changes in Ae.

Surveillance of a kdr Resistance Mutation in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) and Culex quinquefasciatus in California.

Culex pipiens Linnaeus and Culex quinquefasciatus Say are the primary vectors of West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis viruses in California. Pyrethrins and pyrethroids (synthetic pyrethrins) are the most widely used insecticides to control adult stage mosquitoes to prevent disease transmission. The most abundant and widespread mutation associated with pyrethroid resistance is the L1014F mutation of the voltage-sensitive sodium channel gene. Statewide, based on the testing of almost 2,000 mosquitoes from 14 counties, the resistant allele frequency was 71%. Although the L1014F mutation was found

The Arrival of the Northern House Mosquito Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula.

Culex pipiens L., the northern house mosquito, is the primary vector of West Nile virus to humans along the east coast of North America and thus the focus of much study. This species is an urban container-breeding mosquito whose close contact with humans and flexibility in host choice has led to its classification as a "bridge vector"; that is, it is thought to move zoonotic diseases to humans from vertebrate reservoirs. While this invasive species is now well documented in its established range, which expanded in 2001 to include Canada, the existence of populations of this species along the f

Behavioral Response of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae to Synthetic and Natural Attractants and Repellents.

Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the key vector of three important arboviral diseases: dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Immature stages of this species inhabit human-made containers placed in residential landscapes. In this study, we evaluated a few compounds in a sensitive behavioral assay with Ae. aegypti larvae. The orientation of larvae to different compounds was surveyed using a performance index (PI). The PI represents the response to each odorant, where a value of +1 is indicative of full attraction and -1 represents complete repulsion. The widely used insect repellent N
