Influence of digital artery patency on sensory recovery after unilateral digital neurovascular injury.

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the proper palmar digital neurovascular bundles are common surgical emergencies in hand trauma. While nerve repair is known to improve sensory recovery, the benefit of associated digital artery repair remains debated when digital vascularization is preserved. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective comparative single-centre study including patients treated at a European Federation of Hand Emergency Centre for a unilateral injury of the proper palmar digital neurovascular bundle, with a minimum follow-up of 1 year. All patients underwent digital nerve repair with or wit

Experiencing medical desertification: A care-seeker-centered qualitative comparison across rural and urban sites in France and Slovenia.

"Medical desert," referring to conditions of unequal access to medical care, remains contested in its definition and measurement. Predominantly supply-focused, most studies rely on quantitative indicators and few examine how care-seekers perceive and navigate shortages, nor do they address desertification as a dynamic, policy-driven process. None, to our knowledge, compare these experiences across rural and urban settings or countries. We conducted a qualitative comparative investigation during the COVID-19 pandemic among people experiencing health and social vulnerabilities in France and Slov

About differences in the availability of child and adolescent psychiatric hospital beds across Europe and possible implications for mental health care. Are more or less hospital beds the solution to the youth mental health crisis? : Based on a debate at the 21st International Congress of the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Strasbourg, June 30, 2025.

A number of indicators point to a decline in youth mental health globally over the past 15 years. Access to medical treatment and assistance is becoming increasingly difficult as the social divide is widening due to an imbalance between supply and demand. Hospitalization remains a critical yet costly component of child and adolescent mental health care, reserved for the most severe cases. While necessary in some situations, inpatient treatment carries substantial drawbacks, including family separation and social disruption. This paper discusses if increasing hospital beds across Europe can be

Dermal Shift Umbilical Reconstruction: An Innovative and Simple Technique.

Umbilical reconstruction is a procedure with widespread indications in the setting of congenital or postsurgical loss. Reconstruction of the umbilicus when no remnant of the natural umbilicus is present is also called neoumbilicoplasty. Numerous neoumbilicoplasty techniques have been published, including cartilage grafts, full-thickness skin grafts, and multiflap reconstruction. No consensus has been reached regarding an optimal technique, and many procedures involve complicated designs with small flaps that are difficult to reproduce or explain. The authors divide patients into three types de
