[Changes in the dental hard tissues and the supporting structures in tetanic syndrome. 2. Personal studies].

The authors present the changes of the orofacial system observed in 30 patients (of both sexes) with tetanic syndrome in the framework of a pilot study. The DMF-S values varied for different age groups from 40.6 to 79.5. The hypoplasia index was 1.3-2.1; and the periodontal disease index according to Kötzschke, 18.6-48.2%. Epithelial desquamation of varying markedness and intensity was seen in half of the patients. The interpretations of the radiographs revealed generalized denticle formation in 13.3% of the 30 patients; and isolated denticles in 73.3%. The authors observed a loosening of the

[Radiographic manifestations in teeth and jaws in chronic kidney insufficiency].

Forty-five patients affected with chronic renal failure (29 men and 16 women; mean age: 47.8 years), treated with hemodialysis for 4 to 245 months (mean: 66.9 months) were examined with panoramic and skeletal radiographs-the latter of the skull, hands, shoulders and clavicles, pelvis and spine. The control group (45 subjects with no renal diseases) was examined only with panoramic radiography. Dental and skeletal radio-graphs were given an 0-6 score and then compared to assess a possible relationship between skeletal and dental changes at radiography. Twenty-six dialysis patients (57.7%) had r

A Thai mother and son with distal symphalangism, hypoplastic carpal bones, microdontia, dental pulp stones, and narrowing of the zygomatic arch: a new distal symphalangism syndrome?

A Thai mother and son with distal symphalangism and other associated abnormalities are reported. Distal and middle phalanges of fingers and toes 2-5 were either aplastic/hypoplastic or fused between the corresponding digits. The second fingers and fourth fingernails were most severely affected in both patients. The mother's hands were less severely affected; the middle and distal phalanges of her hands were malformed and fused. Besides the absence of fusion lines, the shape of the fused middle and distal phalanges was quite different from that of other types of fusion, i.e., fused bones in bot

Transmigration of impacted canines: prevalence, management and implications on tooth structure and pulp vitality of adjacent teeth.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of transmigrant canines in a sample of panoramic radiographs of a random Greek population, to classify them and evaluate clinically and radiographically all the implications for adjacent teeth. Panoramic radiographs of 3,586 patients retrieved from eight private practices between 1998 and 2009, were examined. Panoramic radiographs with extracted canines were not included in this study. An impacted canine was considered to be transmigrant when at least part of its length had crossed the midline. Six radiographs exhibited transmigrant canines

Intracanal delivery of Resolvin E1 controls inflammation in necrotic immature rat teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Pulp necrosis in immature teeth and the resulting periodontal apical inflammation negatively affect root formation. Resolvin E1 (RvE1) is a lipid-derived endogenous pro-resolution molecule that controls inflammation. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of RvE1 applied as an intracanal medication on root formation in nonvital immature teeth. METHODS: To arrest root development, pulpectomy was performed in the lower first molars of 4-week-old Wistar rats. After 3 weeks, irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 0.9% sterile saline was performed, and either

A study of the mineral phase of pulp calcification.

Physico-chemical properties of pulp calcification were studied by means of X-ray microbeam diffraction, electron spin resonance (ESR), X-ray energy-dispersive analysis, and chemical analysis. The material was obtained from the second molar of the right mandible of a 25-year-old woman. X-ray diffraction and ESR analyses showed that calcium salts of the calcification are deposited in the form of apatitie, possibly carbonate-containing apatite. Furthermore, the mineral phase of the calcification was found to be similar to that of bone rather than that of dentin with regard to crystallinity and in

Osteopontin Is Essential for Type I Collagen Secretion in Reparative Dentin.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a highly phosphorylated glycoprotein that is a prominent component of the mineralized extracellular matrix of bone. The secretion of OPN by immunocompetent cells plays a role in the differentiation of odontoblast-like cells during pulpal healing following tooth transplantation. This study aimed to clarify the role of OPN during reparative dentinogenesis. A groove-shaped cavity was prepared on the mesial surface of the upper first molars of wild-type (WT) and Opn knockout (KO) mice, and the samples were collected at intervals of 1 to 14 d. The demineralized sections were pr

Could carotid artery calcifications and pulp stones be an alarm sign for diabetes mellitus? A retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Carotid artery calcifications and pulpal stones are radiopaque findings that may be found accidentally in panoramic views. The risk of affliction with atherosclerotic events in diabetic patients with dystrophic calcification is questionable. This study aimed to investigate the relative frequency of carotid calcifications and pulp stones in panoramic radiographs of diabetic patients. METHODS: This retrospective observational study employed a convenience sampling method involving 107 diabetic patients. For comparison, 300 panoramic views from individuals estimated to be healthy in t

Invasive cervical resorption: a review.

Invasive cervical resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption exhibiting no external signs. The resorptive condition is often detected by routine radiographic examination. The clinical features vary from a small defect at the gingival margin to a pink coronal discoloration of the tooth crown resulting in ultimate cavitation of the overlying enamel which is painless unless pulpal or periodontal infection supervenes. Radiographic features of lesions vary from well-delineated to irregularly bordered mottled radiolucencies, and these can be confused with dental caries. A c

One-visit apexification: technique for inducing root-end barrier formation in apical closures.

Numerous procedures and materials have been utilized to induce root-end barrier formation. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was introduced to dentistry as a root-end filling material. It has been advocated for filling root canals, repairing perforations, pulp capping, and root-end induction. Mineral trioxide aggregate reacts with tissue fluids to form a hard tissue apical barrier. As a result, MTA shows promise as a valuable material for use in one-visit apexification treatment, primarily for treating immature teeth with necrotic pulps.

Endodontic and aesthetic management of a conoid tooth with type IIIA dens invaginatus.

BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus is a dental developmental abnormality caused by an infolding of the enamel organ into the adjacent dental papilla before the calcification of the dental tissues. The clinical presentation of dens invaginatus varies according to its severity, from mild forms, in which we might find a deeper than normal cingulum pit, to severe cases, in which there is a pronounced infolding reaching the apical foramen. The very nature of the invagination favours the contamination from the oral environment to the pulp space and the onset of caries. Therefore, patients might present wi

[Physiology and pharmacology of hard tissues--effect of chemicals on the formation and the resorption mechanism of tooth and bone].

This review described the effects of several drugs on the formation and the resorption mechanism of tooth and bone. The enamel formed during high fluoride exposure showed marked hypocalcification, and the organic substances appeared on the incisors in these regions. Such changes following fluoride administration appear to indicate an inhibition of the mineral deposition and/or an inhibition of organic matrix withdrawal. The successive bisphosphonate (HEBP) injections reduced both the progress of the mineral deposition and the formation of the enamel matrix. Colchicine showed a remarkable inhib
