Impact of benzene-ethanol extractives on deep eutectic solvent-mediated lignin extraction from poplar and eucalyptus.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES), an emerging class of green solvents, have demonstrated remarkable efficiency in the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass. Benzene-ethanol extractives in woody biomass significantly affect the efficiency of DES-mediated fractionation. Therefore, investigating influence of benzene-ethanol extractives on DES-mediated pre-treatment is essential for optimizing of poplar and eucalyptus fractionation. Removing benzene-ethanol extractives significantly increased the polar component of the surface free energy (SFE) in both poplar and eucalyptus biomass. This prominentl

Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Synthesis of a Deep Eutectic Solvent Based on Protonated Caffeine, Ethylene Glycol, and ZnCl2.

In this study, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) incorporating protonated caffeine (CafCl), ethylene glycol (EG), and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) was synthesized and characterized for the first time. Caffeine was protonated using an optimized procedure in an anhydrous medium to enhance its interaction with the system, and its structure was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy, NMR, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), evidencing the formation of the N-H bond in the imidazole ring. A eutectic mixture with a molar ratio of ETG:ZnCl2:CafCl of 1:2:0.1 was synthesized, and its characterization confirmed the forma

Selective and complementary antimicrobial and antiviral activity of silver, copper, and selenium nanoparticle suspensions in deep eutectic solvent.

Metallic and nonmetallic nanoparticles are bioactive compounds that exhibit broad resistance to bacteria, fungi, and even viruses. In this paper, a deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on betaine, glucose, and ethylene glycol was used to obtain suspensions of silver, copper, and selenium nanoparticles. Depending on the nanoparticle precursor used, Ag, Cu, and Se nanoparticles (NPs) with an average particle size of 50-100 nm were prepared, and the properties of the products were confirmed by the STEM, XPS, DLS, and UV-VIS methods. The use of a DES, without the need for additional reactants, allowe

A Natural deep eutectic solvent as an effective material for dual debridement and antibiofilm effects in chronic wound treatment.

In chronic wound treatment, the debridement of devitalized tissue and the eradication of the biofilm must balance aggressiveness with care to protect regenerating tissues. In this study, urea, a potent chaotropic molecule, was modulated through the formation of a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES) with betaine to develop a new debriding material (BU) suitable for application into injured dermal tissues. To evaluate BU's debriding capacity, along with its antibiofilm effect and biocompatibility, pre-clinical to clinical methods were employed. In vitro determinations using artificial and clin

Sequential separation of critical metals from lithium-ion batteries based on deep eutectic solvent and electrodeposition.

The rise and development of electric vehicles have brought much attention to the recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the recovery of critical metals from LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) is a challenge, especially for the nickel and cobalt, which have similar chemical properties. Here, a novel ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and tartaric acid was proposed. Our protocol of DES synthesis, nickel separation, and leaching of cobalt and manganese were integrated into one step, which significantly simplified the recovery process. The crystall

Effective extraction of fluorescent brightener 52 from foods by in situ formation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent.

Fluorescent brightener 52 (FWA52) is a coumarin-based compound, and it is difficult to degrade owing to its high chemical stability. Up to now, several methods have been developed to extract and determine FWAs, but toxic, volatile and harmful organic solvents are often used. In this paper, a novel method for the extraction and analysis of FWA52 is proposed for the first time by in situ formation of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) with parabens in aqueous solution. The effects of paraben structure, solution pH, system temperature, extractant dosage and initial FWA52 concentration on the

Green extraction of chitin from Litopenaeus vannamei shell waste using deep eutectic solvents coupled with ultrasound-generated bulk nanobubbles.

A novel green strategy for chitin extraction from Litopenaeus vannamei shell waste was developed using choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) coupled with nanobubbles. Initially, three DES systems, including ChCl-citric acid (ChCl-CA), ChCl-lactic acid (ChCl-LA), and ChCl-glycerol (ChCl-Gly), were evaluated for chitin extraction performance. Among them, ChCl-Gly exhibited the highest extraction yield (39.85%), significantly outperforming ChCl-CA (26.53%), ChCl-LA (28.45%), and the conventional chemical method (17.91%) (P < 0.05). Therefore, ChCl-Gly was selected for furthe

Efficient and selective capture of sulfur dioxide by graphitic phase carbon nitride equipped with BmimCl-type deep eutectic solvents.

Deep eutectic solvents(DESs) are adsorbents for SO2 capture. Their industrial application remains constrained by the high viscosity of the SO2-loaded liquid and associated transport difficulties. To address this limitation, DESs (BmimCl:Im) were immobilized onto graphitic carbon nitride(g-C3N4) with a well-developed pore structure. Composite materials with different loading ratios were prepared by physical impregnation, and their SO2 capture performance was systematically evaluated. g-C3N4 is composed of stacked nanosheets that form flexible nanoporous channels, providing high loading capacity,

Cyclodextrin-based supramolecular deep eutectic solvents modulate curcumin stabilization and the structure-property relationships of potato starch-PVA films.

Potato starch (PS) films require plasticization, but traditional plasticizers often increase hygroscopicity and water sensitivity. Curcumin, due to its poor solubility and instability, is difficult to incorporate into hydrophilic matrices. Here, curcumin-loaded supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRADES) based on citric acid and α-, β-, or γ-cyclodextrin were introduced into PS-PVA films as an integrated solubilizing, plasticizing, and functional phase. SUPRADES increased the solubility of curcumin from 0.003 to 4.17 mg/mL, and β-SUP provided the strongest protection against light-induced

Co(II) Recovery from Hydrochloric Acid Solution Using Menthol-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs): Application to NMC Battery Recycling.

Lithium-ion batteries are essential to ensure electric mobility and reduce CO2 emissions from transportation. One of the most commonly used chemistries is nickel-cobalt-manganese (NMC) batteries, which also have applications beyond the automotive sector. The recycling of these batteries requires the development of technologies to enable the selective separation and recovery of the metals present in the battery. One of these selective technologies involves the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs). This research study investigates the different parameters that influence the recovery of Co(II) fr

Cellulose microfiber production from green seaweed Ulva lactuca using hydrated deep eutectic solvent.

We investigated the effectiveness of hydrated deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to achieve tunable seaweed cellulose microstructures from Ulva lactuca. Cellulose was extracted via a sequential chemical protocol, then treated with 30% DESs (choline chloride (ChCl) or betaine as hydrogen bond acceptors and urea, citric acid, or oxalic acid as donors) combined with mechanical shearing. While most DESs combinations yielded spherical seaweed cellulose microparticles (dry diameter of 605-777 nm), the ChCl:urea formulation successfully produced seaweed cellulose microfibers (SCMFs). These SCMFs exhibited

Ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent extraction of tyrosinase inhibitors from lotus seed peel powder.

Lotus seed peel powder (LSP), a major by-product of lotus seed processing, is rich in bioactive constituents but remains largely underutilized. Conventional aqueous and ethanolic extraction methods for LSP are constrained by low extraction efficiency and poor selectivity. In this study, an ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (DES) extraction (UADE) strategy was developed to recover tyrosinase inhibitors from LSP. UADE significantly enhanced flavonoid and polyphenol extraction compared with traditional methods. Among the tested DESs, the L-proline/lactic acid system exhibited the highest

Isolation of cellulose from Arundo donax L. using deep eutectic solvent for the preparation of regenerated fiber.

Arundo donax L. is a promising lignocellulosic biomass source for sustainable cellulose fiber production. However, pulping and spinning processes often rely on environmentally harmful solvents. Herein, A full-process deep eutectic solvent (DES) strategy is reported for efficient cellulose isolation from Arundo donax L. and direct fabrication of regenerated cellulose fibers. The approach combines acidic DES pretreatment with alkaline DES dissolution, significantly improving processing efficiency. The cellulose pulp achieves approximately 85% α-cellulose content while maintaining favorable speci
