A Clinical Trial of a Novel Electroencephalography Device as a Predictor of Postoperative Delirium.

Postoperative delirium is a public health and research priority. The International Perioperative Neurotoxicity Working Group recommends baseline cognitive function be assessed for older patients prior to surgery and anesthesia. Perioperative cognitive screening tools trialed in anesthesia are not routinely incorporated into clinical practice related to validity, reliability, or practicality concerns. The ideal perioperative cognitive screening tool would be rapid; easily administrable; valid; reliable; automatically scored; void of language, cultural, and education bias; and cost-efficient. No

Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) as an Innovative Diagnostic Tool in Mental Disorders.

Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) is becoming an increasingly common method of diagnosing neurological disorders and, following the recommendations of The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS), it can be used as a complementary method in the diagnosis of epilepsy, vascular diseases, dementia, and encephalopathy. However, few studies are confirming the importance of QEEG in the diagnosis of mental disorders and changes occurring as a result of therapy; hence, there is a need for analyses in this area. The aim of the study is analys

Deep Learning in Automatic Sleep Staging With a Single Channel Electroencephalography.

This study centers on automatic sleep staging with a single channel electroencephalography (EEG), with some significant findings for sleep staging. In this study, we proposed a deep learning-based network by integrating attention mechanism and bidirectional long short-term memory neural network (AT-BiLSTM) to classify wakefulness, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep stages N1, N2 and N3. The AT-BiLSTM network outperformed five other networks and achieved an accuracy of 83.78%, a Cohen's kappa coefficient of 0.766 and a macro F1-score of 82.14% on the PhysioNet Sleep-EDF Exp

Interrater agreement in the interpretation of neonatal electroencephalography in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Research using neonatal electroencephalography (EEG) has been limited by a lack of a standardized classification system and interpretation terminology. In 2013, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) published a guideline for standardized terminology and categorization in the description of continuous EEG in neonates. We sought to assess interrater agreement for this neonatal EEG categorization system as applied by a group of pediatric neurophysiologists. METHODS: A total of 60 neonatal EEG studies were collected from three institutions. All EEG segments were from ter

Decoding human swallowing via electroencephalography: a state-of-the-art review.

Swallowing and swallowing disorders have garnered continuing interest over the past several decades. Electroencephalography (EEG) is an inexpensive and non-invasive procedure with very high temporal resolution which enables analysis of short and fast swallowing events, as well as an analysis of the organizational and behavioral aspects of cortical motor preparation, swallowing execution and swallowing regulation. EEG is a powerful technique which can be used alone or in combination with other techniques for monitoring swallowing, detection of swallowing motor imagery for diagnostic or biofeedb

Prognostic value of amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in neonates with hypernatremic dehydration.

OBJECTIVES: Hypernatremic dehydration in neonates is a condition that develops due to inadequate fluid intake and it may lead to cerebral damage. We aimed to determine whether there was an association between serum sodium levels on admission and aEEG patterns and prognosis, as well as any association between aEEG findings and survival rates and long-term prognosis. METHOD: The present study included all term infants hospitalized for hypernatremic dehydration in between January 2010 and May 2011. Infants were monitored by aEEG. At 2 years of age, we performed a detailed evaluation to assess th

Quantitative electroencephalography for tinnitus--a means for data collection, analysis, and translation.

Quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) is the technique whereby brain electrical activity in individuals is recorded as they sit quietly with their eyes closed. The electrical activity is quantified with a variety of statistical measures to characterize the huge variation in combinations of emissions from the brain. Neuroscience research has demonstrated that such resting brain activity measures may be consistently altered in conditions such as depression or dementia. A wide variety of ongoing efforts are attempting to find characterizations that reliably denote other neurological conditio

Nonconvulsive status epilepticus on electroencephalography in a case with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a neurodegenerative disease with a poor prognosis. We report a case of a 5 1/2-year-old boy who had emotional lability, cognitive difficulties, and myoclonia after a mild closed head injury. The magnetic resonance image of the brain and computed tomographic scan of the head were normal. His electroencephalogram (EEG) showed continuous nonconvulsive status epilepticus activity, which could not be suppressed with intravenous diazepam. After treatment with phenytoin for 2 days, an EEG showed periodic high-amplitude sharp-and-slow-wave complexes, which were a

Utility of multimodal evoked potential study and electroencephalography in mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

We performed electroencephalography (EEG) and multimodal evoked potential (EP) studies in 16 patients with various forms of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy (ME). The electrophysiological investigations revealed signs of involvement of the peripheral and central nervous system (CNS) in 14 patients, with a high incidence of visual-EP (VEP) alterations, indicative of visual pathway vulnerability in mitochondrial diseases. No specific pattern of abnormalities emerged and, in particular, clinical and laboratory findings did not correlate with each other. EP (particularly VEP and electroretinogram)

Beyond homogeneity: charting the landscape of heterogeneity in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric electroencephalography.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has been thoroughly studied for decades in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric research. Yet its integration into clinical practice as a diagnostic/prognostic tool remains unachieved. We hypothesize that a key reason is the underlying patient's heterogeneity, overlooked in EEG research relying on a case-control approach. We combine high-density EEG with normative modeling to quantify this heterogeneity using two well-established and extensively investigated EEG characteristics -spectral power and functional connectivity- across a cohort of 1674 patients with attenti

A machine learning approach for detection of claustrophobic brain activity in electroencephalography.

Claustrophobia, a phobia with a specific unreasonable and excessive fear of enclosed spaces, can have a considerable impact on an individual's life. Electroencephalography (EEG) has been a tool with potential for studying neural processes in anxiety disorders including claustrophobia. In this work, a machine learning algorithm for differentiation between claustrophobic and healthy controls using EEG signals is presented. EEG data were collected from 22 participants under controlled conditions, and preprocessing included filtering, artifact removal, and feature extraction using relative Power S

The Value of Stereo-electroencephalography in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: Huashan Experience.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is one of the most common drug-refractory epilepsies. However, the diagnosis and treatment of TLE may be improved by better understanding its complex network. In this article, the authors summarize their experience with TLE and discuss their process for using stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) as part of presurgical evaluation in the past 10 years. The authors demonstrate the value of SEEG in different types of TLE and discuss how their findings have impacted treatment options. Ultimately, the authors' experience will help other centers in addressing TLE cases.

Wavelet analysis of intermittent dynamics in nocturnal electrocardiography and electroencephalography data.

This paper presents the results of a study of the characteristics of phase synchronization between electrocardiography(ECG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals during night sleep. Polysomnographic recordings of eight generally healthy subjects and eight patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome were selected as experimental data. A feature of this study was the introduction of an instantaneous phase for EEG and ECG signals using a continuous wavelet transform at the heart rate frequency using the concept of time scale synchronization, which eliminated the emergence of asynchronous ar
