Measurement of Cognitive and Kinematic Adaptation in Exoskeleton-Assisted Locomotion: Validation of an XR-Based Framework.

Robotic assistive devices, such as exoskeletons, are increasingly employed in walking rehabilitation. Therefore, the measurement of both movement kinematics and cognitive workload is important to understand this human-robot interaction in real-world contexts. To address this need this study presents the validation of a framework integrating inertial motion capture (Xsens) and eye-tracking sensor (Pupil Neon) within a Mixed Reality (Meta Quest 3) architecture. We developed an overground dual-task paradigm in which holographic numbers appear in the user's peripheral vision. This setup actively s

Executive function and social behavior: Causal evidence from loading working memory and inhibitory control.

This article investigates how domain-specific executive functions contribute to perspective-taking and prosocial behavior. Across two preregistered experiments, we independently manipulated working memory (WM) and inhibitory control to assess their effects on social cognition. In Experiment 1 (N = 128), WM load was varied using a dual-task paradigm, and participants completed behavioral and eye-tracking measures of perspective-taking and prosociality. WM load impaired perspective-taking, and this effect was larger under nonsocial than social load. Conversely, individual differences in prosocia

Selection with support: How cross-modal attention shapes smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements can offer a window into the interaction between sensorimotor control and cognition. The present study examined how pursuit might be affected by dual-task demands varying in sensory modality and cross-modal conflict. A second, exploratory aim was to assess whether individual differences in working memory (WM) capacity could moderate these effects. Participants were asked to track a moving target whilst performing mental calculations on visual, auditory, or bimodal digit streams. Pursuit was stabilised when attention was directed to visual input but substantially des

Nature-based and technology-assisted exercise for cognitive and mobility outcomes in older adults: a systematic review of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND: Population aging and rising rates of mild cognitive impairment and mood symptoms have intensified interest in low-cost strategies to preserve brain health and independence. Physical activity is an established protective factor, but adherence to exercise programs remains suboptimal. Emerging work suggests that the exercise environment, including natural settings and immersive or interactive formats, may confer benefits beyond conventional indoor training. METHODS: We systematically searched major electronic databases for randomized trials in older adults that compared nature-based o

The cost of dual-task walking: Cognitive demands restrict gaze behaviour and gait planning.

Adaptive walking relies on proactive gaze behaviour to plan foot placement and maintain stability. This study examined how mental workload and task complexity affect gaze behaviour and gait biomechanics during a precision target-stepping task in healthy young adults. We also quantified the frequency of cross-stepping during the experimental task. Twenty-three participants (18-23 years) walked along an L-shaped pathway containing raised stepping targets under single-task (ST) and dual-task (DT) conditions. Targets had four different layouts to create high and low difficulty conditions. Eye move

Web-Based Gamified Auditory-Cognitive Dual-Task Training for Older Adults With Age-Related Hearing Loss: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Everyday listening ability is essential for individual health and well-being. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is associated with reduced communication engagement, social isolation, loneliness, cognitive decline, and increased dementia risk. Interventions that simultaneously target auditory processing and cognitive function, particularly within engaging and ecologically valid contexts, may offer greater benefits than unimodal approaches. However, culturally adapted, web-based, gamified auditory-cognitive dual-task training (ACDT) tailored for older adults with ARHL remains underexpl

Association of pain sensitization with prefrontal cortex activation and movement patterns during single- and dual-task walking in people with knee osteoarthritis.

Pain sensitization may contribute to heightened prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during walking in people with knee osteoarthritis (OA), especially under cognitively demanding conditions. We examined associations of central and peripheral pain sensitization with PFC activation and walking performance during single- and dual-task walking. Forty-eight individuals with symptomatic knee OA completed single-task walking (STW) and dual-task walking (DTW) with a serial-7 subtraction. Central and peripheral sensitization were indexed by pressure pain threshold (PPT) at the wrist and knee, respectively

Impaired visual reweighting and adaptive postural control in Parkinson's disease: insights from rambling-trembling and stochastic analyses.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is a hallmark of advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and substantially increases fall risk, injury incidence, and loss of functional independence. However, the mechanisms underlying impaired postural control, particularly sensory reweighting and adaptive regulation, remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: To characterize postural control in PD using rambling-trembling decomposition and stabilogram diffusion analysis (SDA), and to examine the effects of visual and cognitive demands as well as their clinical relevance. METHODS: Sixty-four participants (42 PD;

Protocol for a randomized comparison of integrated versus consecutive dual task practice in Parkinson's disease: the DUALITY trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple tasking is an integral part of daily mobility. Patients with Parkinson's disease have dual tasking difficulties due to their combined motor and cognitive deficits. Two contrasting physiotherapy interventions have been proposed to alleviate dual tasking difficulties: either to discourage simultaneous execution of dual tasks (consecutive training); or to practice their concurrent use (integrated training). It is currently unclear which of these training methods should be adopted to achieve safe and consolidated dual task performance in daily life. Therefore, the proposed ran

Dual task interference on postural sway, postural transitions and gait in people with Parkinson's disease and freezing of gait.

Freezing of gait (FoG) is associated with less automatic gait and more impaired cognition, balance and postural transitions compared to people with PD who do not have FoG. However, it is unknown whether dual-task cost during postural sway, postural transitions (such as gait initiation and turning), and gait are more in subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) who have freezing of gait (FoG+) compared to those who do not have FoG (FoG-). Here, we hypothesized that the effects of a cognitive dual task on postural sway, postural transitions and gait would be larger in FoG+ than FoG-. Thirty FoG- an

Devaluation of threat memory using a dual-task intervention does not reduce context renewal of fear.

Many patients who benefit from exposure-based therapy for anxiety disorders fail to maintain their gains. Learned fear may return when they encounter phobic stimuli in a different context than the one in which extinction occurred. In the current pre-registered experiment, we tested whether threat memory devaluation reduces context renewal of fear. A dual-task intervention was used to devalue threat memory. During this intervention, individuals recall the threat memory while simultaneously performing a demanding secondary task (e.g., making eye movements). On day 1, participants (N = 75) underw

Melatonin supplementation as an adjunct to dual-task training: effects on functional capacity and quality of life in Parkinson's disease.

This study assessed the combined effect of 12 weeks melatonin supplementation (5mg/day) and Dual-task training (DTT) on functional capacity and quality of life in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Thirty-six participants were randomised into three groups: DTT + melatonin (TMG, n = 13), DTT + placebo (TPG, n = 11), and placebo (PG, n = 12). During bipedal stance, post-intervention centre-of-pressure mean velocity (CoPVm) was lower in TMG and TPG than in PG under both eyes-opened and eyes-closed conditions. During unipedal stance, CoPVm decreased only in TMG under eyes-closed conditions an
