Ruptured intracranial dermoid cysts.

Rupture of intracranial dermoid cysts (RICDC) is a rare phenomenon. The mechanism of rupture, pathophysiology of fat in the ventricles and subarachnoid spaces, possible complications, and proper management of such conditions are proposed on the basis of a review of the literature and experience with two cases of ruptured intracranial dermoid cysts (One was in the pineal region, while another was in the fourth ventricle). It is concluded that rupture of intracranial dermoid cysts is usually spontaneous and non-fatal. Persistence of fat in the subarachnoid spaces postoperatively may last asympto

[Diagnosis of renal cysts].

Evaluation and management of renal cysts Renal cystic diseases are a heterogeneous group of conditions including heritable, developmental, and acquired disorders. They are united by the presence of microscopic or giant fluid-filled cavities and affect both children and adults. The definitive diagnosis of many of the renal cystic diseases requires clinical, radiological, pathological, and genetic analysis. A precise diagnosis is essential for prognosis, treatment, and future genetic counselling.

Ruptured intracranial dermoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Intracranial dermoid cysts are rare congenital neoplasms that are believed to arise from ectopic cell rests incorporated in the closing neural tube. The rupture of an intracranial dermoid cyst is a relatively rare event that typically occurs spontaneously. In the past it was believed that rupture is always fatal, a hypothesis that is not supported by more recently reported cases. The symptoms associated with rupture vary from no symptoms to sudden death. METHODS: The present paper analyzes published cases of ruptured intracranial dermoid cysts in terms of their age profile and the

Choledochal cysts in adults.

HYPOTHESIS: Choledochal cyst is rarely diagnosed in adulthood. When complicated by biliary tract malignancy, the disease has a distinct presentation and carries a dismal prognosis despite radical surgical resection. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: A retrospective study was performed on 30 adult patients who presented with choledochal cyst from January 1, 1989, to December 31, 2000. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The clinical presentation, management, and outcome of patients with and without biliary tract malignancy. RESULTS: Nine patients (30%) had biliar

Non-neoplastic mediastinal cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The non-neoplastic mediastinal cysts (NNMCs) form a group of uncommon benign lesions of a congenital origin. The significant controversy regarding these cysts is whether to manage with observation or surgical resection. The aim of this study is to analyse the utility of thoracic computed axial tomography (CT) in imaging diagnosis of the NNMCs and the results of surgery in these lesions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty NNMCs underwent surgery between 1980 and 2000. The preoperative study of mediastinal cystic masses includes a complete blood test, chest radiography (CR) and, for the la

Treatment of myxoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Distal digital keratoacanthoma (DKA) is an uncommon tumor difficult to diagnose clinically, and even histologically, with certainty. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose is to report on two new cases and to discuss the clinical, histologic, and differential diagnosis. METHODS: We have reviewed all well documented cases published in the literature. RESULTS: No single diagnostic criterion is sufficiently sensitive and specific to be pathognomonic. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of DKA should be based on the correlation of clinical, radiological and pathologic findings, but the tumor is frequently d

[Ovarian cysts and pregnancy].

UNLABELLED: FREQUENCY AND HISTOLOGY: In the first trimester of pregnancy, ovarian cysts are often functional without complications. After 16 weeks of gestation, frequency of ovarian cyst is reported between 0.5 and 3.0%. Histological results are identical to those observed in non pregnant women between 15 and 44 years, essentially dermoid cysts and functional cysts. Frequency of ovarian cancer is reported between 1 out of 15,000 and 1 out of 32,000 pregnancies. A surgical intervention is necessary if suspect signs are observed at ultrasonographic examination. RISK OF COMPLICATIONS: Almost all

Atypically located pericardial cysts.

Pericardial cysts are generally recognized when they present in a cardiophrenic angle, but may not be suspected when they occur elsewhere in the thorax. To highlight the unusual localisations of pericardial cysts, we represent two patients with cysts of which one was adjacent to the left pulmonary hilum and the other was located in the subpulmonary region. The clinicians should take into consideration this entity in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the mediastinum.

OBJECTIVE: In this clinical retrospective study, we aimed to evaluate giant hydatid lung cyst cases as a different clinical entity that recorded in last 10 years in our clinic. METHODS: Between February 1990 and May 2000, a total of 305 hydatid lung cyst cases from patients that had been operated were reviewed, and 67 (21.9%) cysts with more than 10 cm in diameters of them were regarded as a giant hydatid lung cyst. Further investigations were made with respect to different factors. RESULTS: Thirty-six (54%) cases were male and 31 (46%) were female. The ages ranged between 5 and 54 (mean 21.

[Choledochal cysts: surgical treatment].

The excision of the choledochal cyst with bile drainage through intestinal conduit is a standard operative procedure in the surgical management of choledochal cysts. During the last eight years five patients have been treated with this operation at the University Children's Hospital in Zagreb. All the patients were girls aged from two months to twelve years. The classical triad of pain, jaundice and abdominal mass was observed in only one patient, an eight-year-old girl. The only symptom in infancy was jaundice. Diagnosis was made by abdominal ultrasound, bibliography, CT scan with hepatotropi

Juxtaphyseal aneurysmal bone cysts.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign primary or secondary lesions that commonly arise in long bones and often before skeletal maturity. Little has been written about aneurysmal bone cysts that abut the physeal plate. The records of 15 patients with juxtaphyseal aneurysmal bone cysts were reviewed. Fourteen of the patients were referred with abnormal radiographs after evaluation for pain in the affected limb. One patient presented with abnormal radiographs after fracture about the aneurysmal bone cyst. None of the patients had evidence of growth plate disruption. The children's ages ranged from 2 t

[Eruptive vellus hair cysts].

Eruptive vellus hair cysts are rare epidermal cysts with vellus hairs, which appear in children or young adults. A 21-year-old patient is reported who developed asymptomatic comedo-like papules on his face, neck and chest. Histopathologically, epidermoid cysts with a fine stratum granulosum, laminated keratinous material and numerous vellus hairs were found in the mid-dermis. Evaluation of immediate family members revealed that the patient's father was similarly affected. Eruptive vellus hair cysts and steatocystoma multiplex are clinically similar, but have distinctive histopathological featu

Craniocervical intradural neurenteric cysts.

Neurenteric cysts are rare lesions of the central nervous system that are lined by epithelium of intestinal nature. They result from abnormal separation of germ cell layers in the 3rd week of embryonic life, leading to persistence of entodermal elements in the spinal canal. The common location is cervical and ventral to the spinal cord. The lesions have been recognized as being entodermal in origin by such markers as vertebral anomalies, gut cysts, bowel reduplication and the presence of keratin markers. Three unusual cases of childhood craniocervical intradural neurenteric cysts in patients a

Mesenteric cysts in children.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cysts are uncommon benign abdominal masses. Approximately one third of patients with these lesions are children. METHODS: We reviewed our clinical records for the past 14 years (corresponding to the period of time in which ultrasonography and computed tomography became reliable methods for imaging pediatric patients) and found 10 patients with mesenteric cysts. RESULTS: We were surprised to discover that abdominal pain was a presenting complaint in all but one patient. Five of the patients had the findings of an acute surgical abdomen and were thought to have appendici

[Congenital atrichia with cysts].

INTRODUCTION: Congenital atrichia with papular lesions is a rare congenital ectodermic dysplasia. CASE REPORT: A male child had atrichia of the scalp and eyebrows from birth. The atrichia was associated with epidermic cystic lesions of the scalp. Biopsy showed cystic piler follicles within the derma surrounded with an inflammatory infiltration of multinucleated giant cells. DISCUSSION: In most reported cases, scalp hair is present at birth and then falls within the first three months of life. Follicular cysts appear later. This syndrome generally occurs sporadically and the mode of inheritan

Parasellar epidural hydatid cysts.

We report two rare cases of parasellar epidural hydatid cysts. Among the 64 patients with intracranial hydatid cysts we have treated in the past 20 years, only these two cases were located epidurally. Because the location and the computed tomographic characteristics were so different from the other cysts, the preoperative diagnosis was difficult to make. We were unable to remove the cysts without rupturing them because they were tightly surrounded. Both patients underwent surgery twice because of a recurrence. The treatment of this kind of case requires further discussion.
