Discrimination between Alzheimer dementia and controls by automated analysis of multicenter FDG PET.

A new diagnostic indicator of FDG PET scan abnormality, based on age-adjusted t statistics and an automated voxel-based procedure, is presented and validated in a large data set comprising 110 normal controls and 395 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) that were studied in eight participating centers. The effect of differences in spatial resolution of PET scanners was minimized effectively by filtering and masking. In controls FDG uptake declined significantly with age in anterior cingulate and frontolateral perisylvian cortex. In patients with probable AD decline of FDG uptake in

A Comparative Study of Feature Selection Methods for the Discriminative Analysis of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

It is crucial to differentiate patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) from the healthy population and determine abnormal brain regions in TLE. The cortical features and changes can reveal the unique anatomical patterns of brain regions from structural magnetic resonance (MR) images. In this study, structural MR images from 41 patients with left TLE, 34 patients with right TLE, and 58 normal controls (NC) were acquired, and four kinds of cortical measures, namely cortical thickness, cortical surface area, gray matter volume (GMV), and mean curvature, were explored for discriminative analysi

Task-Related Functional Connectivity Analysis of Emotion Discrimination in a Family Study of Schizophrenia.

Poor emotion recognition is a core deficit in schizophrenia and is associated with poor functional outcome. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) multivariate analysis methods were used to elucidate the neural underpinnings of face and emotion processing associated with both genetic liability and disease-specific effects. Schizophrenia patients, relatives, and controls completed a task that included 4 facial emotion discrimination conditions and an age discrimination condition during fMRI. Three functional networks were derived from the data: the first involved in visual attention and r

Discriminative analysis of multivariate features from structural MRI and diffusion tensor images.

Imaging markers derived from magnetic resonance images, together with machine learning techniques allow for the recognition of unique anatomical patterns and further differentiating Alzheimer's disease (AD) from normal states. T1-based imaging markers, especially volumetric patterns have demonstrated their discriminative potential, however, rely on the tissue abnormalities of gray matter alone. White matter abnormalities and their contribution to AD discrimination have been studied by measuring voxel-based intensities in diffusion tensor images (DTI); however, no systematic study has been done

Geographic discrimination of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis strains by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis.

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of 33 Paracoccidioides brasiliensis strains from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela produced reproducible amplification products which were sufficiently polymorphic to allow differentiation of the strains. Types generated with five primers (OPG 03, OPG 05, OPG 14, OPG 16, and OPG 18) resulted in a high discriminatory index (0.956). The discriminatory index was slightly reduced (0.940) when only two primers (OPG 3 and OPG 14) were used. A dendrogram based on these results showed a high degree of similarity among the strains, and g

Analysis and discrimination of necrosis and apoptosis (programmed cell death) by multiparameter flow cytometry.

Necrosis and apoptosis are two distinct modes of cell death which differ in morphology, mechanism and incidence. Membrane disruptants, respiratory poisons and hypoxia cause ATP depletion, metabolic collapse, cell swelling and rupture leading to inflammation. These are typical features of necrosis. Apoptosis plays a crucial role in embryogenesis and development and is also prevalent in tumours. It is characterised by cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation and systematic DNA cleavage. Apoptotic cells are rapidly engulfed by phagocytes, thus preventing inflammatory reaction to degradative cell co

Genetic analysis of water maze discrimination learning for Mus musculus: polygenes and albinism.

Recombinant inbred strains, their progenitor strains and reciprocal F1 hybrids were given thirty spatial discrimination learning trials in the water maze. The pattern of RI strains in relation to the reciprocal F1 hybrids and the progenitor strains, and differences among strains, suggested that different sets of genes affect the various components of water maze discrimination learning. There was no evidence that the albino gene influenced either inferior or superior performance. Pigmented strains performed as well as, or better than, some albino strains, and albino strain BALB/cBy differed sig

Discriminating analysis of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance of the uterine cervix using nuclear three-dimensional analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The Bethesda System (TBS) of uterine cervical cytology is a classification method that can improve accuracy in management and it includes descriptions on adequate specimens, human papillomavirus (HPV) involvement and estimated lesions. However, the judgment of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) using TBS features complicated diagnostic criteria and poor reproducibility due to the definition of ASC-US. Of patients diagnosed with ASC-US in the initial cytology, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1-2 cases positive for high-risk HPV (CIN+) and benign cas

Discrimination of Steatotic and Non-Steatotic Chemicals Through Transcriptome Analysis in Primary Human Hepatocytes.

Steatosis, characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, is a significant precursor to chronic liver disease and hepatocarcinoma. This condition is influenced by multiple contributing factors such as obesity, alcohol consumption, and exposure to chemicals or drugs. Systems biology approaches including transcriptomics and metabolomics can aid in grouping chemicals according to their mode of action. In this study, we analyze transcriptomic and metabolomic data from primary human and transformed hepatocytes, respectively, to differentiate between steatotic and non-steatotic chemicals.

Integrated Microbiome and Metabolome Analysis for Characterization and Discrimination of Saliva, Semen, Vaginal Secretions, and Their Mixtures.

Body fluid identification (BFID) and estimation of time since deposition (TsD) are valuable yet challenging in forensic practice. Previous studies have demonstrated that integrating microbial and metabolomic profiles provides complementary biological insights. Therefore, this study performed untargeted metabolomic profiling and full-length 16S rRNA sequencing on fresh saliva (SA), semen (SE), vaginal secretions (VF), and their mixtures (SA-VF and SE-VF), with additional microbial analysis after 15 and 30 days of indoor exposure. Results showed the single-fluid samples exhibited specific domina

A fusion strategy of multivariate flavor analysis techniques for the discrimination of aged sauce-flavor Baijiu.

In the present work, effective methods for determining the age of sauce-flavor Baijiu by multivariate data analysis and machine learning techniques were explored. Considering the complex and dynamic flavor changes during Baijiu storage, four analytical techniques, including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), electronic nose (E-nose) and electronic tongue (E-tongue) were integrated, to build a multilayered flavor profile of Baijiu. Four types of classification models were further constructed. The fusion data strategy combined wit
