Ascher Syndrome: Acquired Double Lower Lip Combined With Epulis Fissuratum.

Ascher syndrome is characterized by double lip, blepharochalasis, and non-toxic goiter triad. This condition of unknown etiology usually occurs in patients younger than 20 years of age. In this case report, the authors present the diagnostic process of Ascher syndrome and surgical procedure of double lower lip in a female patient who applied to our clinic for prosthetic reasons. A 70-year old female patient was referred to our clinic with the chief complaint of incompatible dentures. The patient had been using the same complete dentures for 40 years. Extraoral clinical examination revealed pro

Educational Challenges Associated with Edentulous Models for Teaching Structure of Edentulous Mucosa and Submucosa of Older Adults.

As a population ages, the need for complete dentures and other large, removable prostheses remains high in edentulous adults. Appropriate denture fabrication requires comprehension of the anatomical structures of the edentulous mucosa and submucosa. This study aimed to clarify the educational challenges of teaching these structures. Dental student level of comprehension and instructor perception of teaching difficulty when using edentulous models were evaluated. Participants comprised 137 third-year dental students at Tokyo Dental College. Before a lecture on anatomical landmarks and the struc

Efficacy of conventional and implant-supported mandibular resection prostheses: study overview and treatment outcomes.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: While surgical restoration of mandibular resections has advanced dramatically with free-flap techniques, oral function and patient perceptions of function, as well as treatment outcomes, often indicate significant impairment. PURPOSE: This longitudinal prospective study was designed to determine whether conventional prostheses (CP) or implant-supported prostheses (IP) and current surgical reconstructive procedures restore patients' oral functions and quality of life to their status prior to segmental mandibulectomy with immediate fibula free-flap reconstruction. Study de

Effect of complete denture wearing on tongue motor biomechanics during swallowing in edentulous older adults.

AIM: Contact of the tongue against the hard palate plays an important role in swallowing. Therefore, age-related decline in tongue function has received much attention. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of complete denture wearing on tongue motor biomechanics during swallowing in healthy edentulous older adults. METHODS: A total of 19 edentulous patients (6 males and 13 females, mean age 76.2 ± 7.2 years) without any history of neuromuscular disease or dysphagia were selected. All patients were wearing complete dentures in both the upper and lower jaws. Tongue pre

Differential diagnosis of jaw pain in the elderly.

While many diseases are marked by pain in the mandible or maxilla, a number of these conditions appear to be more prevalent in people 65 years and older. People in this age group often have a number of medical problems and take a variety of medications, so clear-cut diagnosis of jaw pain can be difficult. Memory deficits or concomitant somatic complaints can further complicate the diagnosis. This article presents a differential for jaw pain in the elderly and reports on a pertinent case.

Factors associated with self-reported halitosis (SRH) and perceived taste disturbance (PTD) in elderly.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of self-reported halitosis (SRH) and perceived taste disturbance (PTD) and analyze their association with age, gender, subjective oral dryness, burning mouth, tongue coating, number of teeth remaining, and type of dentures and wear duration in healthy elderly. Subjects who neither reported systemic disorders nor medication use were included in the study. The participants of this study were 254 healthy subjects, 116 males (mean age: 63.2+/-7.2 years) and 138 females (mean age: 61.9+/-6.8 years), all aged 55 years and above. A self-administere

EAO consensus conference: economic evaluation of implant-supported prostheses.

OBJECTIVE: There are various alternatives for the management of oral conditions that may lead to or already have lead to partial or full edentulism. Economic evaluations measure the efficiency of alternative healthcare interventions and provide useful information for decision-making and the allocation of scarce resources. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The current English literature dealing with "cost-effectiveness" of dental implant therapy versus different alternative treatment modalities, that is, complete and fixed partial dentures, root canal, and periodontal treatment, has been included in this

[Comparative analysis of edentulous patients treated traditionally and with the use of a face-bow and Quick Master articulator].

Correct determination of the occlusal plane is one of the most difficult stages of treatment. After determining the correct occlusal plane its reproduction is possible thanks to the use of articulators. These instruments simulate movements of the jaw in three planes. One of the most optimal articulators is a semi-adjustable type. These instruments are not complicated and give good treatment results. A modern semiadjustable type of articulator is Quick Master. The face-bow which comes together with this instrument is used for recording and transferring the occlusal relation to the articulator.

Responses of jawbone to pressure.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a literature review of bone resorption of edentulous jaws focusing on responses to pressure. BACKGROUND: After the extraction of all teeth in a jaw there is a continuous reduction of the residual ridge. The individual variation of bone resorption is great, and the aetiology is complex and not yet well understood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of the literature published up to May 2003 on bone resorption and pressure was performed using PubMed/Medline. RESULTS: Animal studies have demonstrated that excessive and constant pressure induces bone resorption. Recent experi

Tooth-Supported Overdenture: Rediscovering What We Thought We Outgrew.

Edentulism results in impairment, functional limitations, and ultimately psychological and social disabilities. It is a significant factor in residual ridge resorption, leading to a decreased alveolar bone height and a reduced denture-bearing area. A tooth-supported overdenture (TSOD) represents one cost-effective treatment modality for patients requiring removable dentures and helps preserve tooth structure and proprioception, maintain alveolar bone to delay complete tooth loss, provide extra support and stability, and improve chewing efficiency. This case report describes the successful use

Prosthodontic rehabilitation for a patient with acromegaly.

Acromegaly is a condition which results from an excess of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland after epiphyseal plate closure at puberty. The most common cause of acromegaly is a benign pituitary adenoma. Acromegaly is characterised by enlargement of the hands, feet, nose and ears; expansion of the skull and pronounced brow protrusion. From an oral standpoint, the most relevant symptoms are mandibular protrusion, spacing of the lower teeth and macroglossia. A 46 year-old patient was referred to University Dental School and Hospital by her General Dental Practitioner. The patient had

[Dental rehabilitation in a young patient with glycogen storage disease type 1B].

A young woman, known to have glycogen storage disease type 1B (GSD1B) presents with severe periodontitis. GDS1B causes decreased hepatic and renal glucose production and in many cases neutropenia and neutrophil dysfunction leading to recurrent infections. It was decided to treat the patient by extraction of the most affected teeth and retention of the remaining teeth through periodontal treatment, both with antibiotic prophylaxis. After a follow-up period of 1.5 years, during which there was no visible improvement, it was decided to do a full dental extraction and fabricate complete dentures.

Oral health outcomes following early-life exposure to war-related hardship: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The Holocaust was a uniquely traumatic historical event marked by prolonged periods of starvation, extreme physical and psychological stress, and deprivation of basic human rights. While previous research has explored the general health consequences of Holocaust exposure, the long-term effects on oral health have received limited attention. Oral health is an essential component of overall well-being, with edentulism (complete tooth loss) recognized as a marker of severe oral disease and functional impairment in older adults. This purpose of this study was to assess the long-term im

Short-term data suggests cognitive benefits in the elderly with single-implant overdentures.

DESIGN: This study was an extension of a randomized crossover clinical trial approved by the institutional ethics committee (approval number: D2014-148) and adhered to the CONSORT guidelines. The original study juxtaposed patient contentment with single-implant overdentures (1-IODs) against conventional complete dentures (CCDs), with patient satisfaction being the primary focus. In this follow-up study, the cognitive function of edentulous patients receiving 1-IODs was assessed, specifically monitoring for the emergence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) throughout a three-year period. A prospective study of implant-supported full-arch yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal mandibular fixed dental prostheses: three-year results.

PURPOSE: The development of high-strength oxide ceramic materials has led to increased interest in all-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Success rates reported in clinical studies for all-ceramic FDPs based on high-strength oxide ceramic materials reportedly approach those of porcelain-fused-to-metal FDPs. These reconstructions, however, are still of limited size and have mainly concerned FDPs supported by natural teeth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of multiunit all-ceramic FDPs supported by dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients recei
