Sex differences in the social motivation of rats: Insights from social operant conditioning, behavioural economics, and video tracking.

BACKGROUND: Social behaviour plays a key role in mental health and wellbeing, and developing greater understanding of mechanisms underlying social interaction-particularly social motivation-holds substantial transdiagnostic impact. Common rodent behavioural assays used to assess social behaviour are limited in their assessment of social motivation, whereas the social operant conditioning model can provide unique and valuable insights into social motivation. Further characterisation of common experimental parameters that may influence social motivation within the social operant model, as well a

Regret, uncertainty, and bounded rationality in norm-driven decisions.

This study introduces an agent-based model to examine how regret, uncertainty, and social norms interact to shape vaccination behavior during epidemics. The model integrates three behavioral mechanisms-anticipated regret, evolving norms, and uncertainty-dependent trust-within a unified learning framework. Grounded in psychology and behavioral economics, it captures how individuals make probabilistic choices influenced by material payoffs, fear, trust, and social approval. Simulations of the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered process show that choice precision has context-dependent effects. In the

Shifted risk preferences in pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) is an impulse control disorder characterized by excessive monetary risk seeking in the face of negative consequences. We used tools from the field of behavioral economics to refine our description of risk-taking behavior in pathological gamblers. This theoretical framework allowed us to confront two hypotheses: (1) pathological gamblers distort winning probabilities more than controls; and (2) pathological gamblers merely overweight the whole probability range. Method Eighteen pathological gamblers and 20 matched healthy participants performed a decision-

Electronic patient-reported outcomes as digital therapeutics for patients with cancer: a narrative review of current practices and future directions.

Improved cancer treatment outcomes have increased the demand for medical care that considers the quality of life of patients with cancer. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) help assess the quality of life because they involve direct evaluation of the patients. Recently, electronic PROs (ePROs) have been used in clinical cancer care settings in Europe and the United States. Electronic PROs positively affected communication between patients with cancer and healthcare providers, enhanced education, optimized self-management, contributed to healthcare economics, assisted in monitoring adverse events

Diminishing parochialism in intergroup conflict by disrupting the right temporo-parietal junction.

Individuals react to violation of social norms by outgroup members differently than to transgressions of those same norms by ingroup members: namely outgroup perpetrators are punished much more harshly than ingroup perpetrators. This parochial punishment pattern has been observed and extensively studied in social psychology and behavioral economics. Despite progress in recent years, however, little is known about the neural underpinnings of this intergroup bias. Here, we demonstrate by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) that the transient disruption of the right, but not the left

Assessing influential dimensions of reinforcers on choice in students with serious emotional disturbance.

We examined how reinforcer rate, quality, delay, and response effort combined to influence the choices of 6 youths with learning and behavior difficulties, and the viability of an assessment methodology derived from matching theory for determining differential responsiveness to those reinforcer and response dimensions. The students were given two concurrent sets of math problems that were equal on two dimensions but competed on two other dimensions (e.g., one set yielded higher rate and lower quality reinforcement than the other). Competing dimensions were counterbalanced across the six condit

Ecological variation in self-injury behavior.

Only recently have efforts been made to discover the extent of self-injury behavior in the general population. The study reported here was designed to ascertain and examine the degree of relationship between the ecological distribution of self-injury behavior and the indices of economic and ethnic status. The general hypothesis predicts that high rates of self-injury behavior are associated with low economic status and high ethnic status census tract populations in a northern metropolitan area. A total of 2,755 cases of self-injury were collected for the year 1972 from the records of the city

The business cycle, health behavior, and chronic disease: A study over Three decades.

The effect of macroeconomic fluctuations on individual health remains highly debated. We estimate the effect of the business cycle on health and health behavior in the U.S. using the NLSY79 panel data for 11,406 respondents between 1979 and 2014. Most of our survey respondents have no chronic illness in 1979, and develop these conditions during the sample period. This allows us to estimate the true effect of economic fluctuation on the likelihood of developing chronic conditions. The results indicate a considerable difference in the cyclic variation of chronic diseases. After controlling for i

Sensitivity of joint contagiousness and susceptibility-based dynamic optimal control strategies for HIV prevention.

Predicting the population-level effects of an infectious disease intervention that incorporate multiple modes of intervention is complicated by the joint non-linear dynamics of both infection transmission and the intervention itself. In this paper, we consider the sensitivity of Dynamic Optimal Control Profiles (DOCPs) for the optimal joint investment in both a contagiousness and susceptibility-based control of HIV to bio-behavioral, economic, and programmatic assumptions. The DOCP is calculated using recently developed numerical algorithms that allow controls to be represented by a set of pie

Distinguishing between gaming and gambling activities in addiction research.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling and gaming activities have become increasingly recognised as sharing many common features at a structural and aesthetic level. Both have also been implicated as contributing to harm through excessive involvement. Despite this, relatively little attention has been given to the fundamental characteristics that differentiate these two classes of activity, especially in situations where the boundaries between them may be particularly hard to distinguish. This is evident, for example, in digital games that incorporate free and paid virtual currencies or items, as well

Subjective Values in Decision-Making Under Uncertainty: A Systematic Review.

Decision-making under uncertainty, risk, and ambiguity is a central topic in behavioral sciences, yet the cognitive and neural mechanisms through which individuals construct subjective value remain fragmented across disciplines. Neuroeconomics has emerged as an interdisciplinary field integrating psychology, economics, and neuroscience to explain how subjective value guides judgment and choice under uncertain conditions. However, the conceptual foundations of subjective value and its role across different forms of uncertainty remain insufficiently integrated. This study provides the first comp

Health care's new behemoths.

Merger mania has been sweeping the insurance industry for years; what's raising eyebrows these days is the sheer pace of consolidation and the startling size of the plans being created. What are the implications of these megaplans for hospitals and for health care in general? As their clout in the marketplace increases, so does the scrutiny they're coming under.

Measuring economic outcomes of alcohol treatment using the Economic Form 90.

OBJECTIVE: This article assesses the ability of the economic outcome measures in the Economic Form 90 to detect differences across levels of alcohol dependence as measured by the Alcohol Dependence Scale. METHOD: We used baseline data from the Combining Medications and Behavioral Interventions (COMBINE) Study, a large, multisite clinical trial, to assess the extent to which the economic items on the Economic Form 90 instrument can detect differences across levels of alcohol dependence. RESULTS: After adjusting for differences in demographic characteristics, the Economic Form 90 can detect si

App-Based Digital Therapeutics Integrating Continuous Glucose Monitoring for Glycemic Control in Type 2 Diabetes: Prospective Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital therapeutics integrating continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) with personalized lifestyle coaching can enhance glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, real-world evidence evaluating such multicomponent interventions-combining CGM with nutrition coaching, physiotherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy within a unified digital platform-remains limited in South Asian populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an app-based lifestyle-integrated intervention program (Glycemic Lifestyle Intervention in Diabetes

Economic valuation of psychological processes: Examining healthcare decision-making in chronic disease management.

This paper examines how economic valuation - an economic process - is influenced by individual differences in goals - a psychological process. Specifically, we demonstrate how to estimate economic value in the context of health behaviors by incorporating psychological variations in goal priorities. The study is motivated by the need to better understand how healthcare interventions shape individual behaviors, particularly in the management of chronic conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The primary contribution of this paper is conceptual, introducing a model that integrates economic and p

An alternative strategy for balancing profit maximization and risk reduction.

Portfolio diversification is a central theme in modern investment theory. We revisit the classic return-risk trade-off and propose an alternative objective [Formula: see text] that balances higher expected returns with a direct penalty on portfolio volatility via the inverse standard deviation. This objective belongs to the axiomatic class of mean-variance preferences (as formalised by [1] for additively separable forms) and admits tractable solutions, including a closed-form characterisation in the two-asset case. In rolling out-of-sample backtests on standard Fama-French equity portfolios wi

Childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury among Chinese college students: The moderating roles of social phobia and perceived family economic status.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury is a heavy burden on affected college students with rippling effects throughout their lives. Childhood maltreatment is strongly associated with non-suicidal self-injury among college students. However, it remains unclear whether perceived family economic status and social phobia exert significant moderating effects on the relationship between childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the perceived family economic status and social phobia moderating the association between childhood maltreatment and non-sui

Change in alcohol demand following a brief intervention predicts change in alcohol use: A latent growth curve analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association between behavioral economic demand and various alcohol use outcomes is well established. However, few studies have examined whether changes in demand occur following a brief alcohol intervention (BAI), and whether this change predicts alcohol outcomes over the long term. METHODS: Parallel process piecewise latent growth curve models were examined in a sample of 393 heavy drinking emerging adults (60.8% women; 85.2% white; Mage  = 18.77). In these models, two linear slopes represented rates of change in alcohol use, heavy drinking episodes, alcohol-related problems,

Decision making in the short and long run: repeated gambles and rationality.

Experimental evidence indicates that decision makers who reject a single play of a gamble may accept repeated plays of that gamble. The rationality of this pattern of preference has been investigated beginning with Samuelson's colleague (SC) who gained notoriety in a well-known paper. SC's pattern of preference is commonly viewed as a behavioural anomaly. Researchers from branches of psychology and economics have analysed the choice and, despite much debate, there remains considerable confusion. An axiomatic analysis of SC's choice has been used to motivate experimental studies in several disc
