Longitudinal Exploration of Productivity and Well-being in Hybrid Work Through Ecological Momentary Assessment and Environmental Sensing.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how hybrid workspaces (home vs. office) affect productivity and well-being, and whether indoor environmental quality (IEQ) mediates these associations. METHODS: Nineteen office workers were followed for four months, contributing 4,559 ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) of productivity, mood, stress, and eustress-distress appraisal. Continuous IEQ monitoring captured CO₂, TVOCs, PM₂.₅, temperature, humidity, and noise. Mixed-effects and multilevel mediation models assessed within-person associations. RESULTS: Office work was associated with higher productivity and g

Advancing models of PTSD-AUD comorbidity: protocol for a multimethod framework using genetics and ecological momentary assessment.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD), which are moderately heritable, frequently co-occur and contribute to significant public health burdens, particularly among economically disadvantaged urban communities. There are noted sex differences in PTSD and AUD outcomes, with evidence suggesting women have heightened susceptibility to stress-related alcohol use. Preliminary PTSD-AUD ecological momentary assessment (EMA) findings support bidirectional associations across clinical outcomes. However, no studies to date have used PTSD-AUD comorbidity models as

Safety behaviors maintain persecutory ideation in individuals with psychotic disorders: evidence from an ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Safety behaviors are a common response to persecutory ideation in psychosis. They potentially contribute to the maintenance and exacerbation of symptoms and emotional distress and are therefore a promising treatment target. However, empirical evidence for this hypothesized maintenance role is scarce. We therefore examined cross-sectional and micro-longitudinal associations between safety behaviors, negative affect, and persecutory ideation in the daily lives of individuals with psychotic disorders. METHODS: We assessed safety behaviors, persecutory ideation, and negative affect at

Psychobiological stress and premenstrual symptoms across the menstrual cycle: protocol for an ecological momentary assessment (ISSAC) study.

INTRODUCTION: Premenstrual symptoms occur on a continuum from mild experiences to clinically significant, menstrual cycle-related mood disorders, including premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Stress has been implicated as a key pathophysiological factor, yet the temporal coupling and dynamics between psychobiological stress patterns and premenstrual symptom expression across the menstrual cycle remain poorly characterised. The Interactions between premenstrual Symptoms and Stress Across the menstrual Cycle (ISSAC) study investigates how daily and momentary stress relates to premenstrual sy

Dissociation as a marker of emotion dysregulation: An examination in adolescent psychiatric inpatients using ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Dissociation is a transdiagnostic symptom and hypothesized to serve as a short-term regulatory mechanism in response to emotional stress. The present study examined the momentary dynamics between dissociation, negative affect, and cortisol in the day-to-day lives of adolescent psychiatric inpatients. METHODS: Forty-eight adolescents (mean age: 15.85 years, SD: 1.15, 81% female) were recruited from psychiatric inpatient units. Following a diagnostic baseline assessment, participants completed twelve signal-contingent ecological momentary assessments per day over five consecutive da

Dynamic changes in metacognitive mechanisms and symptoms during the attention training technique: Insights from ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are prevalent and associated with substantial distress and impairment. Within the metacognitive model of emotional disorders, the cognitive attentional syndrome (CAS) and associated metacognitions maintain anxiety. The Attention Training Technique (ATT) targets the CAS and related metacognitions. However, less is known about how symptoms and metacognitive mechanisms evolve across treatment phases. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore temporal dynamics in emotional symptoms and metacognitive mechanisms during group ATT by estimating mean levels, variability, and

Repetitive negative thinking mediates the relationship between self-esteem and burnout in an ecological momentary assessment study.

Low self-esteem and repetitive negative thinking are associated with higher burnout risk among university students at the between-person level. However, there is increasing evidence that associations identified in between-person analyses do not always reflect processes occurring within individuals. Therefore, we conducted a four-week ecological momentary assessment study with N = 96 students during an examination period. Results showed that higher self-esteem was followed by feeling less burnt out on a within-day and day-to-day level. Also, higher self-esteem was followed by lower repetitive n

Smartwatch-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment for High-Temporal-Density, Longitudinal Measurement of Alcohol Use (AlcoWatch): Feasibility Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment methods have recently been adapted for use on smartwatches. One particular class of these methods, developed to minimize participant burden and maximize engagement and compliance, is referred to as microinteraction-based ecological momentary assessment (μEMA). OBJECTIVE: This study explores the feasibility of using these smartwatch-based μEMA methods to capture longitudinal, high-temporal-density self-report data about alcohol consumption in a nonclinical population selected to represent high- and low-socioeconomic position (SEP) groups. METHODS: A

Family history of bruxism: a case-control study based on the ecological momentary assessment of awake bruxism.

BACKGROUND: In everyday clinical practice, the screening of specific genes for awake bruxism (AB) is not a sustainable and feasible practice; most of the time, the only information that clinicians can rely on is investigating the family history of bruxism. Nevertheless, little is known about the relationship between the reported history and AB frequency. The aim of the present paper is to assess the existence of any differences in the frequency of self-reported AB behaviors between healthy young individuals with and without a positive report of family history of bruxism. METHODS: Participants

Ecological momentary assessment study of same-hour polysubstance use among people who use opioids and additional substances.

BACKGROUND: Polysubstance use is a defining feature of the opioid overdose epidemic in the United States today. Most quantitative studies of polysubstance use rely on 30-day retrospective measures. Understanding how drugs are co-used in shorter (daily and hourly) timeframes enhances our understanding of polysubstance-related overdose risk. METHODS: We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to assess polysubstance in community-based sample of people who use drugs in Oakland, CA (N = 117). Participants provided data on substance use three times daily over 28 days, using a smartphone app. We

Associations between wearables vital parameters and self-perceived mood-an ecological momentary assessment study among healthy adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental illnesses among adolescents has increased over the past decade. Lifestyle factors, such as regular exercise or sleep behavior can play a significant role in the prevalence of mental health. Today, passive mobile sensing or smartwatches offer valuable insights into the relationships between device-derived vital parameters (e.g., steps, exercise, sleep, heart rate) and self-reported mental health indicators, such as mood. However, the link between vital parameters and self-reported mood in daily life among adolescents remains understudied. METHODS: A total o

Associations of social and cognitive-behavioral variables with disinhibited eating and anxiety: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Among adolescents, disinhibited eating and anxiety commonly co-occur. Precision intervention approaches targeting unique mechanistic vulnerabilities that contribute to disinhibited eating and anxiety may therefore be helpful. However, the effectiveness of such interventions hinges on knowledge of between- and within-person associations related to disinhibited eating, anxiety, and related processes. METHOD: A sample of 39 adolescent females (12-17 years) with elevated anxiety and above-average weight (BMI %ile ≥ 75th) completed measures of theoretically driven social and cognitive-b

Ecological momentary assessment of the unique effects of trait worry on daily negative emotionality: does arousal matter?

Worry proneness is a transdiagnostic trait that predicts increased negative affect (NA), potentially in the service of preventing negative emotional contrasts. Although discrete types of NA vary along the dimension of arousal, the extent to which trait worry predicts high vs. low arousal forms of NA in daily life is unclear. This distinction has important implications for conceptualising how worry may perturb adaptive emotionality in various disorders. The present study (not pre-registered) aimed to isolate the effects of trait worry on high (N = 88) and low (N = 122) arousal NA in daily life

State-level working memory and dysregulated eating in children and adolescents: An exploratory ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Children with loss of control (LOC) eating and overweight/obesity have relative deficiencies in trait-level working memory (WM), which may limit adaptive responding to intra- and extra-personal cues related to eating. Understanding of how WM performance relates to eating behavior in real-time is currently limited. METHODS: We studied 32 youth (ages 10-17 years) with LOC eating and overweight/obesity (LOC-OW; n = 9), overweight/obesity only (OW; n = 16), and non-overweight status (NW; n = 7). Youth completed spatial and numerical WM tasks requiring varying degrees of cognitive effo

Using Smartphone Sensor Paradata and Personalized Machine Learning Models to Infer Participants' Well-being: Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Sensors embedded in smartphones allow for the passive momentary quantification of people's states in the context of their daily lives in real time. Such data could be useful for alleviating the burden of ecological momentary assessments and increasing utility in clinical assessments. Despite existing research on using passive sensor data to assess participants' moment-to-moment states and activity levels, only limited research has investigated temporally linking sensor assessment and self-reported assessment to further integrate the 2 methodologies. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whet

Effects of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) induced monitoring on tinnitus experience: A multiple-baseline single-case experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a method capable of assessing tinnitus experience throughout the day, enabling the exploration of daily dynamic changes of tinnitus expression. However, the effects on patients' tinnitus experience itself are still largely unknown. This study seeks to test the hypothesis that the use of EMA negatively influences tinnitus experience in participants with severe tinnitus. METHOD: A multiple-baseline single-case experimental design included four severely affected tinnitus volunteers who were recruited online and randomized into different phas

A Mixed Model to Disentangle Variance and Serial Autocorrelation in Affective Instability Using Ecological Momentary Assessment Data.

Affective instability, the tendency to experience emotions that fluctuate frequently and intensively over time, is a core feature of several mental disorders including borderline personality disorder. Currently, affect is often measured with Ecological Momentary Assessment protocols, which yield the possibility to quantify the instability of affect over time. A number of linear mixed models are proposed to examine (diagnostic) group differences in affective instability. The models contribute to the existing literature by estimating simultaneously both the variance and serial dependency compone

Prospective Mediation Models of Sleep, Pain, and Daily Function in Children With Arthritis Using Ecological Momentary Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep is an emerging area of concern in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Research shows the presence of poor sleep quality and related adverse outcomes in pediatric pain populations, including JIA, but few studies have examined the prospective patterns of association between sleep and associated outcomes. This prospective study evaluated the direction and magnitude of associations between subjective sleep characteristics (sleep quality, difficulty initiating sleep, and sleep duration), pain intensity, and functional limitations in children with JIA. We hypothesize
