Hydrogen sulfide: An emerging signaling molecule regulating drought stress response in plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is a small, reactive signaling molecule that is produced within chloroplasts of plant cells as an intermediate in the assimilatory sulfate reduction pathway by the enzyme sulfite reductase. In addition, H2 S is also produced in cytosol and mitochondria by desulfhydration of l-cysteine catalyzed by l-cysteine desulfhydrase (DES1) in the cytosol and from β-cyanoalanine in mitochondria, in a reaction catalyzed by β-cyano-Ala synthase C1 (CAS-C1). H2 S exerts its numerous biological functions by post-translational modification involving oxidation of cysteine residues (RSH)

Evaluation of Silicon and Proline Application on the Oxidative Machinery in Drought-Stressed Sugar Beet.

Drought stress deleteriously affects growth, development and productivity in plants. So, we examined the silicon effect (2 mmol) and proline (10 mmol) individually or the combination (Si + proline) in alleviating the harmful effect of drought on total phenolic compounds, reactive oxygen species (ROS), chlorophyll concentration and antioxidant enzymes as well as yield parameters of drought-stressed sugar beet plants during 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 seasons. Our findings indicated that the root diameter and length (cm), root and shoot fresh weights (g plant-1) as well as root and sugar yield signi

Drought-related cholera outbreaks in Africa and the implications for climate change: a narrative review.

Africa has historically seen several periods of prolonged and extreme droughts across the continent, causing food insecurity, exacerbating social inequity and frequent mortality. A known consequence of droughts and their associated risk factors are infectious disease outbreaks, which are worsened by malnutrition, poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene and population displacement. Cholera is a potential causative agent of such outbreaks. Africa has the highest global cholera burden, several drought-prone regions and high levels of inequity. Despite this, research on cholera and drought in

Sulfur dioxide enhance drought tolerance of wheat seedlings through H2S signaling.

Drought is one of the most common factors that limit plant growth and productivity. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) has recently been found to play a benefical role in protection of plants against environmental stress. In this study, we investigated the effect of SO2 on the physiological and molecular response of wheat seedlings to drought stress. Pretreatment with 10 mg/m3 SO2 significantly increased the survival rate and relative water content (RWC) of wheat seedlings under drought stress, indicating that pre-exposure to appropriate level of SO2 could enhance drought tolerance of plants. These response

The nature of the progression of drought stress drives differential metabolomic responses in Populus deltoides.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of woody crops for Quad-level (approx. 1 × 1018 J) energy production will require marginal agricultural lands that experience recurrent periods of water stress. Populus species have the capacity to increase dehydration tolerance by lowering osmotic potential via osmotic adjustment. The aim of this study was to investigate how the inherent genetic potential of a Populus clone to respond to drought interacts with the nature of the drought to determine the degree of biochemical response. METHODS: A greenhouse drought stress study was conducted on Populus deltoides 'W

Root system response in Argania spinosa plants under drought stress and recovery.

The argane tree is a remarkable essence by its botanical interest and its socioeconomic value. It is endemic species in the southwest of Morocco, where prolonged drought stress may occur. Although its tolerance has been commonly attributed to various mechanisms at the whole plant, the root system has a main role in the whole process of adaptation. We studied in argane tree plants the change in hydraulic conductivity, electrolyte leakage in root as well as root growth under drought stress and recovery. Our findings showed that the root hydraulic conductivity (Lpr) value significantly decreased

Phenolic compounds as indicators of drought resistance in shrubs from Patagonian shrublands (Argentina).

UNLABELLED: Plants exposed to drought stress, as usually occurs in Patagonian shrublands, have developed different strategies to avoid or tolerate the lack of water during their development. Production of phenolic compounds (or polyphenols) is one of the strategies used by some native species of adverse environments to avoid the oxidative damage caused by drought. In the present study the relationship between phenolic compounds content, water availability and oxidative damage were evaluated in two native shrubs: Larrea divaricata (evergreen) and Lycium chilense (deciduous) of Patagonian shrubl

Effects of flooding and drought on water quality in Gulf Coastal Plain streams in Georgia.

Since 1994, water-quality constituents have been measured monthly in three adjacent Coastal Plain watersheds in southwestern Georgia. During 1994, rainfall was 650 mm above annual average and the highest flows on record were observed. From November 1998 through November 2000, 19 months had below average rainfall. Lowest flows on record were observed during the summer of 2000. The watersheds are human-dominated with row-crop agriculture and managed forestlands being the major land uses. However, one watershed (Chickasawhatchee Creek) had 10 to 13% less agriculture and greater wetland area, espe

Responses of stable vegetation to drought accumulation timescales and time lags in the Weihe River Basin.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to distinguish drought accumulation timescale from response timing in stable vegetation in the Weihe River Basin. METHODS: We analyzed MODIS enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and ERA5-Drought standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) data for 2003-2024 on the native 0.25° drought grid. Persistent land-cover classification required at least 18 valid annual classifications and a modal-class fraction of at least 80%. Four accumulation timescales (1, 3, 6, and 12 months) and 13 window-end lags (0-12 months) formed 52 response-exposure combinations. We

Identification of drought-tolerant and stable mung bean genotypes using stress tolerance indices.

BACKGROUND: Mung bean (Vigna radiata L. Wilczek) is an important grain legume increasingly cultivated in water-limited environments. However, strong genotype × environment interaction (GEI) often complicates the identification of broadly adapted and drought-tolerant genotypes. This study integrated multi-environment phenotypic evaluation with molecular characterization to identify superior mung bean genotypes for stressful environments. RESULTS: Nine mung bean genotypes were evaluated under two irrigation regimes across two growing seasons. Environmental effects accounted for more than half o

An explainable and causally informed machine learning framework for hydrological drought transitions, propagation, and vulnerability.

Hydrological droughts (HDs) pose increasing challenges to water-system management, yet the processes governing their wet-dry transitions, propagation delays, and resulting vulnerability remain poorly resolved. Here, we developed an explainable and causally informed machine-learning (ECML) framework to distinguish basin-wide attribution from region-specific relationships and applied it to the monsoon-influenced Yuan-Red River Basin. Meteorological predictors accounted for 63.97% of the total predictive attribution to HD variability, led by precipitation of 36.81%, which exhibited a nonlinear pr

ZmNAC20 positively regulates drought tolerance in maize seedlings via a chromatin-associated network.

The potential yield and establishment of maize are severely restricted by early developmental drought. Although NAC transcription factors are known to control abiotic stress responses, the role of NAC transcription factor 20 (ZmNAC20) in maize drought adaptation remains unclear. We characterized the function of ZmNAC20 in maize seedlings using CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis combined with molecular, physiological, and multi-omics approaches. Loss-of-function zmnac20 mutants displayed increased sensitivity to drought stress, indicating that ZmNAC20 positively regulates drought tolerance in maize seedli

Interactive effects of ozone pollution and atmospheric drought on crop yields: A spatially explicit assessment.

Surface ozone pollution and drought are escalating threats to agroecosystem sustainability, yet their combined impacts on crop production remain poorly quantified, especially under future climate scenarios. Here, we apply an interpretable machine learning framework to assess the nonlinear interactions between ozone exposure, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and other climate variables on U.S. soybean yields from 1981 to 2021. Using two severe drought years (1988 and 2012) as historical analogs reflecting pre- and post-ozone regulation and cultivar improvement contexts, we simulated soybean yield

Physiological and molecular investigation of nanosilica mediated drought tolerance in cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.).

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) is widely recognized as an anticancer and antidiabetic agent. While the effects of drought stress on plants are well documented, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the use of nanosilica as a new strategy to mitigate them. In this study, two Iranian landraces (Isfahan and Semnan) were cultivated and treated with three concentrations of foliar nanosilica (0, 4, and 6 mM nSi) under three levels of drought stress (60, 40, and 20% of field capacity, FC). The treatment significantly improved plant physiological and biochemical responses, with the most pronounced

Calcium-mediated signaling mechanisms enhancing drought tolerance and agronomic resilience in arable crops.

Despite major advances in identifying calcium (Ca2+) signaling components involved in drought-tolerant crops, key challenges remain regarding how Ca2+ signaling interacts with abscisic acid (ABA), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and ion-transport networks. This review synthesized evidence from studies published between 1998 and 2026 on Ca2+-mediated drought tolerance mechanisms in arable crops. Evidence was evaluated from studies on membrane stability and ABA responses to multi-omics investigations of kinase regulation and stress-signaling integration. Studies included cereal (maize, rice, whea

A novel multivariate vine-copula-based drought index with application to high-elevation catchments.

Drought is a complex, slowly evolving hazard governed by multiple interacting hydro-climatic factors, making it difficult to monitor, characterize, and predict. Conventional single-variable indices fail to capture the nonlinear, asymmetric dependence between precipitation and temperature-a limitation that is particularly critical in data-scarce, high-mountain catchments, where incomplete drought characterization undermines the reliability of early-warning systems. To address this, we propose a novel vine-copula-based Multivariate Drought Index (VMDI) that integrates the Standardized Precipitat

Threshold analysis of rainfall and groundwater recharge in mitigating drought risks in overexploited groundwater regions.

This study examines how rainfall and groundwater recharge can help mitigate drought conditions, using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) as the drought indicator. It focuses on the top ten countries experiencing groundwater overexploitation and incorporates a global average perspective to provide deeper insights into these critical relationships. These insights are essential for informed policy-making and integrated decision-making, involving a range of stakeholders from local users to international policymakers on drought mitigation efforts from 1961 to 2022.
