Metabolic acidosis can result when herbivores consume browse diets high in plant secondary compounds. One mechanism for buffering excess acid is the mobilization of calcium and other alkaline salts from the skeletal system. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and other cervids consuming browse during antler formation may use minerals essential for antler development as buffers, resulting in altered antler characteristics. Our research objectives were to examine the effects of metabolic acidosis on mineral metabolism, acid-base homeostasis, and antler development in white-tailed deer. Fi

The total enumeration of enterococci from the rumen content of deer, their species determination, resistance to antibiotics with the predominant importance of vancomycin resistance, and their metabolic properties, were examined. Enterococci (2.0 x 10(2) CFU per ml) encountered from the rumen of deer were phenotypically allotted to the species Enterococcus casseliflavus (26.6%), E. gallinarum (26.6%) and E. faecium (6.6%). The other isolates were not phenotypically specified. Although the resistance to the other antibiotics was recorded, the emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci in a hi

Interspecies hybrids provide unique opportunities for fundamental genetic analyses and for genetic improvement of farmed deer. We have bred F1 hybrids by artificial insemination of red deer hinds (Cervus elaphus) with semen from Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus). The male and female F1 Père David deer x red deer hybrids were fertile and in matings with red deer have produced over 300 viable backcross hybrids. DNA was collected from the backcross progeny as an international reference panel for gene linkage mapping and to investigate associations between segregating species-specific genet

Thirteen Sika deer (Cervus nippon Temminck) showing ataxia on a stock farm in the north eastern district of China were examined histopathologically. The principal pathological changes were spongy vacuolation and myelin deficiency in the white matter of the spinal cord and brain stem, fibrosis and rupture of the elastic lamina of the spinal arterioles, and mesothelial hyperplasia in the spinal arachnoid. Other findings included defective formation of the elastic laminae of the aorta, and the blood vessels in the kidney and lung, hemosiderosis in the spleen and liver, and lymphocyte depletion in

Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the foot, infectious arthritis, angular limb deformities, patellar luxation, tendon contracture and injuries, and fractures encountered in sheep, goats, llamas, and deer are reviewed. These species share similar orthopedic problems to cattle, but management conditions, particularly for pet animals, may place special demands on the veterinarian treating these disease conditions. The mild temperament and relatively small body size of these animals make them excellent candidates for treatment of orthopedic problems often not amenable to practical treatment i

Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a progressive and uniformly fatal neurological disorder, is characterized neuropathologically by intraneuronal vacuolation, spongiform change of the neuropil and astrocytic hyperplasia and hypertrophy. Ultrastructural neuropathological findings consist of (1) extensive vacuolation in neuronal processes, within myelin sheaths, formed by splitting at the major dense lines or within axons; (2) dystrophic neurites (dendrites, axonal preterminals and myelinated axons containing degenerating mitochondria and pleomorphic, electron-dense inclusion bodies); (3) prominent

During 1988, pulmonary mycosis was diagnosed in four of 116 farmed deer examined on suspicion of tuberculosis. The histopathology showed allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis in a red deer (Cervus elaphus) and the agent was identified as a zygomycete, probably Absidia corymbifera, by immunofluorescence staining. Three fallow deer (Dama dama) had invasive necrotizing mycotic pneumonia and progressive exudative mycotic alveolitis caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. In the red deer, weakness due to paratuberculosis had probably promoted the mycotic infection. The three fallow deer were bred on another f

Serotests were conducted on axis (Axis axis) and fallow (Dama dama) deer at Point Reyes National Seashore to determine their status with respect to nine diseases enzootic to the native black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) or to resident dairy cattle. In the exotic deer, the proportion of animals that were seropositive included: anaplasmosis, 35%; bluetongue, 48%; brucellosis, 0%; bovine viral diarrhea, 2%; infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, 3%; leptospirosis, 7%; parainfluenza-3, 49%; toxoplasmosis, 8%; and Q fever, 51%. A male pseudohermaphrodite white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is described. The animal shot in Aiken County, South Carolina on November 4, 1971, was 1.5 years old and had the external appearance of an antlered doe. The 6 point antlers were in velvet, a vulva was present, and the testes were located in the body cavity. Other male reproductive organs present were epididymides, vasa deferentia and ampullae. Female reproductive organs present were cervix, vagina and clitoris.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for anthrax antibody in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was developed and used to evaluate a vaccination study and compare sera from hunter-killed deer in anthrax endemic and non-endemic areas. Deer subcutaneously vaccinated with anthrax avirulent spore vaccine developed specific antibody to protective antigen (PA) which was significantly higher than the non-vaccinated controls at 30, 60, 90, and 240 days post-vaccination. There was no difference between the levels of antibody to PA between deer in anthrax endemic and non-endemic areas.

Understanding the microbiota of wild animals can contribute to the monitoring of population health or habitat changes. The skin microbiota of fallow deer remains poorly characterized and represents a gap in current veterinary microbiology research. The aim of this study was to analyse skin microbiota of fifteen clinically healthy fallow deer using next-generation sequencing. Genomic DNA was extracted from superficial skin swabs collected from three anatomical sites per individual (n = 45 samples) and sequenced targeting the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using Illumina sequencing.

Fascioloidosis is a parasitic disease caused by allochthonous parasite Fascioloides magna. In Europe, three types of final hosts are recognised: definitive, aberrant, and dead end. Several countries have launched disease control programmes using medicated feed, with different drugs, to control F. magna infections. In this study, we used corn treated with Albix® 10 in a total dose of 60 mg/kg of body weight for five consecutive days (12 mg/kg per day). Following successful treatment, a destroyed pseudocyst with different amounts of degrading material and decaying flukes was detected. A total of

BACKGROUND: Antlers are unique bones and are very characteristic secondary sexual organs of cervids males. Rapid growth of its can cause physiological exhaustion and seasonal osteoporosis. Antlers develop with the age of the male, which is also related to his physiological and psychological ability to reproduce. Males of fallow deer reaches sexual maturity in its second year of life, only males over 5 years of age usually participate in reproduction, but most often stags aged 7 years and older. For this reason, the aim of the study was to analyze the mechanical properties of antlers of farmed

The trematode Fascioloides magna is originally a parasite of North American deer species. Upon its arrival to Europe, F. magna met new intermediate and final hosts. Depending on the type of host, the clinical picture, pathological findings, epidemiology and outcome can vary significantly. As an aberrant host, it was long believed that the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) fails to develop pseudocysts, and therefore the infected animal dies before the parasite can mature and start to produce eggs. In this study, 676 roe deer livers were collected in Croatia during the hunting years of four consecu

Fasciola hepatica is a species of zoonotic liver flukes with a broad range of definitive hosts worldwide. However, this liver fluke has not been detected in Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus). This study provides the first evidence for Korean water deer being a definitive host of F. hepatica.

Salinomycin, belonging to ionophore antibiotics, has been used as a feed additive for poultry for its coccidiostatic effect. Poisoning by ionophore antibiotics has been reported in cattle and other sensitive animals due to the replacement of medicated feed and/or accidental overdoses. The aim of this paper is to report the toxicity of salinomycin for fallow deer and to describe the different levels of sensitivity of cervids to this substance. In the presented case study, a medicated feed containing ivermectin used for deworming red deer and fallow deer was accidentally contaminated with sodium

Studies of the normal skull anatomy of the Patagonian Huemul deer are scarce. Currently, the findings of bone lesions in the skull associated with metabolic imbalances are frequent in the literature. The objective of this study was to provide anatomical and morphometric data of the cranium and facies including a morphofunctional interpretation as a reference for clinical, ecomorphological and educational purposes. Five skulls were described, measured, scanned and digitally reconstructed. The presence of a caudal projection of the vomer bone, the absence of the facial tubercle and thin bones fo

BACKGROUND: Powassan virus (POWV) is a tick-transmitted pathogen that may cause severe encephalitis; experimentally, it can be transmitted within just 15 minutes following a tick bite. The deer tick virus subtype of POWV (DTV) is transmitted by the deer tick and is the likely cause of the increase in the number of POWV cases reported in the United States. However, DTV has only been definitively documented in 6 patients by molecular analysis of the virus.
METHODS: Two patients from Connecticut with encephalitis, who had a recent deer tick bite, were evaluated by the relevant serologic tests to

In 2012 when many sheep flocks in northern-central Tasmania were experiencing a high prevalence of ovine Johne's disease, 34 wild adult fallow deer shot on or near infected properties were negative to microscopic Mptb lesions of the ileo-caecal valve, terminal ileum and ileo-caecal lymph nodes. This study demonstrated 95% confidence of detecting Johne's disease in this fallow deer population if ≥10% of animals were shedding Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis in their faeces, or if ≥21% of animals were sub-clinically infected.
