[A case of pleuropulmonary dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens. Case report].

The differential diagnosis of neoplasms of various localizations is the primary task in clinical practice of all physicians. We present a description of the case of invasion with Dirofilaria repens in the lung of a 68-year-old patient. In 2016 the patient was diagnosed with cancer of the left kidney and underwent a left-sided nephrectomy. During the dynamic observation in 2019, a lump was found in the left lung, which was regarded as a metastasis. An atypical SIX resection of the left lung was performed. Microscopy of the removed lump revealed the presence of a nematode of the genus Dirofilari

Thirteen cases of pulmonary dirofilariasis in a single institution in Okinawa Island.

Pulmonary dirofilariasis is an infection caused by Dirofilaria immitis, which is an endemic parasite in Japan. We experienced 13 surgical cases of pulmonary dirofilariasis in our hospital. Of the 13 patients, 61.5% were men. The responsible lesions were located in the right lung in all cases, and 76.9% of them were in the lower lobe. Histologically, 12 cases showed necrotic nodules with peripheral granuloma with worms inside the pulmonary artery. One case did not show a necrotic nodule but showed only thickening and hyalinization of the pulmonary artery wall with a degenerated worm inside. Eos

Human dirofilariasis in the eyelid caused by Dirofilaria repens: An imported case.

CLINICAL CASE: The case concerns a 33-year-old Ukrainian woman, who came to the Ophthalmology Emergency Service, stating that she had a «worm» under the skin of her upper left eyelid that wriggled at night and bit her. A complete examination revealed a subcutaneous foreign body, which showed a filarial appearance and seemed to crawl under the skin. It was surgically removed to discover a live parasite, PCR-identified as Dirofilaria repens. DISCUSSION: Humans are accidental hosts in the cycle of Dirofilaria. There are only 8 reported cases of subcutaneous infection in Spain. Due to global warm

A rare case of subconjunctival dirofilariasis by Dirofilaria repens in rural Gujarat.

Dirofilariasis is a worldwide zoonotic filariasis with over 782 cases reported so far from different parts of the world. Human dirofilariasis, caused by Dirofilaria repens, have been reported to occur widely throughout Asia, Europe, and Africa. It has not been widely recognized in India, however; several cases have been reported in last few years. There is probably a focus of human infection with D. repens in Kerala. Herein, we present a review of human infections by D. repens, along with a case report of subconjunctival dirofilariasis from rural part of Gujarat.

Intramuscular dirofilariasis mimicking an orbital metastasis in a patient with breast cancer.

We present the unusual case of a 74 year-old female with a history of breast cancer who presented with acute painless orbital swelling and vertical diplopia. MRI revealed a focal enhancing mass within the superior rectus muscle. As the concern for metastatic disease was high, surgical biopsy was performed and revealed an unusual mimicker of metastatic disease, the parasitic infection dirofilariasis.

[Dirofilariasis in the Moscow Region, a low disease transmission risk area].

The spread of canine and human dirofilariasis was first studied in the Moscow Region, a low disease transmission risk area. D.repens infestation was found to have a tendency to increase in Moscow residents with the imported cases being predominant. In 33 (84.6%) districts of the Moscow Region, dogs were registered to have D. immitis and D. repens infestation, with the former being preponderant in 31 districts. An original map of dirofilariasis distribution was compiled with the areas being singled out at a distance of Moscow: 15-20 km (6 districts) (the first ring); as long as 70 km (11 distri

Subcutaneous dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens in Greece: a case report.

Dirofilaria repens (formerly Dirofilaria conjunctiva) is a natural parasite of the subcutaneous tissues of dogs, cats and wild carnivores in Europe, Africa and Asia. Microfilariae are transmitted to humans by various species of mosquito. An autochthonous case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis is reported in a Greek patient from the island of Corfu. The clinical manifestation of the infection was a palpable, painless, subcutaneous nodule in the region of the groin, which 2 days before the patient consulted the doctor developed symptoms and signs of inflammation (pain, edema and redness). The entir

Allergic inflammatory reaction is involved in necrosis of human pulmonary dirofilariasis.

AIMS: To determine whether, in view of the massive inflammatory cell infiltration and the rounded rather than wedge-shaped character of pulmonary lesions in dirofilariasis, the inflammatory response against the worm contributes to the coagulative necrosis, in addition to an ischaemic process. METHODS AND RESULTS: The histopathological features of 13 resected dirofilariasis cases with well-defined nodules ranged from 10 to 30 mm were analysed. On routine histology and using immunohistochemistry, the peripheral encapsulating wall showed mild to severe infiltration of eosinophils, lymphocytes an

[A case of pulmonary dirofilariasis that required differentiation from nontuberculous mycobacteriosis].

A 48-year-old man was admitted with an abnormal shadow on a chest X ray. Chest X ray and CT revealed a solitary nodule in the right lung field. Mycobacterium gordonae was cultured from sputum. Tumorectomy by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was done for histological diagnosis, and Dirofilaria worms accompanied with epithelioid cell granuloma with necrosis were found, while no bacteria were cultured from biopsy specimen, thus we diagnosed dirofilariasis. Because a solitary nodule can be caused by either Dirofilaria species or nontuberculous mycobacteria, this case was of interest with regar

Case of the month. A case report of human pulmonary dirofilariasis in Arkansas.

Our patient, a resident of Arkansas, presented with a solitary pulmonary nodule for lung resection to rule out primary lung cancer. However, pathologic examination showed the lung nodule to be a granuloma secondary to dirofilariasis. Human pulmonary dirofilariasis is a rare zoonotic disease caused by Dirofilariasis immitis (dog heartworm) that is usually transmitted from dogs to human by mosquito bite. To our knowledge, human pulmonary dirofilariasis has previously not been reported in Arkansas. In addition, awareness of this entity in the appropriate clinical and epidemiologic setting is impo

[Pulmonary dirofilariasis resected by video-assisted thoracoscopy; report of a case].

A 35-year-old female was admitted for biopsy of abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. She was operated on for partial wedge resection of the right lower lobe by video-assisted thoracoscopy without complication. Pathological findings in operation showed inflammatory benign tissues and suggested pulmonary dirofilariasis. Serologic examination was negative after operation, however histological diagnosis supported pulmonary dirofilariasis because a pulmonary artery embolism of calcified tissues consisted of non-human cells. There may be many cases due to old infections like this one, so it is important

[Canine dirofilariasis in the canton of Ticino and in the neighboring areas of northern Italy].

The distribution of canine dirofilariosis in Southern Ticino (Switzerland) and in the neighbouring provinces of Varese and Como (Italy) was investigated. Blood samples were collected from 308 dogs which had remained in the local area and were outdoor-housed, older than 1.5 years and had not been treated previously with preventive or microfilaricidal drugs. Microfilariae of Dirofilaria immitis and D. repens were found in 33 (10.7%) and 17 (5.5%) dogs, respectively. Ten more dogs (3.2%) tested positive for circulating antigens. Four infected dogs lived in Southern Ticino: two harboured D. immiti

Pulmonary dirofilariasis: a clinicopathologic study of 41 lesions in 39 patients.

Forty-one cases of pulmonary dirofilariasis in 39 patients are presented. The patients, all Americans, were between 8 and 80 years old (median, 58 years), including 23 men and 16 women. Twenty-two patients were asymptomatic (56%), and the pulmonary nodule was discovered on chest radiographs during a routine physical examination. Seventeen patients (44%) presented with respiratory symptoms or systemic complaints. Peripheral eosinophilia was noted in only 10% of the patients. Radiographically, most lesions were located in the right lung (76%), with a predilection for the lower lobe. In five pati
