Standardizing Disaster Health Data Visualization Using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources in Indonesia: Dashboard Development and Technical Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Health data management during disasters enables responders to assess the needs of survivors, efficiently allocate resources, and monitor survivors' health conditions. However, government agencies need to interpret health data in real time during disasters because the volume and complexity of such data can hinder timely decision-making. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to develop a visual interface for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)-based data from various sources, using the daily report form of the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Medical Teams Minimu

Zero-inflated Poisson regression analysis of factors associated with under-five mortality in Ethiopia using 2019 Ethiopian mini demographic and health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Remarkable reduction in global under-five mortality has been seen over the past two decades. However, Ethiopia is among the five countries which account for about half (49%) of all under-five mortality worldwide. This study aimed at identifying factors associated with under-five children mortality in Ethiopia using the 2019 Ethiopia mini demography and health survey data. METHODS: The most recent national representative demography and health survey data of Ethiopia, 2019 Ethiopia mini demography and health survey data, were used for this study. Count data regression models were ap

Future premature mortality due to O3, secondary inorganic aerosols and primary PM in Europe--sensitivity to changes in climate, anthropogenic emissions, population and building stock.

Air pollution is an important environmental factor associated with health impacts in Europe and considerable resources are used to reduce exposure to air pollution through emission reductions. These reductions will have non-linear effects on exposure due, e.g., to interactions between climate and atmospheric chemistry. By using an integrated assessment model, we quantify the effect of changes in climate, emissions and population demography on exposure and health impacts in Europe. The sensitivity to the changes is assessed by investigating the differences between the decades 2000-2009, 2050-20

The global landscape of smallpox vaccination history and implications for current and future orthopoxvirus susceptibility: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: More than four decades after the eradication of smallpox, the ongoing 2022 monkeypox outbreak and increasing transmission events of other orthopoxviruses necessitate a greater understanding of the global distribution of susceptibility to orthopoxviruses. We aimed to characterise the current global landscape of smallpox vaccination history and orthopoxvirus susceptibility. METHODS: We characterised the global landscape of smallpox vaccination at a subnational scale by integrating data on current demography with historical smallpox vaccination programme features (coverage and cessat

Antibodies to Ro/La, Cenp-B, and snRNPs antigens in autoimmune hepatitis of North America versus Asia: patterns of immunofluorescence, ELISA reactivities, and HLA association.

To assess whether demography is one of the important factors determining antibody response to nuclear antigens [ANA: SSA-Ro (52K and 60K), SSB-La, snRNPs (A, 70K, B'/B), and Cenp-B], we investigated 95 and 47 sera of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) from North America and Asia, respectively, by immunofluorescent (IF) and recombinant ELISA. Correlations among nuclear IF patterns, ELISA, and disease indices were analyzed. The frequency and titer of individual antibodies differed significantly between the groups. Patients with speckled patterns were younger in both regions and had higher aspartate amin

Using Bayesian state-space models to understand the population dynamics of the dominant malaria vector, Anopheles funestus in rural Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: It is often assumed that the population dynamics of the malaria vector Anopheles funestus, its role in malaria transmission and the way it responds to interventions are similar to the more elaborately characterized Anopheles gambiae. However, An. funestus has several unique ecological features that could generate distinct transmission dynamics and responsiveness to interventions. The objectives of this work were to develop a model which will: (1) reconstruct the population dynamics, survival, and fecundity of wild An. funestus populations in southern Tanzania, (2) quantify impacts

Where art thou louse? A snapshot of attachment location preferences in salmon lice on Atlantic salmon hosts in sea cages.

Problematic sea lice infestations on farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) have motivated extensive research and development into new methods to prevent, monitor and control sea lice. Most of these technologies require detailed information on the behaviour, spatial distribution and demography of lice on host fish. This study investigated how salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation density varies across the host's surface under sea cage farming conditions. Lice abundance, demography and attachment location were tracked over time, with repeated sampling of 300 individually tagged salmon

Endemic chronic wasting disease causes mule deer population decline in Wyoming.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal transmissible spongiform encephalopathy affecting white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), and moose (Alces alces shirasi) in North America. In southeastern Wyoming average annual CWD prevalence in mule deer exceeds 20% and appears to contribute to regional population declines. We determined the effect of CWD on mule deer demography using age-specific, female-only, CWD transition matrix models to estimate the population growth rate (λ). Mule deer were captured from 2010-201

Hydrology and density feedbacks control the ecology of intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis across habitats in seasonal climates.

We report about field and theoretical studies on the ecology of the aquatic snails (Bulinus spp. and Biomphalaria pfeifferi) that serve as obligate intermediate hosts in the complex life cycle of the parasites causing human schistosomiasis. Snail abundance fosters disease transmission, and thus the dynamics of snail populations are critically important for schistosomiasis modeling and control. Here, we single out hydrological drivers and density dependence (or lack of it) of ecological growth rates of local snail populations by contrasting novel ecological and environmental data with various m

Pathogenesis of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis.

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is an important cause of ocular disease both in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent individuals. Non-ocular infections are not usually serious in otherwise healthy adults. In contrast, toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis is a progressive, recurring disease that can cause severe morbidity. Here, Fiona Roberts and Rima McLeod review the demography, pathology and clinical findings of this disease. They discuss mechanisms of retinal destruction and disease recurrences, and the local immunological response at this immune-privileged site.
