BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections globally, with Escherichia coli as the predominant uropathogen. The emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing strains has significantly complicated treatment due to widespread multidrug resistance (MDR).
OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in UTIs, describe its demographic distribution, and evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility patterns among isolates from patients at a tertiary care hospital in Imphal, Manipur, India.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global issue currently resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people a year worldwide. Data present in the literature illustrate the emergence of many bacterial species that display resistance to known antibiotics; Acinetobacter spp. are a good example of this. We report here that Acinetobacter radioresistens has a Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenase (Ar-BVMO) with 100% amino acid sequence identity to the ethionamide monooxygenase of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii. Both enzymes are only distantly phylogenetically related to other canonica

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study was to evaluate how ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, and nalidixic acid disks perform in screening fluoroquinolone resistance mechanisms in 278 Escherichia coli isolates collected from a prospective clinical material. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of ciprofloxacin, pefloxacin, and nalidixic acid was performed with the disk diffusion method. PCR-based and sequencing methods were used to detect chromosomal mutations in the gyrA and parC genes and the presence of plasmid-mediated qnr and aac(6')-1b-cr genes. In addition, whole-genome sequencing was used to c

A total of 278 alpha- and nonhemolytic streptococcal isolates (patients, n = 116; healthy adults, n = 162) were examined for susceptibility to 23 and 24 antimicrobial drugs with the Bauer-Kirby agar disk diffusion and the agar dilution method, respectively. Wilkins-Chalgren medium compared favorably with sheep blood Mueller-Hinton agar, the reference medium, for 58 representative streptococcal isolates. In terms of minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), all 278 isolates were susceptible to teicoplanin and vancomycin. None of the isolates revealed high-level gentamicin resistance. All isolat

Enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica is a life-threatening systemic illness of gastrointestinal tract especially in tropical countries. Antimicrobial therapy is generally indicated but resistance towards commonly used antibiotics has limited their therapeutic usefulness. Therefore, we aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern by minimum inhibitory concentration method of common therapeutic regimens against Salmonella enterica from enteric fever clinical cases. Salmonella enterica clinical isolates recovered from the patients with suspected enteric fever whose blood sam

Bacterial biofilms are implicated in a wide range of implant-based and chronic infections. These infections are often associated with adverse therapeutic outcomes, owing to the decreased antibiotic susceptibility of biofilms compared with their planktonic counterparts. This altered biofilm susceptibility has been attributed to multiple factors, including a reduced antibiotic penetration. Although several studies have addressed the role of penetration barrier in biofilm-associated drug resistance, it remains inconclusive. This study was done to elucidate antibiotic penetration through biofilms

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter is a leading cause of foodborne gasteroenteritis worldwide. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Campylobacter spp. is not routinely performed by most clinical laboratories. However, the emergence of resistant isolates strengthens the importance of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the critical need for epidemiologic surveillance. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Etest and Sensititre kit (a broth microdilution method) as methods for susceptibility tests and the critical need for epidemiologic surveillance. The aim of this study was to co

Surfing motility is a novel form of surface adaptation exhibited by the nosocomial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the presence of the glycoprotein mucin, which is found in high abundance at mucosal surfaces, especially those of the lungs of cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis patients. Here, we investigated the adaptive antibiotic resistance of P. aeruginosa under conditions in which surfing occurs compared that in to cells undergoing swimming. P. aeruginosa surfing cells were significantly more resistant to several classes of antibiotics, including aminoglycosides, carbapenems, polymyxins,

INTRODUCTION: There is a mechanism of macrolide resistance in Staphylococcus spp. which also affects the lincosamides and type B streptogramins characterizing the so-called MLSB resistance, whose expression can be constitutive (cMLSB) or inducible (iMLSB) and is encoded mainly by ermA and ermC genes. The cMLSB resistance is easily detected by susceptibility testing used in the laboratory routine, but iMLSB resistance is not. Therapy with clindamycin in cases of infection with isolated iMLSB resistance may fail.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the phenotypic (occurrence of cMLSB and iMLSB phenotype
