Epidemiology of subtypes of depression.

OBJECTIVE: There is a general clinical impression that depression differs qualitatively from non-depressive conditions, and that it can be identified as a categorical entity. In contrast, epidemiological studies support the view that depression is dynamic in nature and develops on a continuous scale. The present article reviews selected epidemiological studies of depressive subtypes. METHOD: A selective review. RESULTS: Prior studies have found no clear differences in clinical presentation or long-term outcome between patients with melancholic and with neurotic/reactive depression. In additi

Borderline personality disorder co-morbidity: relationship to the internalizing-externalizing structure of common mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) shows high levels of co-morbidity with an array of psychiatric disorders. The meaning and causes of this co-morbidity are not fully understood. Our objective was to investigate and clarify the complex co-morbidity of BPD by integrating it into the structure of common mental disorders. METHOD: We conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses on diagnostic interview data from a representative US population-based sample of 34 653 civilian, non-institutionalized individuals aged ≥18 years. We modeled the structure of lifetime DSM-IV diagn

Biological studies of dysthymia.

Dysthymic disorder (DD) is a chronic subsyndromal depressive condition that has generated increasing interest since its formal introduction into the psychiatric nomenclature in 1980. Although DD was included among the affective disorders in DSM-III, this classification was controversial. Some clinical and family studies support an association between DD and major depression disorder (MDD), but there has been little additional research firmly establishing the diagnostic validity of DD or clarifying its relation to MDD and to personality disorders. In this article, the literature on the biology

Rethinking ketamine and esketamine action: Are they antidepressants with mood-stabilizing properties?

Ketamine and esketamine, the S-enantiomer of the racemic mixture, have recently generated considerable interest as potential therapeutic agents for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD), a complex disorder that includes various psychopathological dimensions and distinct clinical profiles (e.g., comorbid personality disorder, bipolar spectrum, dysthymic disorder). This perspective article provides a comprehensive overview of the action of ketamine/esketamine from a dimensional point of view, taking into account the high prevalence of bipolarity in TRD and the evidence of the efficacy of these su

[Subthreshold depressive disorders: description and importance for secondary prevention in psychiatry].

"Subsyndromic" or "subthreshold" mood disorders belong to the category of mood disorders. Because newly studied, few informations are available up to date. The Appendix B of the DSM IV introduces six categories of research criteria which characterize these disorders and give us the thread of our study. From Hippocrate to contemporary specialists, many authors reported mild forms of mood disorders, including the Kraepelin or the psychoanalyst authors views. Dysthymic Disorder, Minor Depressive Disorder and Brief Recurrent Depressive Disorder are different categories of subthreshold unipolar dis

Mood Temperaments in Patients With Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Temperamental traits are stable, biologically based personality characteristics that shape an individual's emotional and behavioral responses. While certain traits, in their extreme expressions, may predispose individuals to mood disorders and diabetes-related distress, others may confer resilience and protective benefits. Evaluating the prevalence and patterns of these traits in diabetic patients is therefore essential for a holistic understanding of their psychological profile. This study aimed to assess and compare temperamental characteristics between diabetic patients

What happens to depressed adolescents? A follow-up study into early adulthood.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the mental illness and psychosocial outcomes of adolescents who experienced a depressive disorder and identifies predictors of full remission and recurrence. METHODS: 140 adolescents with major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, or depressive disorder NOS were offered psychosocial and/or antidepressant treatment across two clinical trials. Three to nine years later (mean 5.7 years), 111 adolescents and young adults completed self-, parent- and clinician-reported measures of psychopathology and psychosocial functioning in a naturalistic follow-up study. Comorbidity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): a report from the International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS).

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often associated with significant psychiatric comorbidity. Comorbid disorders include mood and anxiety disorders as well as obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs). This paper aims to investigate comorbidity of DSM Axis I-disorders, including OCSDs, in patients with OCD from 10 centers affiliated with the International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS). METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of comorbidity of Axis I disorders including OCSDs in 457 outpatients with primary OCD (37% male; 63% female), with ag

The correlation of depression with functional activity in Parkinson's disease.

We evaluated 109 Chinese patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in three ways: using a standardized psychiatric interview for depression and anxiety, using standardized neurological evaluation for motor disability, and using cognitive assessment for cognitive impairment. Six of the 109 patients who had dementia and another two afflicted with organic delusional disorder were excluded from further analysis. The remaining 101 PD patients were divided into the following three groups according to the DSM-III-R criteria: major depressive disorder (n = 18), other depressive disorders (n = 25) includi

Lifetime prevalence of specific mental disorders among people born in Iceland in 1931.

The lifetime prevalence rates are presented for mental disorders in a random sample of people born in Iceland in 1931, interviewed at the age of 55-57 years. The diagnoses are made according to DSM-III, on the basis of the National Institute of Mental Health's diagnostic Interview Schedule (NIMH-DIS) used by trained lay interviewers. The most common diagnoses were alcohol abuse and dependence, generalized anxiety disorder, phobic disorders, dysthymic disorder and major depressive episode. Disorders more common in men were antisocial personality, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. Disorders

Distribution of major mental disorders in an US metropolis.

This paper reviews the evolution of psychiatric nosologies in North America and the major epidemiological surveys of Mental Disorders culminating with the recently completed National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area project (NIMH-ECA). The NIMH-ECA examined the prevalence of diagnosable (DSM III) Mental disorders in 5 U.S. communities utilizing a highly structured diagnostic interview, the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Data from the Los Angeles ECA, one of five study sites are presented with particular emphasis on cross-cultural comparison (Mexican Americans versu

Infra-Low-Frequency Neurofeedback Treatment in Dysthymia: A Case Study.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide. Dysthymia, a long-lasting form of depressive disorder that is also known as persistent depressive disorder (PDD) with pure dysthymic syndrome according to the Diagnostical and Statical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), is characterised by being difficult to treat. The most prominent therapeutic approaches in treating dysthymia are pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, but recent studies also demonstrate the success of neurofeedback in treating individuals with depressive disorders. However, infra-low-frequency (ILF) neurofeedback,

Depression in a community-dwelling sample of older adults with late-onset or lifetime epilepsy.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders of late adulthood, yet little research has examined the impact of epilepsy in an older population, particularly in relation to depression. It has been argued that the symptomatology of interictal depression closely resembles that of dysthymia; however, our understanding of depression in older people with epilepsy is generalized from younger populations. This study examined the prevalence and symptomatology of depression, using both self-report and clinical interview, in a community-dwelling group of older adults with epilepsy compared w

Clinical evaluation of the efficacy of pivagabine in the treatment of mood and adjustment disorders.

Depression and distress have in common hypercortisolism, a high turn-over of cerebral monoamines and a wide clinical variability. Results of a clinical open trial with pivagabine (4-[(2,2-dimethyl-1-oxopropyl) amino]butanoic acid, CAS 69542-93-4, Tonerg) on 22 young patients affected by dysthymic disorders and on 38 older patients affected by adjustment disorders following different stressors (mourning, retirement and recovery in institutions of assistance) are reported. Oral treatment with 1800 mg pivagabine lasting 30 days showed in both groups a significant improvement of the psychic state

Do childhood externalizing disorders predict adult depression? A meta-analysis.

Childhood externalizing disorders have been linked to adult affective disorders, although some studies fail to substantiate this finding. Multiple longitudinal cohort studies identifying childhood psychopathology and their association with adult psychiatric illness have been published. To examine the association between childhood externalizing symptoms or disorders and the development of adult depression across cohorts, a meta-analysis was performed. Potential studies were identified using a PubMed search through November 2013. All published, prospective, longitudinal, community-sampled cohort

Anxiety disorders in the joint hypermobility syndrome.

A case-control study was designed to test the association between joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS), an inherited disorder of collagen synthesis, and anxiety and phobic disorders. One hundred fourteen cases of JHS diagnosed at the rheumatology outpatient clinic of the Hospital del Mar (Barcelona) were compared to 59 control subjects randomly selected from patients seen at the same clinic. Both cases and controls were examined by a psychologist who used the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R and who was unaware of their medical diagnoses. Treatment resistant depression.

Despite major research efforts in mood disorders, careful scientific studies and evaluations of "treatment resistant depression" (TRD) are limited. Treatment resistant depression often encompasses several conflicting definitions and concepts: (1) the distinction between 'absolute' TRD and 'relative' TRD is seldom made; (2) the combination of a dysthymic disorder and a major depression ("double depression") can lead to diagnostic confusion when one disorder improves while the similar symptoms of the other persist; and (3) the literature becomes confused when ineffective prophylaxis and ineffect
