Biomechanical Property and Biocompatibility of a New Silicone Rubber Nasal Retainer (Nostriloo).

Nasal retainers have been utilized to maintain the position of the nose after primary rhinoplasty in cleft lip patients. However, commercial nasal retainers made from silicone are quite expensive. To address this issue, the authors designed an alternative nasal retainer that is affordable, safe, and has similar biomechanical and biocompatibility properties to other commercial nasal retainers. Three types of nasal retainers were tested: our own (Nostriloo), a commercial nasal retainer from Turkey, and another one from Taiwan. There were 3 samples on each group, with a total sample of 9 retainer

Dual crosslinkable hybrid alginate/ methacrylated gelatin/ cartilage extracellular matrix hydrogels for cartilage printing.

A novel tri-component bioink composed of methacrylated gelatin (GelMA), alginate, and decellularized cartilage extracellular matrix (dcECM) was developed to enhance both the printability and biological performance of hydrogel scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering. The incorporation of cartilage-specific dcECM was employed as a key strategy to provide a biologically instructive microenvironment while maintaining suitable rheological properties for extrusion-based bioprinting. Rheological analyses revealed pronounced shear-thinning behavior, good thermal stability, and a predominantly elast

Correction of secondary deformity after Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum by means of cultured autologous cartilage cell injection.

INTRODUCTION: For some cases of pectus excavatum, ideal chest shape cannot be achieved solely by performing the Nuss procedure. This manuscript presents a case where the residual deformity following Nuss was corrected using injection-transplantation of cultured autologous chondrocytes. PRESENTATION OF CASE: The treatment was performed for an 18-year-old male, who sought improvement of his chest shape after previously undergoing the Nuss procedure. A 1cm(2) auricular cartilage piece was harvested from his ear. Chondrocytes were isolated from the cartilage piece and were cultured. The cultured

The deformation behavior and mechanical properties of chondrocytes in articular cartilage.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrocytes in articular cartilage utilize mechanical signals to regulate their metabolic activity. A fundamental step in determining the role of various biophysical factors in this process is to characterize the local mechanical environment of the chondrocyte under physiological loading. METHODS: A combined experimental and theoretical approach was used to quantify the in-situ mechanical environment of the chondrocyte. The mechanical properties of enzymatically-isolated chondrocytes and their pericellular matrix (PCM) were determined using micropipette aspiration. The values w

Photocrosslinked natural hydrogel composed of hyaluronic acid and gelatin enhances cartilage regeneration of decellularized trachea matrix.

Repair of long segmental trachea defects is always a great challenge in the clinic. The key to solving this problem is to develop an ideal trachea substitute with biological function. Using of a decellularized trachea matrix based on laser micropore technique (LDTM) demonstrated the possibility of preparing ideal trachea substitutes with tubular shape and satisfactory cartilage regeneration for tissue-engineered trachea regeneration. However, as a result of the very low cell adhesion of LDTM, an overly high concentration of seeding cell is required, which greatly restricts its clinical transla

Mechanical properties of stingray tesserae: High-resolution correlative analysis of mineral density and indentation moduli in tessellated cartilage.

Skeletal tissues are built and shaped through complex, interacting active and passive processes. These spatial and temporal variabilities make interpreting growth mechanisms from morphology difficult, particularly in bone, where the remodeling process erases and rewrites local structural records of growth throughout life. In contrast to the majority of bony vertebrates, the elasmobranch fishes (sharks, rays, and their relatives) have skeletons made of cartilage, reinforced by an outer layer of mineralized tiles (tesserae), which are believed to grow only by deposition, without remodeling. We e

Mechanical behavior of idealized, stingray-skeleton-inspired tiled composites as a function of geometry and material properties.

Tilings are constructs of repeated shapes covering a surface, common in both manmade and natural structures, but in particular are a defining characteristic of shark and ray skeletons. In these fishes, cartilaginous skeletal elements are wrapped in a surface tessellation, comprised of polygonal mineralized tiles linked by flexible joints, an arrangement believed to provide both stiffness and flexibility. The aim of this research is to use two-dimensional analytical models to evaluate the mechanical performance of stingray skeleton-inspired tessellations, as a function of their material and str

Toward Integrative Biomechanical Models of Osteochondral Tissues: A Multilayered Perspective.

Understanding the complex mechanical behavior of osteochondral tissues in silico is essential for improving experimental models and advancing research in joint health and degeneration. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the constitutive models currently used to represent the different layers of the osteochondral region, from articular cartilage to subchondral bone, including intermediate regions such as the tidemark and the calcified cartilage layer. Each layer exhibits unique structural and mechanical properties, necessitating a layer-specific modeling approach. Through critical

Larynx morphology and sound production in three species of Testudinidae.

Although the ability to vocalize is widespread among tortoises, the mechanisms of sound production in chelonians remain undescribed. In this study, we analyze the morphology and histology of the larynx of three species of Testudinidae (Testudo hermanni, T. graeca, and T. marginata) in order to ascertain the presence of vibrating acoustic structure, and based on our findings we propose a general model for phonation in tortoises. The structure of the larynx of the three tortoises analyzed is simple: three cartilages (the cricoid and two arytenoids) form the skeleton of the larynx, while two pair

Tendinous insertions in the human thyroid cartilage plate: macroscopic and histologic studies.

The zones of tendinuous insertion and origin of the sternothyroid muscle, the thyrohyoid muscle, the inferior constrictor muscle of the pharynx and the external part of the cricothyroid muscle were studied in adult larynges by macroscopy and light microscopy. The sternothyroid muscle is inserted in the superior and inferior thyroid tubercula and also in a tendinous arch, which extends between the two tubercula. In contrast to the descriptions found in most textbooks, the sternothyroid muscle has no attachment to the oblique line. The thyrohyoid muscle and the thyropharyngeal part of the inferi

The petrified auricle: comments on ossification, calcification and exostoses of the external ear.

The petrified auricle is a clinical entity in which the auricle, in part or total, has become stone-hard and moves as a rigid unit. This uncommon condition is most often due to ectopic calcification of the auricular cartilage. It may occur as a result of local trauma, in association with various systemic diseases such as Addison's disease, hypopituitarism, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, or following radiation therapy. Auricular ossificans (ectopic ossification) is a rare phenomenon in which the rigidity of the petrified ear is due to replacement of the elastic cartilage by bone. In the lite

[The ossification of the ear cartilage in Addison's disease].

Stiffening and tenderness of the helix of the ear, with radiologically demonstrable calcific deposits, has been reported in various conditions such as frostbite, and also in Addison's disease. To a total of 14 clinical observations with only 4 well documented cases, a first autopsy report of the disorder in a case of tuberculosus Addison's disease is added. It is shown that the elastic cartilage of the pinna, of the epiglottis and of the trachea undergoes ossification without preceding dystrophic or metastatic calcification. The ossification has been observed only in males with longstanding Ad

Combined cartilage thickness and mechanical property mismatch drives local strain amplification at the patellar osteochondral allograft interface.

Patellar osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation treats focal cartilage defects, but donor-recipient cartilage thickness and mechanical compatibility are not routinely quantified during graft selection. This idealized computational study evaluated associations of donor-to-recipient (D/R) thickness ratio, absolute stiffness, stiffness contrast, and depth-dependent stiffness with interface-local strain. Two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element models were subjected to a spatially uniform nominal pressure of 1.00 MPa. Nine D/R ratios (0.33-3.25) and eleven homogeneous donor/recipient (DC

The critical size of focal articular cartilage defects is associated with strains in the collagen fibers.

The size of full-thickness focal cartilage defect is accepted to be predictive of its fate, but at which size threshold treatment is required is unclear. Clarification of the mechanism behind this threshold effect will help determining when treatment is required. The objective was to investigate the effect of defect size on strains in the collagen fibers and the non-fibrillar matrix of surrounding cartilage. These strains may indicate matrix disruption. Tissue deformation into the defect was expected, stretching adjacent superficial collagen fibers, while an osteochondral implant was expected

[Relapsing polychondritis : A rare differential diagnosis in clinical practice].

Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory, systemic disease primarily leading to structural damage and impaired function of cartilage tissue. However, the systemic inflammatory process in RPC can also affect sensory organ structures, the respiratory tract, the nervous and cardiovascular systems as well as the kidneys. The immune-mediated disease leads to recurrent inflammatory attacks causing a progressive degradation of elastic and hyaline cartilage structures, especially in the ears, nose, larynx, trachea and diarthrodial joints. However, other connective tissu

Anatomical definition of the subglottic region.

BACKGROUND: Due to laryngeal neoplasia, as well as infectious and autoimmune diseases, the subglottic region is of great clinical relevance. However, descriptions of the subglottic structures are inconsistent. The aim of our study was to present a precise analysis of the subglottic region and derive functional and clinical conclusions. METHODS: Histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical investigations as well as scanning electron microscopy were performed and combined with injection techniques applied to the subglottic region of the larynges of 33 body donors. RESULTS: The three-dim

Iliotibial band stiffness is associated with patellar height.

Increased patellar height (i.e., patella alta) is associated with patellar instability, patellofemoral pain, and cartilage lesions. Despite its importance, the relationship between patellar height and soft-tissue stiffness remains unclear, which this study aimed to investigate. Twenty-two young participants (11 females; age 26.1 ± 3.8 years) were recruited for this study. The shear elastic moduli of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, lateral patellofemoral ligament, medial patellofemoral ligament, and iliotibial band (ITB) were measured using shear wave elastography as indi
