Current scenario of malaria in India.

The Indian National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP) is reporting 2.5 to 3 million malaria cases, and about 1,000 malaria deaths annually. Malaria in the northeastern states is stable and in the peninsular India unstable. There are six major and three minor malaria vectors, of which Anopheles culicifacies transmits malaria in rural areas and An. stephensi in the towns. Other vectors are of local importance. Plasmodium vivax is the dominant infection and accounts for 60-65% cases whereas P. falciparum contributes 30-35% cases. Field operations to control malaria are impeded by resistance an

Culturable microbiota of reared mosquito fauna in Osogbo, Nigeria and their potential biological roles: a molecular insight.

OBJECTIVE: Mosquitoes are vectors of deadly, life-threatening diseases worldwide. There is limited information on the interactions between microbes and local mosquito fauna in the Nigerian ecotype and Osun State. This study employed molecular techniques to characterize microorganisms isolated from the internal tissues of adult mosquitoes reared from larvae and pupae collected from various breeding sites in the Osogbo metropolis, Nigeria. Bacteria and yeasts were isolated from immobilized, surface-sterilized, and homogenized mosquitoes. Molecular identification of microbes was based on the Poly

Detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia aktasi in a wild bezoar goat (Capra aegagrus): Overlap with domestic goat strains.

This study reports the first detection of Babesia aktasi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in a bezoar goat (Capra aegagrus), providing insight into the presence of these pathogens in wild caprinae. The infected goat exhibited a localised ocular infection but showed no clinical signs of acute piroplasmid or Anaplasma infections. Microscopic examination of blood smears revealed low parasitemia of intra- and extraerythrocytic piroplasms and intragranulocytic morulae, consistent with chronic infection. PCR and sequence analysis confirmed that the Babesia species detected was B. aktasi, a recently des

Glutathione regulates transcriptional activation of iron transporters via S-nitrosylation of bHLH factors to modulate subcellular iron homoeostasis.

Glutathione (GSH) is known to regulate iron (Fe) deficiency response in plants but its involvement in modulating subcellular Fe homoeostasis remains elusive. In this study, we report that the GSH-deficient mutants, cad2-1 and pad2-1 displayed increased sensitivity to Fe deficiency with significant downregulation of the vacuolar Fe exporters, AtNRAMP3 and AtNRAMP4, and the chloroplast Fe importer, AtPIC1. Moreover, the pad2-1 mutant accumulated higher Fe levels in vacuoles but lower Fe levels in chloroplasts compared to wild type (Columbia ecotype [Col-0]) under Fe limited conditions. Exogenous

Impact of the sickle mutant and temperature on the structure of transcripts and RNAs from Arabidopsis thaliana.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this data set was to identify how interaction between temperature and the sickle-3 (sic-3) mutant alters the global messenger RNA (mRNA) content of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings. The motivation was discovery of atypical mRNA splice variants in sic-3 that differed with seedling growth temperature. The expected outcome was identification of mRNA splice variants altered by sic-3, temperature, or the combination of temperature and genotype. DATA DESCRIPTION: The data set is RNAseq profiling of Arabidopsis (Col-0 ecotype) wild type and sic-3 seedlings under 16 °C or 2

Cucumber Mosaic Virus-Induced Systemic Necrosis in Arabidopsis thaliana: Determinants and Role in Plant Defense.

Effector-triggered immunity (ETI) is one of the most studied mechanisms of plant resistance to viruses. During ETI, viral proteins are recognized by specific plant R proteins, which most often trigger a hypersensitive response (HR) involving programmed cell death (PCD) and a restriction of infection in the initially infected sites. However, in some plant-virus interactions, ETI leads to a response in which PCD and virus multiplication are not restricted to the entry sites and spread throughout the plant, leading to systemic necrosis. The host and virus genetic determinants, and the consequence

Female Choice Undermines the Emergence of Strong Sexual Isolation between Locally Adapted Populations of Atlantic Mollies (Poecilia mexicana).

Divergent selection between ecologically dissimilar habitats promotes local adaptation, which can lead to reproductive isolation (RI). Populations in the Poecilia mexicana species complex have independently adapted to toxic hydrogen sulfide and show varying degrees of RI. Here, we examined the variation in the mate choice component of prezygotic RI. Mate choice tests across drainages (with stimulus males from another drainage) suggest that specific features of the males coupled with a general female preference for yellow color patterns explain the observed variation. Analyses of male body colo

Evidence for an African cluster of human head and body lice with variable colors and interbreeding of lice between continents.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Human head lice and body lice have been classified based on phenotypic characteristics, including geographical source, ecotype (preferred egg laying site hair or clothes), shape and color. More recently, genotypic studies have been based on mitochondrial genes, nuclear genes and intergenic spacers. Mitochondrial genetic analysis reclassified lice into three genotypes (A, B and C). However, no previous study has attempted to correlate both genotypic and phenotypic data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lice were collected in four African countries: Senegal, Burundi, Rwanda and Ethiopia and w

Disruption of a gene encoding C4-dicarboxylate transporter-like protein increases ozone sensitivity through deregulation of the stomatal response in Arabidopsis thaliana.

To understand better the plant response to ozone, we isolated and characterized an ozone-sensitive (ozs1) mutant strain from a set of T-DNA-tagged Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia. The mutant plants show enhanced sensitivity to ozone, desiccation and sulfur dioxide, but have normal sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide, low temperature and high light levels. The T-DNA was inserted at a single locus which is linked to ozone sensitivity. Identification of the genomic sequences flanking the T-DNA insertion revealed disruption of a gene encoding a transporter-like protein of the tellurite resistan

Parallel subgenome structure and divergent expression evolution of allo-tetraploid common carp and goldfish.

How two subgenomes in allo-tetraploids adapt to coexistence and coordinate through structure and expression evolution requires extensive studies. In the present study, we report an improved genome assembly of allo-tetraploid common carp, an updated genome annotation of allo-tetraploid goldfish and the chromosome-scale assemblies of a progenitor-like diploid Puntius tetrazona and an outgroup diploid Paracanthobrama guichenoti. Parallel subgenome structure evolution in the allo-tetraploids was featured with equivalent chromosome components, higher protein identities, similar transposon divergenc

Salicylic acid-dependent immunity contributes to resistance against Rhizoctonia solani, a necrotrophic fungal agent of sheath blight, in rice and Brachypodium distachyon.

Rhizoctonia solani is a soil-borne fungus causing sheath blight. In consistent with its necrotrophic life style, no rice cultivars fully resistant to R. solani are known, and agrochemical plant defense activators used for rice blast, which upregulate a phytohormonal salicylic acid (SA)-dependent pathway, are ineffective towards this pathogen. As a result of the unavailability of genetics, the infection process of R. solani remains unclear. We used the model monocotyledonous plants Brachypodium distachyon and rice, and evaluated the effects of phytohormone-induced resistance to R. solani by pha

Diversification in Hawaiian long-legged flies (Diptera: Dolichopodidae: Campsicnemus): biogeographic isolation and ecological adaptation.

Flies in the genus Campsicnemus have diversified into the second-largest adaptive radiation of Diptera in the Hawaiian Islands, with 179 Hawaiian endemic species currently described. Here we present the first phylogenetic analysis of Campsicnemus, with a focus on the Hawaiian fauna. We analyzed a combination of two nuclear (CAD, EF1α) and five mitochondrial (COI, COII, 12S, 16S, ND2) loci using Bayesian and maximum likelihood approaches to generate a phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus Campsicnemus. Our sampling included a total of 84 species (6 species from Europe, 1 from North America, 7 s

The promoter of the plant defensin gene PDF1.2 from Arabidopsis is systemically activated by fungal pathogens and responds to methyl jasmonate but not to salicylic acid.

The plant defensin PDF1.2 has previously been shown to accumulate systemically via a salicylic acid-independent pathway in leaves of Arabidopsis upon challenge by fungal pathogens. To further investigate the signalling and transcriptional processes underlying plant defensin induction, a DNA fragment containing 1184 bp and 1232 bp upstream of the transcriptional and translational start sites, respectively, was cloned by inverse PCR. To test for promoter activity this DNA fragment was linked to the beta-glucuronidase (GUS)-encoding region of the UidA gene as a translational fusion and introduced

The effects of promoter variations of the N-Methylcanadine 1-Hydroxylase (CYP82Y1) gene on the noscapine production in opium poppy.

Noscapine is an antitumor alkaloid produced in opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and some members of the Papaveraceae family. It has been primarily used for its antitussive effects; more recently, its anticancer properties were shown. Herein, we detected an SSR embedded in the promoter region of the CYP82Y1 gene, which was found to be the first committed-step enzyme in the noscapine biosynthesis pathway, using the MISA program. Some collected ecotypes of P. somniferum were investigated for understanding of SSRs role in the regulation of gene expression and metabolite content. Quantitative PCR s

Integrated Spatial and Bulk Transcriptomic Analysis Identifies a Multicellular Ecosystem Involved in Progression of Young Breast Cancer.

Young breast cancer (YBC), defined as diagnosis at or before the age of 40 years, is characterized by an aggressive phenotype and poor prognosis. The tumor microenvironment (TME), comprising immune and stromal cells, plays a critical role in tumor initiation and progression and is closely associated with clinical outcomes. However, alterations in cell states and the organization of multicellular ecosystems within the YBC microenvironment remain poorly understood. We analyzed 7379 bulk transcriptome samples and spatial transcriptomic data from eight samples using EcoTyper and complementary spat

Morphological, molecular, and pharmacological review of veldt grape (Cissus quadrangularis L.): an underutilized medicinal plant.

Cissus quadrangularis, commonly known as veldt grape, is an underutilized medicinal plant belonging to the Vitaceae family, widely found in tropical regions of India with diverse populations. The plant is also known for its rich phytochemical profile, including ketosteroids and flavonoids that enhance osteoblast activity and accelerate fracture healing. Also, this genus is unique in having a high degree of drought tolerance due to its facultative crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) pathway. The CAM pathway in C. quadrangularis enhances its ability to sustain metabolic activity under drought str

The Diversity of the Brains of Ray-Finned Fishes.

Brains are very plastic, both in response to phenotypic diversity and to larger evolutionary trends. Differences between taxa cannot be easily attributed to either factors. Comparative morphological data on higher taxonomic levels are scarce, especially in ray-finned fishes. Here we show the great diversity of brain areas of more than 150 species of ray-finned fishes by volumetric measurements using block-face imaging. We found that differences among families or orders are more likely due to environmental needs than to systematic position. Most notable changes are present in the brain areas pr

Osmotic stress-triggered stomatal closure requires Phospholipase Dδ and hydrogen sulfide in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Osmotic stress is one of the main stresses seriously affects the growth and development of plants. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emerges as the third gaseous signal molecule to involve in the complex network of signaling events. Phospholipase Dδ (PLDδ), as signal enzyme, responds to many biotic or abiotic stress responses. In this study, the functions and the relationship of PLDδ and H2S in stomatal closure induced by osmotic stress were explored. Using the seedlings of ecotype (WT), PLDδ deficient mutant (pldδ), L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD) deficient mutant (lcd) and pldδlcd double mutant as mater
