A comparison of morbidity following the removal of lower third molars by the lingual split and surgical bur methods.

Fifty-two consecutive healthy patients with bilateral, similarly impacted mandibular third molars were studied. For each patient, both third molars were removed at the same operation by the same experienced operator. On one side, the lingual split method by chisel was used; on the other, the buccal approach with surgical bur. Standard preoperative and postoperative drug regimens were used. Pain, facial swelling (visual analogue scales), and lingual and labial sensory disturbance were recorded for each side by the patients at home 6, 24, and 48 h and 7 days after surgery. Wound healing was asse

Optogenetics in oral and craniofacial research.

Optogenetics combines optics and genetic engineering to control specific gene expression and biological functions and has the advantages of precise spatiotemporal control, noninvasiveness, and high efficiency. Genetically modified photosensory sensors are engineered into proteins to modulate conformational changes with light stimulation. Therefore, optogenetic techniques can provide new insights into oral biological processes at different levels, ranging from the subcellular and cellular levels to neural circuits and behavioral models. Here, we introduce the origins of optogenetics and highlig

Extraction of impacted mandibular third molars in close proximity to the inferior alveolar canal with coronectomy-miniscrew traction to avoid nerve injury.

OBJECTIVES: Extraction of impacted mandibular third molars (IMTMs) is the most common surgery performed in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is a rare but severe complication, and the risk is significantly higher in cases of IMTM near the inferior alveolar canal (IAC). The existing surgical method to extract such IMTMs is either not safe enough or is time-consuming. A better surgical design is needed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From August 2019 to June 2022, 23 patients underwent IMTM extraction by Dr. Zhao at Nanjing Stomatological Hospital, A

Coronectomy in patients with high risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury diagnosed by computed tomography.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested coronectomy as an alternative procedure to decrease the risk of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury when there are high-risk findings observed on panoramic radiographs. However, the exact relation between the inferior alveolar canal and the roots is not obvious on 2-dimensional imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the success of coronectomy by comparing it with conventional extraction for the treatment of the patients who had clear IAN injury risks that were determined on 3 dimensions by computed tomography. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred
