Demystifying the New Dilemma of Brain Rot in the Digital Era: A Review.

Background/Objectives: The widespread phenomenon of "brain rot", named the Oxford Word of the Year 2024, refers to the cognitive decline and mental exhaustion experienced by individuals, particularly adolescents and young adults, due to excessive exposure to low-quality online materials, especially on social media. The present study is exploratory and interpretative in nature, aiming to investigate the phenomenon of "brain rot", with a focus on its key pillars, psychological factors, digital behaviors, and the cognitive impact resulting from the overconsumption of low-quality digital content.

Brain rot in the digital age: Sleep loss, circadian disruption, and neurocognitive vulnerability.

The colloquial expression "brain rot" is increasingly used to describe attentional fragmentation, cognitive fatigue, motivational blunting, and a sense of mental "slowness" after prolonged engagement with high-intensity digital media. In this semi-structured narrative review, we use the term as a heuristic bridge concept rather than a formal diagnosis and examine whether sleep and circadian mechanisms provide a biologically coherent account of these complaints. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched through March 2026, with emphasis on chronobiology, sleep deprivation/restriction, digital med

Post-secondary student adoption of mental health labels through their use of social media: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social media is a significant source of information for post-secondary students, who are usually at the age at which many common mental disorders first express themselves. Social media can have a role in the way post-secondary students identify and act on mental health issues. OBJECTIVES: Explore how the use of social media influences post-secondary students' adoption of mental health labels. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We included empirical studies on mental health labelling in the context of social media use among post-secondary students published in English between January 1995 and

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis-Related Messages Across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (Rebranded X): Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Interventions are needed to address the lack of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and mitigate barriers related to PrEP use. One such intervention modality is social media, as PrEP awareness and communication on issues, such as access and cost, are easily addressed via clear social media messages on platforms for PrEP-eligible people, and especially young people, who use social media more frequently. OBJECTIVE: This descriptive study seeks to extend understanding of PrEP awareness and usage by examining PrEP-related communication across 3 popular social media platforms (Fa

Toward a digital sociology of artrepreneurship: understanding artistic entrepreneurship in the platform society.

Artistic entrepreneurship is a rapidly changing field due to the growing dominance of social media. Digital technologies have opened up new avenues for artists to produce, market, and monetize their creative work, and have also remediated the social mechanisms, identities, and structures through which artistic value is created and recognised. Research on social media has so far focused on entrepreneurial, marketing and technological aspects, particularly platform adoption, digital marketing and economic performance. As a result, little attention has been given to understanding artrepreneurship

Shared digital music streaming and parent-adolescent communication: evidence from Turkish Cypriot adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The rapid expansion of online music streaming platforms has transformed adolescents' everyday media practices, making music consumption increasingly individualized, algorithmically curated, and socially networked. While existing scholarship has established the importance of music in adolescent identity formation and emotional regulation, considerably less attention has been devoted to understanding how digitally mediated music listening influences communication within families. As digital-native adolescents increasingly consume music through platforms such as Spotify and YouTube, p

Association between exercise-related social media use and exercise self-efficacy: a PLS-SEM approach.

In the era of digital media, social media has become a crucial platform shaping college students' exercise behaviors. However, the structural pathways linking exercise-related social media use and exercise self-efficacy remain largely unresolved, particularly regarding how external digital interactions translate into internal psychological resources. Integrating social capital and psychological capital within the Social Cognitive Theory framework, this study explores the structural and indirect associations between exercise-related social media use and exercise self-efficacy. Using a cross-sec

A Content Analysis of Xylazine-associated Stigma in Web-based Media Driven by the Zombie Term and Stigmatizing Imagery.

BACKGROUND: Drug use-related stigma amplifies the harms faced by people who use drugs (PWUD). Media often dehumanizes PWUD, particularly those using xylazine, a veterinary sedative and opioid adulterant, by labeling them with terms like "zombie." This perpetuates discrimination and stigma, distracting from the public health crisis. To assess this, we conducted a content analysis to quantify the prevalence of stigmatizing terms like "zombie" and related imagery in xylazine-related web-based media. METHODS: We analyzed web-based news media reporting on xylazine from October 1, 2022, to Septembe

The Dark Side of Flow: Passive Flow State, Metacognitive Bias, and Compulsive Use of Short-Form Videos.

This study examines why short-form videos (SFVs) in social media foster compulsive use by reconceptualizing flow in low-effort digital environments. While prior research has primarily highlighted flow's optimal facets, this study argues that in passive media contexts, flow may also embody maladaptive qualities. Drawing on dual-process theory, SFV engagement is conceptualized as predominantly driven by intuitive processing in System 1 (heuristic processing related), through which flow weakens self-control monitoring of System 2 (systematic processing related). To capture the underlying psycholo
