Findings from five separate studies of EMG changes and muscle fatigue during prolonged low-level static contractions are summarized, and the possible mechanisms behind the changes are briefly discussed. Sustained static contractions (10%, 7% and 5% MVC) of up to 1 h duration were performed by finger flexors, elbow flexors and extensors, and knee extensors. In one experiment, intermittent static arm pulling (triceps) (10 s contraction and 5 s rest, average work load 14% and 10% MVC) was performed for 7 h. The endurance time for the sustained contractions was around one hour for 10% MVC, and it

One hundred and forty-four patients presenting with a Bell's palsy were seen at Sunnybrook Medical Centre, University of Toronto, between the years 1978 and 1985. Only patients with a complete paralysis and not treated with either steroids or surgical decompression of the facial nerve were included in the study. The results of electrical tests performed on days 8, 9 or 10 after the onset of paralysis in 23 patients were used to predict clinical recovery at 12 weeks, six months and 12 months. There was good statistical correlation for values of conduction latency and amplitude with good clinica

In five patients with multiple system atrophy, electromyographic studies using a new surface electrode technique, showed unequivocal evidence of denervation of the posterior crico-arytenoid muscle, and in three of them, of the interarytenoid muscle or crico-pharyngeal sphincter. By comparison, only minor electromyographic abnormalities were found in one-third of patients with other extra-pyramidal syndromes, though in two cases, the abnormalities were of a different kind from those found in multiple system atrophy.

Muscle tone is defined as the resistance to passive stretch, but this definition is often criticized for its ambiguity since some suggest it is related to a state of preparation for movement. Muscle tone is primarily regulated by the central nervous system, and individuals with neurological disorders may lose the ability to control normal tone and can exhibit abnormalities. Currently, these abnormalities are mostly evaluated using subjective scales, highlighting a lack of objective assessment methods in the literature. This study aimed to use surface electromyography (sEMG) and machine learnin

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an intrinsic factor that leads to balance disorders and falls in older adults. However, the characterization of sarcopenia-related postural balance deficits remains unclear.
AIMS: This study aimed to explore the balance performance and postural control strategy in older adults with sarcopenia during static stance tasks using force platforms and surface electromyography.
METHODS: Older adults with right-sided dominance were recruited, including 27 adults with sarcopenia and 27 healthy counterparts. Postural sway was measured with eyes open/closed on rigid/compliant s

INTRODUCTION: Highly sensitive, external uterine electromyography (EMG) measures myometrial electrical activity and is noninvasive compared with the clinical intrauterine pressure catheter. Most experimental studies have measured EMG in 30-minute epochs, limiting the utility of this instrumentation in intrapartum clinical practice. To test proof of concept, surface uterine EMG contraction activity was continuously collected throughout the first stage of labor from healthy women at term gestation with (n = 3) and without (n = 1) epidural or combined spinal-epidural analgesia for a maximal lengt

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: There are two conventional needle electromyography (EMG) approaches to the serratus anterior (SA), both of which can result in erroneous insertion into adjacent structures such as the latissimus dorsi (LD), teres major, or external oblique abdominis muscles and pose a risk of long thoracic nerve (LTN) injury. Therefore, we identified a novel needle insertion point for the SA in cadavers that avoids other muscles and LTN injury.
METHODS: This study included 17 cadavers: 12 to devise the new method and 5 to verify its accuracy. Novel landmarks were the inferior angle of the s

BACKGROUND: The strength of uterine contraction is one of the decisive factors for labor progression and parturition. Clinicians usually encounter difficulties in early identification of inadequate contractions and in oxytocin treatment. Electromyography-an emerging technology for uterine contraction monitoring-can quantify the intensity of myoelectric activity of uterine contraction. Therefore, grading patients with different uterine contraction intensities by electromyography is of great significance to the clinical intensive management of uterine contraction and labor process.

Electromyography plays a pivotal role in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of electromyography in infants. We performed a retrospective study of the infants who underwent electromyography from 2003 to 2017 and recorded demographic profile, indication, electrodiagnostic findings, and final diagnosis from the follow-up data. 179 studies were completed; electromyography was abnormal in 109 (60.9%) patients. The most common referral indication was hypotonia followed by birth trauma related injuries and rule out neuromuscular disorders. The mo

OBJECTIVE: The C7 vertebral body is morphometrically unique; it represents the transition from the subaxial cervical spine to the upper thoracic spine. It has larger pedicles but relatively small lateral masses compared to other levels of the subaxial cervical spine. Although the biomechanical properties of C7 pedicle screws are superior to those of lateral mass screws, they are rarely placed due to increased risk of neurological injury. Although pedicle screw stimulation has been shown to be safe and effective in determining satisfactory screw placement in the thoracolumbar spine, there are f

BACKGROUND: Anal sphincter needle electromyography (EMG) is a useful tool to evaluate various neurologic lesions. However, landmark-based needle placement has risks of missing the intended target including risk of bowel penetration. Ultrasound guidance has been widely used to enhance needle placement for various interventional procedures, but it has not been previously reported for use in anal sphincter EMG.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the accuracy of ultrasound-guided needle insertion into the external anal sphincter (EAS).
DESIGN: Observational study.

BACKGROUND: Active upper-limb prostheses are used to restore important hand functionalities, such as grasping. In conventional approaches, a pattern recognition system is trained over a number of static grasping gestures. However, training a classifier in a static position results in lower classification accuracy when performing dynamic motions, such as reach-to-grasp. We propose an electromyography-based learning approach that decodes the grasping intention during the reaching motion, leading to a faster and more natural response of the prosthesis.

Upper eyelid movement depends on the antagonistic actions of orbicularis oculi muscle and levator aponeurosis. Blepharoptosis is an abnormal drooping of upper eyelid margin with the eye in primary position of gaze. Transconjunctival incisions for upper eyelid ptosis correction have been a well-developed technique. Conventional prognosis however depends on clinical observations and lacks of quantitatively analysis for the eyelid muscle controlling. This study examines the possibility of using the assessments of temporal correlation in surface electromyography (SEMG) as a quantitative descriptio

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Following acute injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), laryngeal electromyography (LEMG) is increasingly being used to determine prognosis for recovery. The LEMG findings change during the recovery process, but the timing of these changes is not well described. In this canine study, LEMGs were obtained serially following model RLN injuries.
STUDY DESIGN: Animal Study.
METHODS: Thirty-six canine RLNs underwent crush (n = 6), complete transection with reanastomosis (n = 6), half-transection half-crush (n = 5), cautery (n = 5), stretch (n = 5), inferior crush (n =

BACKGROUND: In sleep efficiency monitoring system, actigraphy is the simplest and most commonly used device. However, low specificity to wakefulness of actigraphy was revealed in previous studies. In this study, we assumed that sleep/wake estimation using actigraphy and electromyography (EMG) signals would show different patterns. Furthermore, each EMG pattern in two states (sleep, wake during sleep) was analysed. Finally, we proposed two types of method for the estimation of sleep/wake patterns using only EMG signals from anterior tibialis muscles and the results were compared with PSG data.

UNLABELLED: The lack of specificity in laryngoscopical examination requires that the diagnosis of superior laryngeal and recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement be carried out with the aid of electromyography.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the electrophysiological function of the superior and inferior laryngeal nerves by measuring the electrical activity of the muscles they innervate in dysphonic patients with incomplete closure of the vocal folds during phonation.
METHOD: Thirty-nine patients with incomplete glottic closure were enrolled in a prospective study and had their cricothyroi

INTRODUCTION: Needle electromyography (NEE) would be more valuable if it could predict outcomes after lumbar epidural steroid injections (LESIs) in lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR).
METHODS: We investigated the predictive value of NEE for outcome after LESI compared with other known predictive variables in 89 subjects with clinical LSR. Seventy patients completed the study, which included diagnostic lower extremity NEE and LESI. Outcome measures included changes in pain, physical function, and psychosocial function [assessed using the Pain Disability Questionnaire (PDQ)].
RESULTS: NEE was an

Neurologic deficit has been implicated as a possible etiology for clubfoot and a cause for recurrent deformity in patients who have undergone clubfoot surgery. In the study reported here, we wanted to determine if clubfoot patients with peroneal weakness had any neurologic deficits on electromyography nerve conduction velocity (EMG-NCV) studies before surgery and if there was any association between neurologic deficit and clubfoot recurrence. We reviewed the EMG-NCV studies of 36 patients involving 57 cases of idiopathic clubfoot and recurrence of the deformity or muscle weakness. In the clubf
