How common is intestinal parasitism in HIV-infected patients in Malaysia?

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals have greater susceptibility to infections by a myriad of microorganisms which can cause significant morbidity and mortality compared to immunocompetent individuals. Of these microbial infections, intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) however are receiving less attention than bacterial and viral infections, hence, the lack of information of parasitic infections in HIV individuals. Prevalence of IPIs among 346 HIV-infected individuals in Malaysia was determined in this study. The overall prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs)

Current research trends towards the control of protozoans in foods.

Protozoan parasites such as Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Toxoplasma gondii and Cyclospora cayetanensis remain difficult-to-control hazards in food due to environmental persistence, low infectious doses, and the interpretability gap between nucleic acid detection and infectivity. This review synthesizes 4-year research trends shaping protozoan control in food systems, focusing on three critical pillars: matrix-adapted front-end processing (concentration, lysis, inhibitor management); inhibitor-resilient quantification; and sequencing-based attribution for outbreak investigation and

Multicenter evaluation of the new QIAstat Gastrointestinal Panel for the rapid syndromic testing of acute gastroenteritis.

In acute gastroenteritis (AGE), identification of the infectious agent is important for patient management. Since symptoms do not reliably identify the agent, microbiological diagnostics are important. Conventional methods lack sensitivity and often take days. Multiplex PCR panels offer fast and sensitive alternatives. Our aim was to assess the performance of the new QIAstat Gastrointestinal Panel (GIP) detecting 24 different gastroenteric pathogens from stool in Cary-Blair transport medium (Adenovirus F 40/41, Astrovirus, Norovirus GI/GII, Rotavirus A, Sapovirus, Campylobacter spp., Clostridi

The Rinconada Lake System (RLS) as a Potential Reservoir of Protozoan Parasites in Camarines Sur, Philippines.

Protozoan and helminthic parasitism remain significant health and economic burdens, particularly in developing countries such as the Philippines. This study evaluated the Rinconada Lake System (RLS) in Camarines Sur, comprising Lakes Buhi, Bato, and Baao, as a potential reservoir for medically important parasites. Microscopic examination of surface water samples from 20 stations revealed no helminthic ova, which may have settled in sediments, but detected potential coccidian oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. (55%, 11/20) and Cyclospora sp. (40%, 8/20). Culture-based detection of free-living amoe

INTRODUCTION: Microsporidia are intracellular micro-organisms, characterized by mature spores with chitin walls and by one extrusive polar tube through which they pour their sporoplasm to the host cells. In immunocompromised patients, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis produce diarrhea and systemic dissemination. In Mexico there is not information about microsporidia in children with cancer. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the presence of microsporidia species in pediatric patients with leukemia or lymphoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We obtained fe

The epidemiology of intestinal protozoa in the Israeli population based on molecular stool test: a nationwide study.

UNLABELLED: Stool examination using microscopy was the traditional method for the diagnosis of intestinal parasites. Recently, the use of molecular tests to identify stool protozoa has become the main tool used in most clinical laboratories in Israel. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of intestinal parasites in Israel and to compare this prevalence in laboratories that use molecular tests vs a laboratory that uses microscopy. Samples collected from January to October 2021 at seven laboratories were analyzed by real-time PCR (RT-PCR) or by microscopy. The multiplex panel included the

Strongyloides Stercoralis Infection Among Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-Infected Patients in the United States of America: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND Strongyloides stercoralis infection is endemic in subtropical and tropical regions but is reported rather sporadically in temperate countries. In the USA, the highest rates of infection are from the southeastern states, predominantly among immigrants. There is paucity of case reports on S. stercoralis infection among HIV-infected patients who were born and raised in the USA. CASE REPORT A 61-year-old male with known HIV infection (CD4 count: 235 cells/uL, undetectable HIV RNA, on antiretroviral therapy) presented with a 3-month history of diarrhea. He was initially diagnosed to have

Diarrhoeal pathogens in the stools of children living with HIV in Ibadan, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Diarrhoea can be debilitating in young children. Few aetiological investigations in Africans living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have been performed since antiretrovirals became widely available. METHODS: Stool specimens from children with diarrhoea living with HIV, and HIV-uninfected controls, recruited at two hospitals in Ibadan, Nigeria, were screened for parasites and occult blood, and cultured for bacteria. Following biochemical identification of at least five colonies per specimen, diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli and Salmonella were confirmed by PCR. Data were l

Prevalence of Opportunistic Intestinal Parasites and Associated Factors among HIV Patients while Receiving ART at Arba Minch Hospital in Southern Ethiopia: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic Intestinal Parasites (OIPs) commonly cause morbidity in HIV/AIDS patients due to the decline of CD4+T-cells. The burden of Opportunistic Intestinal Parasitic Infections (OIPIs) in Ethiopia is expected to be high due to poor sanitation and co-pandemicity of HIV/AIDs. Therefore, frequent assessment of the magnitude and associated factors for intestinal parasitosis is essential for the management of HIV/AIDS patients. METHODS: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending Arba Minch Hospital Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Clinic from March

Should we treat Blastocystis sp.? A double-blind placebo-controlled randomized pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis sp. is a worldwide-distributed protist colonizing the guts of humans and a great variety of animals. It is unclear whether it is just a commensal or an infectious parasite that prompts eradication. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of metronidazole in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms harbouring only Blastocystis sp. In addition, we explored whether Blastocystis subtype or concomitant parasitic infection detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) may influence treatment outcome. METHODS: We included adults with persistent gastrointe

Reactive Arthritis Update: Spotlight on New and Rare Infectious Agents Implicated as Pathogens.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article presents a comprehensive narrative review of reactive arthritis (ReA) with focus on articles published between 2018 and 2020. We discuss the entire spectrum of microbial agents known to be the main causative agents of ReA, those reported to be rare infective agents, and those reported to be new candidates causing the disease. The discussion is set within the context of changing disease terminology, definition, and classification over time. Further, we include reports that present at least a hint of effective antimicrobial therapy for ReA as documented in case re

Profiling pathogenic protozoan and their functional pathways in wastewater using 18S rRNA and shotgun metagenomics.

Despite extensive research, little is known about the composition of eukaryotic protists in environmental samples. This is due to low parasite concentrations, the complexity of parasite diversity, and a lack of suitable reference databases and standardized protocols. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study used 18S rRNA short amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing approaches to profile protozoan microbial communities as well as their functional pathways in treated and untreated wastewater samples collected from different regions of South Africa. Results demonstrated that protozoan divers
