Frontal and temporo-parietal changes in delta and alpha power accompany stress-induced vasoconstriction and blood pressure response.

Exaggerated blood pressure and vasoconstriction responses during acute mental stress are prospectively associated with an increased risk of hypertension, arrhythmia, and vascular dysfunction. This study assessed electrophysiological brain power and cardiovascular response to acute psychological stress during concurrent recordings of magnetoencephalography, muscle sympathetic nerve activity, and blood pressure in 29 healthy participants. Brain power was filtered through delta (1-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha (8-13 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz), low gamma (30-80 Hz), and high gamma (80-120 Hz) bands. Stre

Cross-Frequency Coupling as a Biomarker for Early Stroke Recovery.

BACKGROUND: The application of neuroimaging-based biomarkers in stroke has enriched our understanding of post-stroke recovery mechanisms, including alterations in functional connectivity based on synchronous oscillatory activity across various cortical regions. Phase-amplitude coupling, a type of cross-frequency coupling, may provide additional mechanistic insight. OBJECTIVE: To determine how the phase of prefrontal cortex delta (1-3 Hz) oscillatory activity mediates the amplitude of motor cortex beta (13-20 Hz) oscillations in individual's early post-stroke. METHODS: Participants admitted t

Anxiety and feedback processing in a gambling task: Contributions of time-frequency theta and delta.

The feedback negativity (FN) event-related potential (ERP) is widely studied during gambling feedback tasks. However, research on FN and anxiety is minimal and the findings are mixed. To clarify these discrepancies, the current study (N = 238) used time-frequency analysis to disentangle overlapping contributions of delta (0-3 Hz) and theta (3-7 Hz) to feedback processing in a clinically anxious sample, with severity assessed through general worry and physiological arousal scales. Greater general worry showed enhanced delta- and theta-FN broadly across both gain and loss conditions, with theta-

Theta- and delta-band EEG network dynamics during a novelty oddball task.

While the P3 component during target detection and novelty processing has been widely studied, less is known about its underlying network dynamics. A recent cognitive model suggests that frontal-parietal and frontal-temporal interregional connectivity are related to attention/action selection and target-related memory updating during the P3, respectively, but empirical work testing this model is lacking. Other work suggests the importance of theta- and delta-band connectivity between the medial frontal cortex and distributed cortical regions during attention, stimulus detection, and response s

Are There Any Specific EEG Findings in Autoimmune Epilepsies?

This study evaluated the EEG findings of patients whose seizures were associated with a possible autoimmune etiology. Our aim was to find clues to distinguish patients with antineuronal antibodies (Ab) through EEG studies. We reviewed our database and identified antineuronal Ab positive epilepsy patients with or without autoimmune encephalitis. These patients had Abs to N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) (n = 5), glycine receptor (GLY-R) (n = 5), contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR-2) (n = 4), uncharacterized voltage-gated potassium channel complex (VGKC) antigens (n = 2), glutamic a

Neural response to errors among mothers with a history of recurrent depression and their adolescent daughters.

Depression is transmitted within families, but the mechanisms involved in such transmission are not clearly defined. A potential marker of familial risk is the neural response to errors, which may play a role in depression symptoms and is known to be partially heritable. Here, 97 mother-daughter dyads completed a Flanker task while electroencephalography markers of error monitoring were recorded: the error-related negativity (ERN) and response-locked delta and theta power. We assessed whether these measures of neural response to errors 1) were associated with history of recurrent major depress

Molecular and electrophysiological evidence for "remodeling" of the L-type Ca2+ channel in persistent atrial fibrillation in humans.

Persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with shortened action potential duration (APD) and reduced atrial refractoriness. Remodeling of ion currents responsible for AP morphology has been proposed as a major mechanism in persistent AF. In the present study we investigated the activity of the cardiac L-type Ca2+ channel and the mRNA transcription of the cardiac L-type Ca2+ channel subunits in patients with persistent AF compared to patients in sinus rhythm (SR). Right atrial appendages of 10 patients in SR and of 5 patients with AF were used for myocyte isolations to record L-type Ca2

The Effect of Traumatic Brain Injury on Sleep Architecture and Circadian Rhythms in Mice-A Comparison of High-Frequency Head Impact and Controlled Cortical Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant risk factor for the development of sleep and circadian rhythm impairments. In this study we compare the circadian rhythms and sleep patterns in the high-frequency head impact (HFHI) and controlled cortical impact (CCI) mouse models of TBI. These mouse models have different injury mechanisms key differences of pathology in brain regions controlling circadian rhythms and EEG wave generation. We found that both HFHI and CCI caused dysregulation in the diurnal expression of core circadian genes (Bmal1, Clock, Per1,2, Cry1,2) at 24 h post-TBI. CCI mice

Inter-Rater Reliability of EEG-Based Encephalopathy Grading.

PURPOSE: Visual EEG Confusion Assessment Method-Severity (VE-CAM-S) quantifies encephalopathy severity based on electroencephalography features. This study evaluated inter-rater reliability among experts using the VE-CAM-S scale. METHODS: Nine experts from six institutions independently reviewed 32 15-second electroencephalography samples in an online test, assessing 29 features (16 in the VE-CAM-S and 13 additional, or "VE-CAM-S+"). A consensus of three experts served as the gold standard. Performance was measured by the median Matthews correlation coefficient between expert and gold-standar

Isolated noncompaction of ventricular myocardium associated with fatal ventricular fibrillation.

A female infant with isolated noncompaction of ventricular myocardium who developed ventricular tachyarrhythmia is described. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome was shown by electrocardiography. At 9 months of age, the patient suddenly developed cardiac arrest. Electrocardiography following resuscitation with DC cardioversion demonstrated sinus rhythm without delta wave. The QT interval was normal. Frequent premature ventricular captures caused ventricular fibrillation. DC cardioversion was necessary to terminate frequent attacks of ventricular fibrillation until the introduction of beta blockers

Supraventricular tachycardia that mimics ventricular tachycardia.

A short PR interval, a delta wave, and attacks of paroxysmal tachycardia are the principal features of the WPW syndrome. A grossly irregular rhythm with bizzare QRS complexes at rates exceeding 180 per minute is one of the paroxysmal tachycardias characteristic of the WPW syndrome. This arrhythmia deserves special attention, because it is often misinterpretated as ventricular tachycardia. The interpretation is atrial fibrillation with varying degrees of ventricular fusion and phasic ventricular aberration. Prompt electrical cardioversion is indicated because, at times, ventricular fibrillation

Functional connectivity of frontal cortex in healthy and ADHD children reflected in EEG coherence.

Abnormal functional brain connectivity is a candidate factor in developmental brain disorders associated with cognitive dysfunction. We analyzed a substantial (10 min per subject) record of dense array electroencephalography with spectral power and coherence methods in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (n = 42) and control (n = 21) 10- to 13-year-old children. We found topographically distinct narrow band coherence differences between subject groups: ADHD subjects showed elevated coherence in the lower alpha (8 Hz) band and reduced coherence in the upper alpha (10-11 Hz) band. Electroencephalographic and polygraphic features of 24-hour recordings in sleeping sickness and healthy African subjects.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) and polygraphic features were analysed in six healthy control subjects and eight patients suffering from sleeping sickness meningoencephalitis in order to determine possible functional relationships. One patient was disqualified because of intermittent metabolic disease. Twenty-four h polygraphic recordings-EEG, electrooculography (EOG), electromyography (EMG), nasal and buccal air flow, chest respiratory movements-were performed continuously both on paper and on cassette tapes. Tapes were played back on paper (paper speed: 15 mm/s). Traces were analyzed for norma

[Atypical electroencephalographic activity in terminal phase subacute sclerosing panencephalitis].

The authors describe the evolution of the EEG during a 3-yr period in a case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) revealed by epilepsy in a 9 yr-old boy. During the first 2 yr, the EEG was markedly abnormal (diffuse spike-waves, delta rhythms). During the static period, it looked like a continuous non-convulsive status epilepticus. The typical periodic abnormal activity only appeared at the terminal stage, and after a Valium test. Then slow wave complexes persisted on a dysrhythmic background. This type of EEG has never been described; our study stressed the efficacy of the Valium tes

Maladaptive neural synchrony in tinnitus: origin and restoration.

Tinnitus is the conscious perception of sound heard in the absence of physical sound sources external or internal to the body, reflected in aberrant neural synchrony of spontaneous or resting-state brain activity. Neural synchrony is generated by the nearly simultaneous firing of individual neurons, of the synchronization of membrane-potential changes in local neural groups as reflected in the local field potentials, resulting in the presence of oscillatory brain waves in the EEG. Noise-induced hearing loss, often resulting in tinnitus, causes a reorganization of the tonotopic map in auditory

Normal Electrical Activity of the Brain in Obsessive-Compulsive Patients After Anodal Stimulation of the Left Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) has been used as a non-invasive method to increase the plasticity of brain. Growing evidence has shown several brain disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain syndrome are improved following tDCS. In patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), increased brain rhythm activity particularly in the frontal lobe has been reported in several studies using Eectroencephalogram (EEG). To our knowledge, no research has been done on the effects of electrical stimulation on brain signals of patients with OCD. We me

Anti-NMDA-R encephalitis: Should we consider extreme delta brush as electrical status epilepticus?

Seizures are common clinical manifestations in anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDA-R) encephalitis, among other neurological and psychiatric symptoms. During the course of the disease, some specific EEG patterns have been described: generalized rhythmic delta activity (GRDA) and extreme delta brush (EDB). In comatose patients, the association of these EEG abnormalities with subtle motor manifestations can suggest ongoing non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). We report the case of a 28-year-old woman admitted for a clinical presentation typical of anti-NMDA-R encephalitis, which w

Clinical associations of occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity.

Association of occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity with absence seizures has been well documented in the published literature. Two recent studies have also described an association with focal seizures. After obtaining approval from our Institutional Review Board, all electroencephalograms with occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity at our institution between July 1, 2006 and December 31, 2009 were identified. Charts of these patients were reviewed to collect clinical data. A matched comparison group was assembled. Thirty-one of the patients who met criteria had evaluable cli

[Electrical activity of the cortex and subcortical structures during the development of hypoxia due to blood loss].

Previous experiments on dogs showed that in several cases, along with the development of hypoxia, polymorphous delta-waves changed into synchronous oscillations, also of delta range, the so-called standard slow complexes (SSC). The new experimental data showed discharges of neuronal pool during SSC to be present in the caudate nucleus, lateral and medial thalamus, hypothalamus, hypocampus, n. amygdale, and mesencephalic reticular formation. The most frequent neuronal pulse activity was connected with the second half of the SSC negative phase (P is less than 0.01). Discharge flashes of the neur
