Direct induced resistance in Oryza sativa to Spodoptera frugiperda.

Rice, Oryza sativa, is the most important staple food for a significant portion of the world's population. Despite the importance of rice, however, induced resistance to insects has not been thoroughly studied in rice; in fact, to our knowledge, direct induced resistance after injury by chewing insects has not been shown in rice. We conducted a series of experiments designed to characterize direct induced resistance in rice after feeding by larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith) and application of jasmonic acid. Weight gains and relative growth rates of fall armyworm l

Oxidative defence reactions in sunflower roots induced by methyl-jasmonate and methyl-salicylate and their relation with calcium signalling.

Ca(2+) plays a critical role as second messenger in the signal-response coupling of plant defence responses, and methyl-jasmonate and methyl-salicylate are important components of signal transduction cascades activating plant defences. When intact axenic non-induced seedling roots of sunflower were treated with different Ca(2+) concentrations up to 1 mM, there was no significant increase in O(2)(*-) generation or DMAB-MBTH peroxidase (extracellular, ECPOX) activities in the apoplast, probably because these roots had enough Ca(2+) in their exo- and endocellular reservoirs. Both activities were

Diastereoselective multicomponent cyclizations of Fischer carbene complexes, lithium enolates, and allylmagnesium bromide leading to highly substituted five- and six-membered carbocycles.

The one-pot sequential reaction of a chromium alkoxycarbene complex, a ketone or ester lithium enolate, and allylmagnesium bromide enabled the selective synthesis of novel diastereomerically pure pentasubstituted cyclopentanols or tetrasubstituted 1,4-cyclohexanediols, depending on the degree of substitution at the Cbeta position of the enolate anion. A few exceptions have been encountered in which tetrasubstituted cyclopentanols or pentasubstituted 1,4-cyclohexanediols were selectively formed. The use of 2-iodoethoxycarbene complexes gave access to 1,2,4-cyclohexanetriols. These multicomponen

Relationships between plant hormones, carbohydrate metabolism and excision-induced adventitious root formation of two contrasting hydrangea cultivars.

Cytokinins and abscisic acid act as auxin antagonists during adventitious root induction, thereby limiting AR development depending on plant genotype and the distance to the wounding site. This study investigated the role of plant hormones in the lower rooting capacity of cuttings of the Hydrangea macrophylla cultivar 'Clarissa' compared to 'Caipirinha', further considering interrelations to carbohydrates. At first, the rooting response to 1 min pulse treatments of the stem base with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was analyzed. Without IAA, rooting of 'Clarissa' lagged behind that of 'Caipirinha'.

NpSKP1-1A enhances Nicotiana plants resistance to black shank disease through the jasmonic acid biosynthesis pathway and is positively regulated by NpWRKY2.

Black shank disease, caused by Phytophthora parasitica var. Nicotianae (P. nicotianae), severely affects the quality and yield of Nicotiana plants. Although resistance genes from some wild Nicotiana plant species, such as Nicotiana plumbaginifolia, were transferred to cultivated Nicotiana plant long ago, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In previous work, NpSKP1-1A was found to interact with NpPP2-B10, which positively regulates Nicotiana plants resistance to P. nicotianae. In this study, we investigated the roles of NpSKP1-1A in resistance to P. nicotianae in Nicotiana plant

Grazing-induced cellular responses in toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries.

Blooms of Pseudo-nitzschia are frequent in coastal areas, and many species have been confirmed to synthesize the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). DA accumulates in filter-feeding marine organisms, posing a threat to human health. Grazing on Pseudo-nitzschia is considered a factor that affects the production of DA. There is a substantial body of literature focusing on the biotic and abiotic factors that influence DA accumulation, while the detailed molecular processes within the algal cells remain largely unexplored. Using co-culture of Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries and Artemia salina nauplii, we in

Preharvest Elicitors as a Tool to Enhance Bioactive Compounds and Quality of Both Peel and Pulp of Yellow Pitahaya (Selenicereus megalanthus Haw.) at Harvest and during Postharvest Storage.

Yellow pitahaya is a tropical fruit that has gained popularity in recent years. Natural elicitors are compounds that can stimulate the resistance and quality of fruits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of natural elicitors, methyl salicylate (MeSa), methyl jasmonate (JaMe), salicylic acid (SA) and oxalic acid (OA) at concentrations of 0.1 mM (MeSa and JaMe) and 5 mM (SA and OA), applied to the yellow pitahaya fruits under greenhouse conditions. After full blossom, four applications were made with a frequency of 15 days. At the time of harvest and after storage, the follo

A Jasmonic Acid-Related Mechanism Affects ARGONAUTE5 Expression and Antiviral Defense Against Potato Virus X in Arabidopsis thaliana.

During virus infection, Argonaute (AGO) proteins bind to Dicer-produced virus small interfering RNAs and target viral RNA based on sequence complementarity, thereby limiting virus proliferation. The Arabidopsis AGO2 protein is important for resistance to multiple viruses, including potato virus X (PVX). In addition, AGO5 is important in systemic defense against PVX. Normally AGO5 is expressed only in reproductive tissues, and its induction by virus infection is thought to be important for its participation in antiviral defense. However, it is unclear what mechanisms induce AGO5 expression in r

Relationship between GABA-Ergic System and the Expression of Mephedrone-Induced Reward in Rats-Behavioral, Chromatographic and In Vivo Imaging Study.

Mephedrone is a psychoactive drug that increases dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline levels in the central nervous system via interaction with transporters or monoamines. The aim of the presented study was to assess the role of the GABA-ergic system in the expression of mephedrone-induced reward. For this purpose, we conducted (a) a behavioral evaluation of the impact of baclofen (a GABAB receptors agonist) and GS39783 (a positive allosteric modulator of GABAB receptors) on the expression of mephedrone-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in rats, (b) an ex vivo chromatographic determi

Effect of jasmonic acid on the phytoremediation of dinitrophenol from wastewater by Solanum nigrum L. and Atriplex lentiformis (Torr.) S. Watson.

Phytoremediation is one of the best methods for cleaning up natural resources like water because plants are eco-friendly and safe for the ecosystem. Hyperaccumulators, e.g., Solanum nigrum L. and Atriplex lentiformis (Torr.) S. Watson, have been used to remove toxic metals from soil and water through phytoremediation techniques, but it is unknown if they can remove hazardous chemicals such as dinitrophenol (DNP), from wastewater. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to study the efficiency of S. nigrum and A. lentiformis in removing DNP from wastewater. Jasmonic acid (JAC) was applied to the

Lack of antagonism between salicylic acid and jasmonate signalling pathways in poplar.

Salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) often play distinct roles in plant defence against pathogens. Research from Arabidopsis thaliana has established that SA- and JA-mediated defences are more effective against biotrophs and necrotrophs, respectively. These two hormones often interact antagonistically in response to particular attackers, with the induction of one leading to suppression of the other. Here, we report a contrasting pattern in the woody perennial Populus: positive SA-JA interplay. Using genetically engineered high SA lines of black poplar and wild-type lines after exogenous

Pigmentation and Flavonoid Metabolite Diversity in Immature 'Fuji' Apple Fruits in Response to Lights and Methyl Jasmonate.

Artificial pigmentation of apple fruits has been intensely evaluated to generate less pigmented red apples, which are profitable because of the changes in fruit quality. In this study, we analyzed the diversity of flavonoids and the patterns of flavonoid metabolic gene expression under light irradiation with or without methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment in immature (S1) and color-turning (S2) staged 'Fuji' apples. Further, we assessed the metabolic regulation at the gene level between anthocyanin and flavonol in light-responsive apple skins. UV-B exposure within 3 days was found to significantl

Characterization of infected process and primary mechanism in rice Acuce defense against rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae.

Identification of infection process and defense response during M. oryzae infecting Acuce. Magnaporthe oryzae is a destructive rice pathogen. Recent studies have focused on the initial infectious stage, with a few studies conducted to elucidate the characteristics of the late infectious stages. This study aims to decipher the characteristics at different stages (biotrophic, biotrophy-necrotrophy switch (BNS), and necrotrophic) between the interaction of two M. oryzae-rice combinations and investigate the resistance mechanisms of rice to M. oryzae using cytological and molecular methods. The bi

Hydrogen sulfide acts downstream of jasmonic acid to inhibit stomatal development in Arabidopsis.

Main conclusion: Jasmonic acid (JA) negatively regulates stomatal development by promoting LCD expression and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) biosynthesis. H2S inhibits the initiation of stomata formation and acts upstream of SPEECHLESS. Abstract: Stomatal development is strictly regulated by endogenous signals and environmental cues. We recently revealed that jasmonic acid (JA) negatively regulates stomatal development in Arabidopsis thaliana cotyledons (Han et al., Plant Physiol 176:2871-2885, 2018), but the underlying molecular mechanism remains largely unknown. Here, we uncovered a role for H2S in

High day and night temperatures distinctively disrupt fatty acid and jasmonic acid metabolism, inducing male sterility in cotton.

High temperature stress is an inevitable environmental factor in certain geographical regions. To study the effect of day and night high temperature stress on male reproduction, the heat-sensitive cotton line H05 was subjected to high temperature stress. High day/normal night (HN) and normal day/high night (NH) temperature treatments were compared with normal day/normal night (NN) temperature as a control. At the anther dehiscence stage, significant differences were observed, with a reduction in flower size and filament length, and sterility in pollen, seen in NH more than in HN. A total of 36

Effect of jasmonic acid on major terpenes and density of glandular trichomes in Lippia graveolens kunth (Verbenaceae).

The effect of exogenous application of jasmonic acid (JA) on the concentration of main terpenes and density of glandular trichomes was investigated in the Mexican oregano, propagated from seeds from 3 localities. JA 1 mM was applied locally and to the whole plant. JA locally applied increased the number of trichomes, with a mean of 20 trichomes more with respect to the controls in plants from Tecomavaca and Zapotitlán Salinas, and significantly increased the thymol concentration by 185% systemically and 255% locally, compared to the control. JA applied to the whole plant decreased the number o

Bisphosphine catalyzed sequential [3 + 2] cycloaddition and Michael addition of ynones with benzylidenepyrazolones via dual α',α'-C(sp3)-H bifunctionalization to construct cyclopentanone-fused spiro-pyrazolones.

A bisphosphine-catalyzed sequential [3 + 2] cycloaddition and Michael addition reaction of ynones with benzylidenepyrazolones has been developed. Under the catalysis of DPPB [1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane], the reaction proceeded smoothly to give spiro-[cyclopentanone] pyrazolone derivatives in moderate to good yields with good diastereoselectivities via sequential dual α',α'-C(sp3)-H bifunctionalization annulation. This strategy provides a novel route toward the synthesis of spiro-[cyclopentanone] pyrazolones containing three contiguous stereocenters which possess potential pharmaceutical

Plant defences limit herbivore population growth by changing predator-prey interactions.

Plant quality and predators are important factors affecting herbivore population growth, but how they interact to regulate herbivore populations is not well understood. We manipulated jasmonate-induced plant resistance, exposure to the natural predator community and herbivore density to test how these factors jointly and independently affect herbivore population growth. On low-resistance plants, the predator community was diverse and abundant, promoting high predator consumption rates. On high-resistance plants, the predator community was less diverse and abundant, resulting in low predator co

Broccoli and turnip plants display contrasting responses to belowground induction by Delia radicum infestation and phytohormone applications.

Induced responses to insect herbivory are a common phenomenon in the plant kingdom. So far, induced responses have mostly investigated in aerial plant parts. Recently it was found that root herbivore may also elicit both local and systemic responses affecting aboveground herbivores and their natural enemies. Using broccoli (Brassica oleracea subsp. italica L.) and turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa L.), two cultivated brassicaceaous plants differing in their chemistry and morphology, we analysed the local and systemic induced responses triggered by Delia radicum L. damage, JA and SA application

Are formal oxidation states above one viable in cyclopentadienylcopper cyanides?

Recent experiments have led to the discovery of the thermally unstable organocopper compounds (η(3)-C(3)H(5))CuMe(2), [(η(3)-C(3)H(5))CuMe(3)](-), and CuMe (4)(-) in which the copper atom is in the +3 formal oxidation state. In a quest for more stable organocopper compounds with copper in formal oxidation states above one, the binuclear cyclopentadienylcopper cyanides Cp(2)Cu(2)(CN)(n) (Cp = η(5)-C(5)H(5); n = 1, 2, 3) have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The lowest energy structures are found to have terminal Cp rings and bridging cyanide ligands up to a maximum of two bri
