Two hundred fifty-six children with previously untreated acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) were evaluated on a Pediatric Oncology Group (POG) phase III randomized trial of both induction and continuation chemotherapies. Induction therapy compared vincristine, cytarabine, and dexamethasone (VADx) with daunorubicin, cytarabine, and thioguanine (DAT). We have performed gene rearrangement studies on the leukemic blasts of a patient with acute pre-B-cell leukemia. The patient had a 5 year history of follicular lymphoma, which developed into acute pre-B-cell leukemia. The leukemic blasts revealed a karyotype with two translocations, t(8; 14) and t(14; 18), characteristic for Burkitt's lymphoma and follicular lymphoma. Expression of CD99 is higher on immature than on mature T cells. We postulated that this marker could be used to assess minimal residual disease (MRD) in T-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Lymphoblastic lymphoma is an uncommon malignancy, with most cases showing a T-cell phenotype and presenting as a mediastinal mass. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features, immunohistochemical findings and prognosis of precursor lymphoblastic lymphoma/acute lymphoblastic leukemia (LBL/ALL).
METHODS: One hundred and fifty-three cases of LBL/ALL were retrospectively analyzed. Immunohistochemical study was carried out.
