Inequities in Access: Public Open Spaces and Physical Activity Disparities Among Brazilian Preschoolers in Vulnerable Communities.

BACKGROUND: Public open spaces (POS) can promote physical activity (PA) in children, but evidence of their role in vulnerable contexts remains limited. This study examines how POS characteristics (distance, quality, and parental perception) influence PA among preschoolers in low-income neighborhoods. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in public preschools in peripheral neighborhoods of a capital city in Northeastern Brazil. Moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) and total PA (TPA) of 128 preschoolers aged 3-5 (56.9% male) were measured using accelerometry. POS accessibility and quality

Does the central nervous system learn to plan bimanual movements based on its expectation of availability of visual feedback?

The correlation between gaze strategy and kinematics of bimanual movements was assessed using repetitive bimanual object transfers as an experimental paradigm. The hypothesis was that visual demand in such tasks is a critical bottleneck in determining bimanual coordination. Kinematics and eye movements were compared before and after practice of this repetitive task. New eye-hand coordination strategies emerged with practice. Also, with practice a systematic prioritization of the left hand movement to be 'primary' and the right hand movement to be 'secondary' emerged. This choice implied that t

Adding insult to injury: neural sensitivity to social exclusion is associated with internalizing symptoms in chronically peer-victimized girls.

Despite evidence documenting activation of the social pain network in response to social rejection and its link to temporary distress, far less is known regarding its role in pervasive emotional difficulties. Moreover, research has not considered the intersection between neural activation to experimentally induced social exclusion and naturally occurring social adversity. This study examined an integrated social pain model of internalizing symptoms, which posits that (i) neural sensitivity in the social pain network is associated with internalizing symptoms, (ii) this linkage is more robust in

Hysteresis effects in a motor task with cotton-top tamarins (Sanguinus oedipus).

The way human adults grasp an object is influenced by their recent history of motor actions. Previously executed grasps are often more likely to reoccur on subsequent grasps. This type of hysteresis effect has been incorporated into cognitive models of motor planning, suggesting that when planning movements, individuals tend to reuse recently used plans rather than generating new plans from scratch. To the best of our knowledge, the phylogenetic roots of this phenomenon have not been investigated. Here, the authors asked whether 6 cotton-top tamarin monkeys (Saguinus oedipus) would demonstrate

Best retinal focus for various fication distances in phakic and aphakic eyes.

When an eye focuses on a distant target, it is often found that the long wavelength rays are focused on the receptors, but when the same eye looks at a target close to the eye, the green or blue rays are in focus in the retinal receptors. The authors investigated this phenomenon by means of a laser optometer to find out whether the shift in focus represented an attempt to reduce accommodative effort, or was used to aid distance judgement, or was simply a by-product of the control mechanisms. Six phakic individuals showed a shift of 50 nm over an accommodation range of 2.75 D. The single aphaki

No evidence of tactile distance anisotropy on the belly.

The perceived distance between two touches has been found to be larger for pairs of stimuli oriented across the width of the body than along the length of the body, for several body parts. Nevertheless, the magnitude of such biases varies from place to place, suggesting systematically different distortions of tactile space across the body. Several recent studies have investigated perceived tactile distance on the belly as an implicit measure of body perception in clinical conditions including anorexia nervosa and obesity. In this study, we investigated whether there is an anisotropy of perceiv

Transcranial Static Magnetic Stimulation Dissociates the Causal Roles of the Parietal Cortex in Spatial and Temporal Processing.

Accurate time estimation is essential for optimizing our perception and actions. Previous neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have suggested that the right inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and supplementary motor area (SMA) are involved in time perception. However, it remains inconclusive whether the activity in these regions is crucial for time perception, partly due to the possible spread of TMS effects across anatomically connected brain regions. Such a remote effect is less likely to happen with transcranial static magnetic stimulation (tSMS), as the static magne

Botulinum toxin for aberrant facial nerve regeneration: double-blind, placebo-controlled trial using subjective endpoints.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant facial nerve regeneration syndrome is systematically studied by constructing a subjective questionnaire organized into pertinent domains (impairment of quality of life, social interactions, perception of self-appearance, visual function, and perception of problem severity) and by physical assessment of degree of involuntary palpebral fissure closure during routine facial movements using videotaping and a physicians' grading scale. METHODS: The videotape measurements of corneal light reflex to upper lid margin distance and vertical palpebral distance were made during adyna

Misconceptions, prejudice and social distance towards people with alcohol use disorders in China.

PURPOSE: Research from Western societies indicates pervasive public stigma against people with alcohol use disorders (AUDs). However, there is a lack of knowledge about the interactions between different components of stigma and their contribution to discriminatory behaviour towards individuals with AUDs within the Chinese cultural context. The aim of the present study was therefore to investigate the relationships of (mis-)conceptions, stereotypes, emotional reactions, perceived public stigma and their contribution to the desire for social distance among the Chinese adults. METHODS: (Mis-)co

Visual-Spatial Influences on Vocal Intensity: Effects of Speaker-to-Listener Distance and Room Size in Immersive Virtual Reality.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of speaker-to-listener distance versus room size on individuals' voice perception and production using immersive virtual reality (IVR). METHOD: Fifteen vocally healthy participants completed three speaking tasks: sustained vowel /a/, the standardized phrase "We were away a year ago," and spontaneous connected speech in nine randomly ordered IVR conditions. Conditions varied in room size, speaker-to-listener distance, and combinations of room size × speaker-to-listener distance. Auditory feedback remained constant across all tria

Preservation of Emmert's law in a visual form agnosic.

Size constancy was investigated in DF, a patient with visual form agnosia, using a technique based on Emmert's law of visual after-images. DF was first given a task in which she was asked to indicate the distance of a vertical surface and a task where she had to estimate the width of a series of squares (widths ranging from 5 cm to 35 cm) placed at varying distances and having a constant visual angle. In the distance estimation task, DF greatly overestimated the distance of the vertical surface placed in front of her. DF also had great difficulty performing the size estimation task. DF then pe

Living in a Genetic World: How Learning About Interethnic Genetic Similarities and Differences Affects Peace and Conflict.

Information about the degree of one's genetic overlap with ethnic outgroups has been emphasized in genocides, is frequently learned about through media reporting, and is increasingly being accessed via personal genetic testing services. However, the consequence of learning about whether your own ethnic group is either genetically related to or genetically distinct from a disliked ethnic group remains unknown. Across four experiments, using diverse samples, measures and contexts, we demonstrate that altering perceptions of genetic overlap between groups in conflict--in this case Arabs and Jews-

Effect of contrast, stimulus density, and viewing distance on multifocal steady-state visual evoked potentials (MSVs).

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of image contrast, stimulus density, and viewing distance upon a multifocal steady-state visual evoked potential (MSV) method. METHODS: Fourteen adults with normal vision (mean age = 27.0 ± 6.6 years; 6 males) participated in the study. Each of the stimulus regions of the multifocal ensembles presented a contrast modulated grating, displaying spatial and temporal frequencies that evoke the spatial frequency doubling illusion. All subjects were tested at five contrasts: 0.06, 0.11, 0.22, 0.45, and 0.89; viewed at 16, 32, and 128 cm. A multivariate linear mo

Is the aligning prism measured with the Mallett unit correlated with fusional vergence reserves?

BACKGROUND: The Mallett Unit is a clinical test designed to detect the fixation disparity that is most likely to occur in the presence of a decompensated heterophoria. It measures the associated phoria, which is the "aligning prism" needed to nullify the subjective disparity. The technique has gained widespread acceptance within professions such as optometry, for investigating suspected cases of decompensating heterophoria; it is, however, rarely used by orthoptists and ophthalmologists. The aim of this study was to investigate whether fusional vergence reserves, measured routinely by both ort

Guttman scale analysis of the distance vision scale.

PURPOSE: The Distance Vision Scale (DVS) is a self-assessment of visual acuity (VA). Like VA testing in which letter reading becomes progressively difficult through the test, DVS questions have a hierarchy of difficulty (Guttman scale). The aims were to determine whether the DVS fulfills Guttman scaling criteria and to test the relationship between DVS score and VA in a cataract population. METHODS: Responses of 113 participants to the DVS were subjected to Guttman analysis. Standard criteria of scalability were evaluated that included the coefficient of reproducibility (CR), minimal marginal

Familial cold-induced transient diplopia.

BACKGROUND: The major precipitants of intermittent diplopia secondary to a phoria breakdown include fatigue and illness. PURPOSE: To describe cold-induced vertical diplopia in a mother and daughter. METHODS: Retrospective report. RESULTS: Mother and daughter both developed vertical diplopia after exposure to cold ambient temperatures. These symptoms remained stable over many years. Ocular motility examination suggested that the diplopia resulted from breakdown of a small vertical phoria. CONCLUSIONS: Familial cold-induced vertical diplopia is a rare disorder of unclear etiology that need n

The line copy task for kinesthesia and internal movement representation: application in children.

In the present study a new test is proposed and tested, which requires ability to use information both from kinesthesia and from mental rotation of previously produced cyclic movements over a distinct trajectory. This Line Copy Test (LICT) was performed by 58 children aged 7-11 years. For the S-part, the participants first had to make movements till they reached a barrier and then they were required to reproduce the same (S) movements without the barrier. For the O-part of the test the participants had to rely on an internal representation of a felt trajectory length, and reproduce the movemen

Clinical performance of a disability glare tester.

A glare tester was described previously and was found, in the presence of cataracts, to be almost twice as predictive as was Snellen measurement for determining visual acuity outdoors. The current study tests the reproducibility of glare test scores and the influence of refractive error and contrast sensitivity on such scores when used in a clinical environment. Although the effects of visual acuity and impaired contrast sensitivity were found to be statistically significant components of glare test scores, the magnitudes of their effects were found to be clinically insignificant.
