Validity in the Era of Competency-Based Health Professions Education: Tensions and Potential Solutions.

Assessment in health professions education has evolved dramatically in the past hundred years. The way in which we conceptualize validity has also required evolution, particularly in the era of competency-based health professions education (CBHPE). The CBHPE approach compels us to reexamine a historical focus on objectivity, individual assessments, and standards of achievement alone. In this manuscript, the authors explore the implications CBHPE places on validity, highlighting three tension points: the paradigm of assessment, levels of validation, and the reference for competence. The authors

Supporting PharmD graduates after unsuccessful licensing examination attempts.

Not passing the North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) is the reality for a significant number of PharmD graduates. The average first time pass rates for the NAPLEX have experienced significant drops since 2017, hitting an all-time low (76.6 %) for the Class of 2023. While most candidates eventually pass the NAPLEX, a staggering 3228 PharmD graduates remain unlicensed due to unsuccessful licensure examinations from cycle years 2022 to 2024. Further decline is anticipated with impending changes to the structure of the NAPLEX in 2025. Unfortunately, unlicensed graduates are unabl

Spaced repetition and active recall improves academic performance among pharmacy students.

Pharmacy students rely heavily on traditional learning methods like passive review of learned material and rote memorization that eventually leads to rapid forgetting and poor long-term retention. This is a serious problem in pharmacy field because students must retain a plethora of information like drug names, adverse effects, drug interactions, indications, and contraindications etc. Passive review of the study material by simply re-reading lecture notes or highlighting textbooks, creates a false sense of familiarity rather than true understanding. In recent times, learning techniques like s

The Shadow Economy of Effort: Unintended Consequences of Pass/Fail Grading on Medical Students' Clinical Education and Patient Care Skills.

The shift to pass/fail grading in undergraduate medical education was designed to reduce medical students' stress. However, this change has given rise to a "shadow economy of effort," as students move away from traditional didactic and clinical learning to engage in increasing numbers of research, volunteer, and work experiences to enhance their residency applications. These extracurricular efforts to secure a residency position are subphenomena of the hidden curriculum. Medical schools do not officially require all the activities students need to be most competitive for residency selection; t

The impact of holistic review on correlations between doctoral student outcomes, and GPA and GRE scores in the biomedical sciences.

Graduate admissions committees throughout the United States examine both quantitative and qualitative data from applicants to make admissions determinations. A number of recent studies have examined the ability of commonly used quantitative metrics such as the GRE and undergraduate GPA to predict the likelihood of applicant success in graduate programs. We examined whether an admissions committee could predict applicant success at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences based on quantitative metrics. We analyzed the predictive validity

Technical Characteristics of Curriculum-Based Measurement With Students Who Are Deaf.

This study compared the reliability and validity of student scores from paper-pencil and e-based assessments using the "maze" and "silent reading fluency" (SRF) tasks. Forty students who were deaf and hard of hearing and reading between the second and fifth grade reading levels and their teachers (n = 21) participated. For maze, alternate form reliability coefficients obtained from correct scores and correct scores adjusted for guessing ranged from r = .61 to .84 (ps < .01); criterion-related validity coefficients ranged from r = .33 to .67 (most ps < .01). For SRF, reliability coefficients ob

Towards a program of assessment for health professionals: from training into practice.

Despite multifaceted attempts to "protect the public," including the implementation of various assessment practices designed to identify individuals at all stages of training and practice who underperform, profound deficiencies in quality and safety continue to plague the healthcare system. The purpose of this reflections paper is to cast a critical lens on current assessment practices and to offer insights into ways in which they might be adapted to ensure alignment with modern conceptions of health professional education for the ultimate goal of improved healthcare. Three dominant themes wil

Accelerating chronically unresponsive children to tier 3 instruction: what level of data is necessary to ensure selection accuracy?

Response-to-intervention (RTI) approaches to disability identification are meant to put an end to the so-called wait-to-fail requirement associated with IQ discrepancy. However, in an unfortunate irony, there is a group of children who wait to fail in RTI frameworks. That is, they must fail both general classroom instruction (Tier 1) and small-group intervention (Tier 2) before becoming eligible for the most intensive intervention (Tier 3). The purpose of this article was to determine how to predict accurately which at-risk children will be unresponsive to Tiers 1 and 2, thereby allowing unres

Discriminant analysis to predict graduation--nongraduation in a master's degree program in nursing.

Discriminant analysis was used to predict graduation and two categories of nongraduation from readily available admissions data at the University of Kansas nursing master's degree program. The traditional admissions indices, baccalaureate grade point average (GPA) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE)-verbal and -quantitative scores, were used as predictors. Criterion categories were composed of 102 graduates, 103 individuals who dropped out of the program, and 65 individuals who were not accepted. The first discriminant function was, chi 2 (6) = 87.567, p less than .0001, and extracted 98% of

Entry to medical school: an audit of traditional selection requirements.

The major focus in the selection of entrants for medical school has traditionally been on academic achievement in school-leaving examinations in which certain science subjects are a requirement. A longitudinal study of 413 successful applicants was undertaken to determine the relationship of these admission criteria to subsequent performance. The findings support a correlation between overall marks in the school-leaving examination and the annual Grade Point Averages. Those students in the top quartile for marks showed a significant advantage in terms of achievement but only in the preclinical
