Modeling the Neurocircuitry Involved in Binge Drinking.

Binge drinking is characterized by an initial bout of rapid, high-vigor alcohol intake (front-loading) followed by a prolonged period of lower-rate "maintenance" drinking, yet the circuit mechanisms that generate and regulate these phases remain unclear. Here, we develop a systems-level computational model that links the structure of binge drinking to interactions among medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), insula, striatum, and ventral tegmental area (VTA). The model consists of cortical Seek (mPFC) and Go (insula) populations that form a mutually excitatory loop, a SetPoint population that integr

Alcohol Cues Invigorate Aversion-Resistant Alcohol Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is characterized by continued alcohol use despite negative consequences, also known as aversion-resistant drinking. Alcohol related cues can invigorate motivation to seek and consume alcohol. It is currently unknown whether alcohol related cues can invigorate drinking despite negative consequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Long-Evans rats were trained in a discriminative stimulus (DS) task with cues predicting the available of alcohol reward. They were then tested in the task for aversion-resistant drinking by measuring consumption of alcohol adulterated with in

Sports Gambling and Drinking Behaviors Over Time.

IMPORTANCE: Sports gambling has become one of the most accessible forms of gambling in the United States, and recent research suggests that sports gambling coupled with frequent alcohol use may have deleterious health consequences. OBJECTIVE: To examine the trajectories of sports gambling frequency and alcohol-related problems over time and the associations between these trajectories. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study was a 2-year longitudinal study conducted in the United States. Participants were recruited from a nonprobability internet panel from 2 sources: a large cros

Accessing supports due to others' harmful drinking.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol's harm to others (AHTO) refers to harms caused to those other than the drinker. The current paper estimates the prevalence of formal and informal supports sought due to AHTO and examines whether the type of support accessed varies by sociodemographic, economic and harm-related characteristics. METHODS: An Australian sample of 2574 people completed the 2021 AHTO survey, out of which 888 perceived they experienced harm from another's drinking. Prevalence of accessing services and supports was measured. Additionally, several sociodemographic factors, economic factors and ha

Defecation alleviates hangover by terminating intestinal drinking.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of "intestinal drinking" in this study refers to the continued absorption of alcohol in the gastrointestinal tract until adequate defecation occurs. METHODS: A longitudinal observation of hangover symptoms and alcohol metabolites in healthy humans following binge drinking was conducted. RESULTS: The hangover symptoms resulting from binge alcohol consumption were relieved by defecation. Following the defecation process, not only the blood ethanol levels, but also the concentrations of blood acetaldehyde, methanol, and iso-propanol, exhibited significant reductions.

Small-Scale Heterogeneity in Drinking Water Biofilms.

Biofilm heterogeneity has been characterized on various scales for both natural and engineered ecosystems. This heterogeneity has been attributed to spatial differences in environmental factors. Understanding their impact on localized biofilm heterogeneity in building plumbing systems is important for both management and representative sampling strategies. We assessed heterogeneity within the confined engineered ecosystem of a shower hose by high-resolution sampling (200 individual biofilm sections per hose) on varying scales (μm to m). We postulated that a biofilm grown on a single material u

Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women: Drinking for Two?

The primary aim of this cross-sectional survey was to assess the total fluid intake (TFI; sum of drinking water and all other fluids) and the intake of water and all other types of beverages in a sample of pregnant and breastfeeding women representative of Java-Island, Indonesia. Therefore, 299 pregnant and 296 breastfeeding women completed a 7-day fluid-specific record. A secondary aim was to estimate the total water intake (TWI; sum of water from fluids and food moisture), and one 24-h recall was performed to determine water intake from food moisture. The median TFI of pregnant and breastfee

Sex Trading Among Hazardously Drinking Jailed Women.

For women involved in sex trading, both alcohol problems and passage through the criminal justice system are highly prevalent. This study is the first to conduct a focused examination of factors associated with sex trading among hazardously drinking, pretrial, jailed women. Cocaine use, social support for alcohol abstinence, and more days incarcerated in the 90 days leading up to the index incarceration were significantly associated with sex trading involvement among alcoholic women. Helping incarcerated alcoholic women reduce cocaine use and improve sober support networks during and following

Quantification of alcohol drinking patterns in mice.

The use of mice in alcohol research provides an excellent model system for a better understanding of the genetics and neurobiology of alcohol addiction. Almost 60 years ago, alcohol researchers began to test strains of mice for alcohol preference and intake. In particular, various voluntary alcohol drinking paradigms in the home cage were developed. In mouse models of voluntary oral alcohol consumption, animals have concurrent access to water and either one or several concentrated alcohol solutions in their home cages. Although these models have high face validity, many experimental conditions

Bilateral renal cortical necrosis following binge drinking.

Renal cortical necrosis (RCN) is a rare cause of acute kidney injury secondary to ischemic necrosis of the renal cortex. Acute tubular necrosis after binge drinking is usually attributed to volume depletion, idiosyncratic reaction to alcohol, rhabdomyolysis or a combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Binge drinking itself as a cause of RCN has not yet been reported. We report a case of a 25-year-old Asian male who developed bilateral RCN following binge drinking.

'Hotspots' for aggression in licensed drinking venues.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: In order to better understand the social context of barroom aggression, the aim was to identify common locations ('hotspots') for aggression in bars and examine the association of hotspots with aggression severity and environmental characteristics. DESIGN AND METHODS: Aggression hotspots were identified using narrative descriptions and data recorded on premises' floor plans for 1057 incidents of aggression collected in the Safer Bars evaluation. Hierarchical Linear Modelling was used to identify bar-level and night-level characteristics associated with each hotspot. RE

[Acute toxic hepatitis due to drinking water].

Toxic-induced liver disease is uncommon, although the true proportion of cases of hepatotoxicity is unknown, as this entity is underdiagnosed and underreported. The main reasons why toxic-induced liver disease goes unnoticed is the lack of pathognomonic data and the lack of spontaneous reporting by doctors and pharmacists. In some cases, the toxic substance can leave its «signature» in the form of clinical semiology suggestive of an underlying toxic cause. We present a case of hepatotoxicity induced by drinking water (chlorinated), which produced a reactive metabolites syndrome (trihalomethane

[Binge drinking in adolescents and young adults].

Various studies in industrialised European and non-European countries have expressed concern about the link between alcoholic drinks (e. g. alcoholic sodas, so called "alcopops") and binge drinking in adolescents and young adults. Binge drinking has been shown to be associated with considerable social harm and disease burden. Adolescent alcohol abuse including binge drinking is common, but the extent of the problem and the specific risk factors leading to binge drinking behaviour remains unclear. Although the long-term health of adolescent binge drinking has not been studied in detail, first s

Alcohol binge drinking during pregnancy and cryptorchidism.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested gestational weeks 8-14 as a time window of particular importance to the intrauterine development of the male genitalia, and prenatal exposure to alcohol is under suspicion as a risk factor for cryptorchidism. We examined if prenatal exposure to alcohol, and especially binge drinking, during the suggested programming window is associated with an increased risk of cryptorchidism. METHODS: The authors used data on 41 268 live born singleton boys of mothers who were enrolled into the Danish National Birth Cohort in 1996-2002. During early childhood, 1598

Maternal smoking, alcohol drinking, and febrile convulsion.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that maternal cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking during pregnancy may increase risk for febrile convulsion during childhood. We evaluated the relationship of maternal smoking, alcohol drinking, and their interaction on febrile convulsion. METHOD: Pregnant women (n=10,108) enrolled in the Child Health and Development Studies in California between 1959 and 1966 were interviewed about their habits during pregnancy and febrile convulsions of the child were ascertained soon after an event. RESULTS: Febrile convulsions were reported in 2.9% of childr

Jocks, gender, binge drinking, and adolescent violence.

Previous research has suggested a link between athletic involvement and elevated levels of adolescent violence outside the sport context. The present study expanded on this literature by positing differences in the sport-violence relationship across dimensions of athletic involvement (athletic participation vs. jock identity), type of violence (family vs. nonfamily), and gender as well as by examining the impact of binge drinking on the sport-violence relationship. Regression analyses using a sample of 608 Western New York adolescents indicated that (a) jock identity (but not athletic particip
