INTRODUCTION: High-voltage electrical injuries (HVEI) can lead to a wide range of complications, including musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiac, and renal damage. Hematological complications are rare but have been reported, with aplastic anemia being an exceptionally uncommon consequence. To date, only two cases of aplastic anemia following HVEI have been documented.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 21-year-old male who sustained a HVEI and developed progressive pancytopenia during hospitalization. Despite stable vital signs and initially normal lab results, his hemoglobin dropped

Although an electric iron will be found in almost every home, injuries from this useful and low-cost device are unexpected. There is little data on electric iron contact burns (non-electrocution) in children and an absolute lack of literature dealing with accidental fatalities from electric irons. This study sets out to describe the causes and patterns of domestic fatalities in females from electric irons.

Pulmonary involvement after high-voltage electrocution is rare and may present with hypoxemia and pulmonary hypertension out of proportion to imaging, suggesting a vascular/endothelial mechanism. The objective of this report is to describe a case of disproportionate hypoxemia with severe pulmonary hypertension after electrocution, highlight diagnostic pitfalls, and outline management implications. A previously healthy 46-year-old man sustained high-voltage electrocution, required prolonged resuscitation, and developed severe hypoxemia (PaO₂/FiO₂ (ratio of arterial oxygen partial pressure to fr

Electrical burn injuries can cause devastating and debilitating morbidities and impairments for patients. This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on electrical burn patients hospitalized from 2014 to 2019 to evaluate electrical burn injuries' epidemiology and characteristics. A total number of 726 patients with the mean age of 31.17 years were evaluated for electrical burn injuries. Mean total burn surface area (TBSA) was 16.61 ± 12.56. Most victims were male (696 cases, 95.7%) and most patients did not have a constant job (n = 458, 63%). Most affected burn sites were hands (28.6%

Previous studies on the mechanisms of peripheral nerve injury (PNI) have mainly focused on the pathophysiological changes within a single injury site. However, recent studies have indicated that within the central nervous system, PNI can lead to changes in both injury sites and target organs at the cellular and molecular levels. Therefore, the basic mechanisms of PNI have not been comprehensively understood. Although electrical stimulation was found to promote axonal regeneration and functional rehabilitation after PNI, as well as to alleviate neuropathic pain, the specific mechanisms of succe

BACKGROUND: Electric scooters are personal mobility devices that have risen in popularity worldwide since 2017. Emerging reports suggest that both riders and other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, have been injured in electric scooter-associated incidents. We undertook a scoping review of the current literature to evaluate the injury patterns and circumstances of electric scooter-associated injuries.
METHODS: A scoping review of literature published from 2010 to 2020 was undertaken following accepted guidelines. Relevant articles were identified in Medline, Embase, SafetyLit and

Spinal cord injury has been described in only 2% to 5% of electrical injuries. When its presentation is delayed for several days to weeks after the initial injury, recovery is not the rule. Herein, we describe two patients who developed spinal cord injury from electrical burns. Case 1: A 60-year-old male presented with a 40% TBSA after contacting a power line. On hospital day 6, he developed lower extremity weakness that progressed to flaccid paralysis. Case 2: A 58-year-old male sustained a 9% TBSA high-voltage injury. On hospital day 2, he started to have progressive weakness of his lower ex

Intense electric shocks of nanosecond (ns) duration can become a new modality for more efficient but safer defibrillation. We extended strength-duration curves for excitation of cardiomyocytes down to 200 ns, and compared electroporative damage by proportionally more intense shocks of different duration. Enzymatically isolated murine, rabbit, and swine adult ventricular cardiomyocytes (VCM) were loaded with a Ca2+ indicator Fluo-4 or Fluo-5N and subjected to shocks of increasing amplitude until a Ca2+ transient was optically detected. Then, the voltage was increased 5-fold, and the electric ce

Electrical injury occurs as a result of direct contact with an electrical source. We present the case of a 62-year-old male patient, an electrician by profession, who was hit by a high-voltage electrical current while working with cables in proximity to a wet floor. The patient suffered from immediate loss of consciousness and five days later he started complaining of slight hearing loss, persistent vertigo, instability and bilateral tinnitus. A thorough audiological and vestibular examination revealed an extensive bilateral vestibulocochlear dysfunction. The exact pathogenetic mechanisms of i

RATIONAL: There has been increased focus on hemostatic potential and function in the initial assessment of the patient with traumatic injuries, that not been extensively studied in patients with burns. We proposed to determine the hemostatic potential of patients with burns upon admission to the emergency department and contrasted their condition with that of healthy controls and patients with other traumatic injuries. In addition we assessed differences due to thermal versus electrical injury and evaluated the effect of burn size.
METHODS: This is a patient based prospective observational st

Electrical shock can result in neurological complications, involving both peripheral and central nervous systems, which may present immediately or later on. However, delayed neurological complications caused by low-voltage electric shock are rarely reported. Here, a case of a man suffering from weakness and aphasia due to the delayed-onset of the peripheral nerve injury and ischemic stroke following an electrical shock is presented. Possible mechanisms underlying the neurological complications include thermal injury to perineural tissue, overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, vascular

A 19-year-old man presented 4 weeks after an electrical shock injury with gradual onset limb weakness, altered sensation in the peripheries and respiratory difficulty. There was immediate tingling of the fingers following the electrical injury that persisted. He subsequently had transient facial weakness responsive to oral steroids before the development of further limb symptoms. On admission the clinical picture and investigation findings, including neurophysiology, cerebrospinal fluid examination and MRI were consistent with a Guillain-Barre syndrome. He was managed with a course of intraven

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of diagnostic tests and specialty consultations in aiding the diagnosis of long-term symptoms after low-voltage electrical injury (EI). A retrospective hospital chart review of low-voltage electrical-injured patients admitted to the outpatient burn clinic of a rehabilitation hospital was conducted (January 2002 to March 2006). Results of tests and specialty consultations were compared between patients with low-voltage contact injuries and patients with low-voltage flash injuries using Student's t-test and χ(2) with a P < .05 considered si

Electrical burns are among the most devastating of burn injuries. High voltage electrical injuries result in extensive deep tissue damage and are associated with multiple complications, long term morbidity, and a high mortality rate. We describe the case of a 47 year-old electric company linesman who suffered a high voltage electrical injury (HVEI) of 14,000 volts to bilateral hands and wrists managed by the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the McGill University Health Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His management included multiple operative procedures, including escharot

We report a case of air embolism in an industrial worker complicating a deep electrical injury in the neck. He was found dead in an upright position while his chest and head were resting on top of a live transformer. At autopsy, there were multiple electrical burns involving the face, neck, chest, and arms. There was a deep electrical burn associated with hemorrhage in the neck involving the skin, underlying subcutaneous tissue, strap muscles, and the thyroid gland. The internal examination showed a prominently bulging right atrium, which was filled with air and not blood. At autopsy, when the

BACKGROUND: Microvascular reconstruction is rarely indicated in burn injuries. As the versatility and variability of free flaps have increased significantly during recent years so, the indications for this procedure have been expanded for limb salvage after electrical injuries.
METHODS: We report retrospectively the results of 26 free flaps for extremity reconstruction in 19 patients suffering from severe electrical burn injuries. Nine different free flap types were used. On the basis of this experience we were able to establish reconstructive principles in electrical injuries pertinent to th
