Studies on leukemic cells in a patient suffering from exfoliative dermatitis (due to chronic lymphatic leukemia), especially by scanning electron microscopy.

Lymphocytes (T cells and B cells) of a patient with chronic lymphatic leukemia (CLL) were studied immunologically and scanning electron microscopically. The subpopulation percentage of rosette forming cells (T cell) and surface immunoglobulin bearing cells (B cell) were decreased in the peripheral blood. Moreover, tritiated thymidine uptake by lymphocytes in the cell culture stimulated by phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), porkweed mitogen (PWM) and purified protein derivatives (PPDs) was decreased. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed many long villi on the surface of the lymphocytes in the peri

Conditioned medium from stem cells of human exfoliated deciduous teeth ameliorates mouse ovalbumin-specific allergic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin disease, is characterized by intense itching and recurrent eczema-like lesions, requiring safer, more targeted therapies that modulate the immune response and restore skin barrier integrity. Conditioned medium derived from stem cells of human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED-CM) exhibits considerable immunomodulatory and regenerative effects. We evaluated the efficacy of SHED-CM in an AD-like mouse model and explored the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Mice with ovalbumin (OVA)-specific allergic dermatitis (OSAD) were intravenous

Stem Cells from Human Exfoliated Deciduous Teeth Attenuate Atopic Dermatitis Symptoms in Mice through Modulating Immune Balance and Skin Barrier Function.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic skin inflammatory disease associated with immune abnormalities and disrupted skin barrier function. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been suggested as an alternative therapeutic option in AD. Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs) are a unique postnatal stem cell population with high immunomodulatory properties. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of SHEDs on AD in the BALB/c mouse model induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). SHEDs were administrated intravenously or subcutaneously, and clinical severity, histopathologic

Severe dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome in a child.

Dapsone (4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone, DDS), a potent anti-inflammatory agent, is widely used in the treatment of leprosy and several chronic inflammatory skin diseases. Dapsone therapy rarely results in development of dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome, which is characterized by fever, hepatitis, generalized exfoliative dermatitis, and lymphadenopathy. Here, we describe the case of an 11-year-old Korean boy who initially presented with high fever, a morbilliform skin rash, generalized lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and leukopenia after 6 weeks of dapsone intake. Subsequently, he exhibited

Erythroderma with fulminant hepatitis: a possible association.

Exfoliative dermatitis or erythroderma may be a sign of systemic disease, usually a T-cell lymphoma, although other malignancies may also be associated. We observed two patients in whom severe hepatitis and an exfoliative dermatitis occurred simultaneously. We believe that this association has not been reported previously.

[Paraneoplastic erythroderma: apropos of a case].

A 63-year-old male patient had severe exfoliative dermatitis (erythroderma) which led to the discovery of squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The possibility of paraneoplastic erythroderma is discussed. Although such an aetiology is rare, 5 cases with a similar paraneoplastic syndrome have been previously reported, which cannot be considered as a merely fortuitous association of exfoliative dermatitis and visceral cancer.

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS) is a disease primarily of young children, characterized by exfoliative dermatitis caused by exfoliative toxin producing Staphylococcus aureus. We had three cases of SSSS with varied dermatological manifestations-diffuse/scarlitiniform erythema, generalized exfoliation, sand paper skin texture, flaccid bullae, erosions, seborrheic dermatitis like scaling and cracking in skin creases which can be confused with other skin conditions. Hence, a high index of suspicion, early diagnosis and prompt treatment is imperative.

Atopic dermatitis and Ritter's disease: differential diagnosis by means of total and specific serum IgE.

Atopic dermatitis and Ritter's disease in infants and children frequently present diagnostic as well as therapeutic problems. Both conditions are characterized by generalized exfoliative dermatitis, and are prone to recurrent infections with Staphylococcus. However, in Ritter's disease, it has been shown that these are specifically coagulase-positive Staphylococcus phage Group 2 organisms. This combination of exfoliative dermatitis, with lysis and separation of the skin, associated with infection has been aptly named the staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. An unusual case is reported herein

[Clinical aspects and etiology of erythroderma: an analysis of 64 cases].

The difficulty of exfoliative dermatitis lies in the finding of underlying causes. In the present study the profile of 64 patients with erythroderma diagnosed between 1.1.1990 and 31.12.1999 were analysed. Clinical, histological and laboratory findings and their relationship to the aetiology were investigated. A masculine:feminine ratio of 2.6:1 was found. Among these patients the most common causative factors were pre-existing dermatoses (58%) and drugs (16%). In about eleven percent of the patients exfoliative dermatitis was associated with malignancy. Six out of seven malignancies were foun

[Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome associated with long-term catherter related infection in an adult].

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is an extensive desquamative erythmatous condition caused by the Staphylococcus aureus exfoliative toxin. Although adult cases of SSSS are rare, the mortality rate is high. We report herein on a case of SSSS due to long-term catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by exfoliative toxin B, which produced methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. A 64-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a high fever and generalized exfoliative dermatitis. He had an implanted port vascular access device in his left arm. The port was removed because it

Sjogren's syndrome and drug reaction to practalol.

A case is reported of a patient who developed exfoliative dermatitis while being treated with practalol for angina pectoris. The patient also had trigeminal neuropathy, renal impairment and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The antinuclear factor was diffusely positive but other antibodies were negative. At post mortem the patient was found to have acute pancreatitis, and peritonitis. It is postulated that the patient has antecedent Sjogren's syndrome and on introduction of practalol therapy developed a drug reaction with a generalised exfoliative dermatitis and exacerbation of keratoconjunctivitis

Symmetrical alopecia, scaling and hepatitis in a rabbit.

A 5-year-old rabbit with inappetence, symmetrical alopecia and skin lesions was examined. No mites or Malassezia were found in skin scrapings and tape impressions and dermatophyte culture was negative. Trial therapy with ivermectin did not reduce skin lesion severity, and euthanasia was performed because of anorexia after 1 month. Histopathology of the skin showed hyperkeratosis, lymphocytic exocytosis, cell-poor interface dermatitis (lymphocytic infiltration and apoptotic cells in basal layer of epidermis), absence of sebaceous glands and lymphocytic mural folliculitis comparable to sebaceous

Lack of Suspicion of Dapsone Hypersensitivity Syndrome in a Leprosy Patient: Case Report with Fatal Outcome.

BACKGROUND: Dapsone is an antibiotic used in the management of leprosy. Following the worldwide adoption of the dapsone-containing multidrug therapy for treating leprosy, an upsurge in the reported frequency of dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome (DHS) has been observed. DHS is associated with a high fatality rate among patients from low-resourced settings and patients with syndrome-associated hepatitis. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a Ghanaian male who, while being treated for leprosy with the multidrug therapy, developed exfoliative dermatitis and signs of liver damage, 6 weeks after t

Generalized eruption with severe liver dysfunction associated with occupational exposure to trichloroethylene.

Generalized dermatitis due to trichloroethylene is rare. A 21-year-old printer developed exfoliative dermatitis with mucous membrane involvement, fever and liver dysfunction after a 2-week occupational exposure to trichloroethylene. Positive patch-test reactions to trichloroethylene and to one of its metabolites, trichloroethanol, were observed. This dermatitis is considered to be mediated by a delayed-type hypersensitivity mechanism.
