PURPOSE: Herbs with "blood-activating" properties by traditional medicine theory often raise concerns for their possible anti-platelet or anticoagulation effects based on reports from in vitro studies. Such herbs have been implicated for bleeding manifestations based on only anecdotal reports. In particular, the combination of such herbs with anti-platelet agents is often empirically advised against despite lack of good clinical evidence. Here we studied 3 commonly used herbal preparations Curcuma longa, Angelica sinensis and Panax ginseng on their respective anti-platelet and anticoagulation

BACKGROUND: Abnormal tumor blood vessels can significantly promote the malignant progression of tumors, prompting researchers to focus on drugs that normalize these vessels for clinical treatment. The combination of the Qi-tonifying drug Astragali Radix and the blood-activating drug Curcumae Rhizoma, referred to as AC, exhibited significant anti-tumor metastasis effects. However, the association between the anti-tumor metastasis effect of AC and its potential role in regulating tumor vascular remodeling warrants further exploration.

As the use of herbal medications continues to increase in America, the potential interaction between herbal and prescription medications necessitates the discovery of their mechanisms of action. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of curcumin, a compound from turmeric (Curcuma longa), and its effects on the benzodiazepine site of the γ-aminobutyric acid receptor A (GABAA) receptor. Utilizing a prospective, between-subjects group design, 55 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 1 of the 5 intraperitoneally injected treatment groups

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains curcumin, demethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC). Nevertheless, curcumin is the most researched active ingredient for its numerous pharmacological effects. We investigated the impact of these curcuminoids found in Ryudai gold, an approved cultivar of Curcuma longa, on wound healing, inflammation, and diabetes. Sub-planter injections of carrageenan induced acute paw inflammation in rats. The wound-healing ability of 1% curcuminoids was examined by making a 6 mm round wound on the shaved dorsum of the mice with a biopsy punch. A single intraper

In livestock nutrition, natural feed additives are gaining increased attention as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters to improve animal performance. This study investigated the effects of dietary turmeric supplementation on the growth performance and gut health of weaned piglets. A total of 48 weaned piglets (Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire]) were used in a 6-week feeding trial. All piglets were allotted to two dietary treatments: corn-soybean meal basal diet without turmeric (control) and with 1% weight per weight (w/w) turmeric powder (turmeric). The results showed that dietary inclusi

OBJECTIVES: Histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT) is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the inactivation of histamine in central nervous system, kidneys and bronchi. Inhibition of HNMT is known to have a potential role in treating attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, memory impairment, mental illness and neurodegenerative illnesses. Therefore, to find potential compounds that could be developed as novel HNMT inhibitors, this study conducted an in silico study of the secondary metabolites of Nigella sativa L and Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb.
METHODS: In this study, we conducted a molecula

Curcuma longa L. is used as food supplement to prevent diseases, although limited studies have been performed on healthy subjects up to now. In the present work, an untargeted UPLC-MS metabolomics approach was applied to study the changes of 24-hours urinary composition on healthy volunteers due to a 28-days daily consumption of a dried C. longa extract containing a standardized amount of curcuminoids. Changes in the excretion of different metabolites were observed after supplementation. Curcumin and two metabolic derivatives (hexahydrocurcumin and dihydrocurcumin) were detected in urine, indi

Leaf extracts of C. vamana, endemic to Kerala state in India, were found to inhibit cell cycle progression in synchronous cultures of P. polycephalum in a concentration and phase-specific manner. Crude alkaloid extract (CAE) elicited maximum cell cycle delays in comparison to soxhletted chloroform, acetone and aqueous extracts. Total alkaloid content of CAE was found to be 64.9 mg/g. CAE showed lowest DPPH radical scavenging activity. Other extracts with higher free radical scavenging activity exhibited lesser cell cycle inhibiting potential. Upto 21% decrease in nuclear DNA was observed in CA

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a common, long-lasting skin condition characterized by inflammation that is frequently linked to the bacteria Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) and Staphylococcus spp. Conventional medicines face difficulties, such as bacterial resistance, in treating acne vulgaris, highlighting the need for new treatment approaches. In this study, we investigated the antibacterial activity of three medicinal plants, Garcinia mangostana (GM), Curcuma comosa (CC), and Acanthus ebracteatus (AE), which are traditionally used to treat different illnesses because of their antibacterial, antioxida

In recent years, the rapid increase in the resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics has produced major health issues. Novel applications for these compounds have been developed by integrating modern technologies such as nanotechnology and material science with the innate antibacterial activity of metals. The current study demonstrated the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from Momordica charantia and Curcuma zedoaria plant extracts, as well as their antibacterial properties. The synthesis of ZnO NPs was confirmed via UV-visible spectroscopy, showing clear peaks at 375 and 350

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: An herbal pair is a classic form of clinical dispensing in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), often used in prescriptions to enhance the effect or reduce potential side effects. It is the smallest component unit of Chinese medicine prescription and an essential bridge between Chinese medicine and prescription. Curcumae Rhizoma (called Ezhu in Chinese) is a representative TCM herb that promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis. It has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Ezhu is generally used in clinical applications as a part of a "d

Recent studies concerning products that originate from natural plants have sought to clarify active ingredients, which both explains the mechanisms of the function and aids in quality control during production. As a traditional functional plant, Curcumae Rhizoma (CR) has been proven to be effective in promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. However, the components that play a role in its huge compound library are still unclear. The present study aimed to develop a high-throughput screening method to identify thrombin inhibitors in CR and validate them by in vitro and in vivo exp

The combination of traditional Chinese medicines can improve the efficacy of cancer treatment. Furthermore, the combination of the traditional Chinese medicine curcuma zedoary and kelp was used to enhance the effect of the dissipation of blood stasis in pediatrics during the Song Dynasty. Curcumenol and laminarin, the main components of curcuma zedoary and kelp, are also reported to have a wide range of biological activities. Therefore, we hypothesize that the combination of curcuma zedoary and kelp may prevent the development of cancer. The aim of this research was to confirm whether a combin

Curcuma longa from Zingiberaceae belongs to the major spices consumed around the world, known from its cholagogue, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Lack of data on the activity of single components of turmeric extract encouraged the authors to apply TLC (thin-layer chromatography) based bioautography studies to reveal its antimicrobial constituents and construct a universal platform for the bioactivity assessment of crude extracts, with help of a freeware ImageJ software. This optimized chromatographic bioassay performed on diethyl ether and methanol extracts of Curcuma longa w
