Removal of foreign bodies from the proventriculus in a young golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

This paper presents a clinical case report of a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) with foreign bodies (stones) in its proventriculus. The case deals with the identification, management and removal of foreign objects identified in the gastrointestinal tract. A surgical removal by proventriculotomy under general anaesthesia was attempted. The surgery and the recovery were uneventful, and the follow-up after six months revealed no complications. To the best of our knowledge, there are no other reports of successful foreign body removal by proventriculotomy in the golden eagle.

Histopathological Analysis of Elongated Styloid Processes: A New Light on Etiopathogenesis of Eagle's Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness and complications of the use of ureteroscope in the management of ureteral calculi and as diagnostic modality for ureteric strictures and hydroureter. PATIENTS AND METHOD: URS was carried out in 125 consecutive patients. Technical failure to negotiate the ureteric orifice was observed in 10 (8%) patients. Three of them had passive dilatation with ureteric catheter for 48 hours, while in 7, the failures were due to inability to traverse the ureter. This study will thus review 118 patients, 87 males (73.7%) and 31 females (26.3%) with a mean age 38 years +/

Eagle's Syndrome, from clinical presentation to diagnosis and surgical treatment: a case report.

Eagle's syndrome is a condition associated with the elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, clinically characterised by throat and neck pain, radiating into the ear. In this report, we describe the case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with a severe unilateral trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. The patient was subjected to conservative therapy for four months and did not report improvement of the symptoms. After several consultations with different physicians, a diagnosis was accomplished by radiological investigation (multidetector computer t

Eagle syndrome: A case report of stylocarotid syndrome with internal carotid artery dissection.

Eagle syndrome is defined by an elongated styloid process or a calcified stylohyoid ligament that impinges on surrounding structures and causes a variety of symptoms. Classically, Eagle syndrome presents as neck, throat, or ear pain. The vascular variant, stylocarotid syndrome, can present as headache, transient ischemic attack, or stroke. Carotid artery dissection is a rare complication of stylocarotid syndrome. We report a case of stylocarotid syndrome in a 60-year-old man who presented with a right internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection and focal neurological deficits. Computed tomography

Vascular Eagle's Syndrome: Two Cases Illustrating Distinct Mechanisms of Cerebral Ischemia.

We report two cases of Vascular Eagle's Syndrome, which demonstrate two distinct mechanisms of cerebral ischemia. In the first case, hemodynamic transient cerebral ischemia arose as a direct result of compression of the internal carotid artery (ICA). In the second, embolic large left middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction as a result of a thrombus from a pseudoaneurysmal dilatation of the left ICA.

The Macroanatomy of the Sacral Plexus and Its Nerves in Eurasian Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo).

This study was carried out to reveal the formation of the sacral plexus in the Eurasian Eagle Owls (Bubo bubo) and the nerves originating from this plexus. Five EEOs, three of them were male and two were female, were provided from Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center of Kafkas University and used as materials. Following the euthanizing of the animals, abdominal cavity was opened. The nerves of plexus sacrales were dissected and photographed. It was detected that the sacral plexus was formed by the ventral ramus of five synsacral nerves. Moreover, it was determined that the roots of the sa

Transoral endoscopic-assisted styloidectomy: How should Eagle syndrome be managed surgically?

Eagle syndrome, or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament, is a rare condition that may present a clinical diagnostic dilemma for those unfamiliar with its existence and its typical presenting signs and symptoms. Management of this disease process may involve either non-surgical or surgical treatment options. When surgery is indicated, the choice of a specific surgical modality is highly variable and is generally dependent upon individual surgeon preference and experience, since the location of the styloid process is consistent between patients, and the required surgical access is also simil

Unilateral neck pain: a case of Eagle syndrome with associated nontraumatic styloid fracture.

We present a case of Eagle syndrome in a 77-year-old woman with associated aneurysm and nontraumatic styloid process fracture, without history of tonsillectomy, who presented to the emergency department. The first set of symptoms associated with the elongation of the temporal styloid process and/or the calcification of the stylomandibular or stylohyoid ligaments was described by Eagle in 1937. Classically, unilateral pain in the oropharynx radiating to the neck and face that is exacerbated by head turning and neck rotation is characteristic of Eagle syndrome. However, styloid process elongatio

Endoscopy-assisted transoral resection of the styloid process in Eagle's syndrome. Case report.

Eagle's syndrome is often associated with elongated styloid process or ossified stylohyoid or stylomandibular ligament. Patients with this syndrome present with recurrent cervicofacial pain. Surgical removal of the elongated styloid process is a standard treatment and can be accomplished through either a transoral or extraoral approach. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages, and the best surgical approach remains controversial. In our case, the elongated styloid process was removed by transoral approach assisted by endoscopy. Endoscopy provides clear surgical view thus lessen the c

Avian poxvirus infection in a white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) in Japan.

An adult female white-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), over 12 years old, was found moribund and sent to the Wildlife Rescue Center in Kushiro, Japan. Grossly, the bird had multifocal yellow to black nodules in the beak, tongue, mucosa of the oral cavity, eyelids, and legs. Histologically, the cutaneous nodules revealed severe epidermal hyperplasia. The thickened epithelium, from prickle cell layer to horny layer, consisted of swollen keratinocytes containing frequent eosinophilic intra-cytoplasmic inclusions, Bollinger bodies. Ultrastructurally, the epidermal cells had cytoplasmic vir

Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism and osteodystrophia fibrosa in a Hodgson's hawk-eagle (Spizaetus nipalensis).

A Hodgson's hawk-eagle (Spizaetus nipalensis) reared by a falconer showed severe weakness with multiple fractures of bone. It had a history of being fed an all-meat diet. Serological examination revealed a hypocalcaemia (72.0 microg/ml), and hypophosphataemia (29.0 microg/ml). Gross and microscopic examinations demonstrated severe osteodystrophia fibrosa (fibrous osteodystrophy) characterized by osteoclastic bone resorption and intertrabecular fibrosis with unmineralized trabecular bone containing a large amount of unmineralized osteoid. There was also hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the parath

Impact of updated regulatory guidelines on study results in contemporary uncomplicated urinary tract infection clinical trials and implications for trial conduct and drug development: a comparative analysis with EAGLE-2 and EAGLE-3.

AIM: To understand the impact of current regulatory guidance for non-inferiority, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in uncomplicated urinary tract infection (uUTI) on efficacy outcomes. METHODS: EAGLE-2 and EAGLE-3 were phase 3, non-inferiority RCTs of oral gepotidacin (1500 mg twice daily for 5 days) vs nitrofurantoin (100 mg BID for 5 days) in females with uUTI. The composite (clinical and microbiological) primary endpoint, therapeutic response (success or failure), was assessed at test-of-cure (day 10-13) in participants with nitrofurantoin-susceptible uropathogens (≥105 colony forming u

Contaminants of fishes from Great Lakes-influenced sections and above dams of three Michigan rivers: III. Implications for health of bald eagles.

Recently, there have been discussions of the relative merits of passage of fishes around hydroelectric dams on three rivers (Au Sable, Manistee, and Muskegon) in Michigan. A hazard assessment was conducted to determine the potential for adverse effects on bald eagles that could consume such fishes from above and below dams on the three primary rivers. The hazard assessments were verified by comparing the reproductive productivities of eagles nesting in areas where they ate primarily fish from either above or below dams on the three primary rivers, as well as on two additional rivers in Michiga

Mercury speciation in Scottish raptors reveals high proportions of inorganic mercury in Scottish golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos): Potential occurrence of mercury selenide nanoparticles.

Knowledge of the uptake and fate of mercury (Hg) compounds in biota is important in understanding the global cycling of Hg and its transfer pathways through food chains. In this study, we analysed total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in 117 livers of Scottish birds of prey that were found across Scotland and submitted for post-mortem examination through the Raptor Health Scotland project between 2009 and 2019. Statistical comparisons focussed on six species (barn owl, Tyto alba; Eurasian common buzzard, Buteo buteo; golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos; hen harrier, Circus c

Oral gepotidacin versus nitrofurantoin in patients with uncomplicated urinary tract infection (EAGLE-2 and EAGLE-3): two randomised, controlled, double-blind, double-dummy, phase 3, non-inferiority trials.

BACKGROUND: Gepotidacin is a novel, bactericidal, first-in-class triazaacenaphthylene antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA replication by a distinct mechanism of action and a unique binding site, providing well balanced inhibition of two type II topoisomerase enzymes. Oral gepotidacin is under investigation to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of oral gepotidacin with that of nitrofurantoin in adolescent and adult female individuals with uncomplicated urinary tract infections. METHODS: EAGLE-2 and EAGLE-3 were phase 3, randomised, mult

Navigation-Assisted Pure Endoscopic Transoral Styloidectomy for Recurrent Eagle Syndrome: A Pictorial Essay.

BACKGROUND: Complete resection of the styloid process at its skull-base origin is challenging in recurrent Eagle syndrome because of postoperative fibrosis, distorted anatomy, and proximity to the internal carotid artery (ICA). METHODS: Bilateral dissections of two silicone-injected cadaveric heads defined a pure endoscopic transoral trans-medial pterygomandibular corridor to the styloid base. The technique was applied in a patient with recurrent Eagle syndrome after previous transoral styloid shortening. RESULTS: Cadaveric dissections demonstrated a reproducible route to the styloid base th

Pearls & Oy-sters: Eagle Syndrome in a Patient With Neurologic Deficit Upon Head Rotation.

Transient neurologic symptoms are a commonly observed problem within neurology. It is less typical for these symptoms to be triggered by a certain movement. This case describes a 57-year-old man with a history of hypertension who presented for evaluation of posture-dependent left-sided weakness. After extensive examination, the patient was found to have an elongated styloid process causing symptoms. After surgical removal of the elongated styloid process, the patient was completely symptom-free. This report describes the diagnosis of Eagle syndrome including key diagnostic tools. Eagle syndrom
