Kaposi disease (KD) is an angiogenetic tumor process, characterized by its various clinical aspects. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial and it was attributed to HHV-8 infection. We report an original case of disseminated KD revealed by solitary lesion of external ear in a patient treated by corticosteroids for bullous pemphigoid.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Melanin is a pigmented polymer with a known role in dermal solar protection. In vertebrates, melanogenesis has been reported in leukocyte populations, suggesting a potential role in innate immunity. In this study, we report the novel finding of melanin associated with chronic inflammation and speculate on its potential role in the middle ear and mastoid.

Entire books have been written on the subject of canine ear disease. Rather than attempt to present all the available information here, I am providing an overview of how I diagnose and manage ear disease in dogs. It is critical to appreciate that ear disease is only a clinical problem (no more specific than pruritus) and that steps must be taken to prevent otitis externa from progressing to proliferative otitis. BOX 1 summarizes step-by-step approaches to specific clinical scenarios.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of chronic inflammatory middle ear disease on gustatory function of chorda tympani nerve.
METHODS: A prospective study was performed on 85 patients having unilateral chronic inflammatory middle ear disease of either cholesteatomatous or noncholesteatomatous type. Gustatory assessment on both sides of the tongue was performed using dry taste strips.

OBJECTIVE: Ménière's disease in an only hearing ear is rare. Our objective is to define the current practice patterns for this problem.
SUBJECTS: Clinically active members of the American Otological Society and the American Neurotology Society.

Disease that lies in the posterior mesotympanum, including inflammatory polyps, cholesterol granuloma, and cholesteatoma, is often difficult to extirpate. The literature reflects a divided and often controversial opinion regarding the removal of the bony posterior canal wall to reach this disease. The population screened for mental retardation consisted of 12,882 children, 8 years old. One hundred and fifty-one mentally retarded children were clinically studied. No borderline case was included. One hundred and one children were randomly chosen to form a control group. On clinical examination the children were 9-10 years old. Tympanograms were obtained from 206 children (81.8%). The function of the Eustachian tube was tested preoperatively by sonotubometry in 100 ears subjected to surgery for chronic ear disease. 36 ears showed no tubal passage for sound during swallowing and the surgical intervention revealed cholesteatoma in 17 of these cases.
