[Estimation of passive smoking during pregnancy by cotinine measurement and its effect on fetal growth].

Maternal cigarette smoking has been associated with some complications of pregnancy, including low birth weight and increased morbidity. Recently, it has been reported that maternal passive smoking also affects the fetal environment and causes fetal growth disturbance. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of maternal passive smoking on pregnant women and their fetuses by measuring cotinine concentrations in maternal urine and umbilical cord blood. The results were as follows: 1) Among 259 pregnant women, 17 cases (6.6%) were active smokers. The women who were not aware of passive

Developmental disturbances of the fetal brain in guinea-pigs caused by methylmercury.

Pregnant guinea-pigs of Hartley strain were orally administered methylmercuric chloride once at a dose of 7.5 mg Hg/animal (weighing 500-800 g) on one of days 21, 28, 35, 42 or 49 (3-7 weeks) of gestation. They were killed on day 63 (9 weeks) and their fetuses were removed. Both maternal and fetal blood, brain, liver and kidney, and fetal hair, urine, gastric content and amniotic fluid as well, were sampled for mercury analysis. The fetal brains were also examined pathologically. The maternal kidney contained mercury at a high concentration but the fetal kidney did not. The mercury concentrati

Experimental pulmonary hypoplasia and oligohydramnios: relative contributions of lung fluid and fetal breathing movements.

Inhibition of fetal breathing movements or increased loss of fetal lung fluid into the amniotic space have been suggested as two possible mechanisms causing pulmonary hypoplasia in the setting of oligohydramnios (OH). We examined the effect of OH produced by amniotic fluid shunting (AS) into the maternal abdominal cavity, ablation of fetal breathing by high cervical cord transection (CT), and CT and AS combined on fetal rabbit lungs at 24 days gestation. Lung growth at term (31 days) was measured by lung DNA content and wet lung weight. Compared to unoperated controls, newborns undergoing eith

Maternal-placental-fetal interactions in the endocrine regulation of fetal growth: role of somatotrophic axes.

Inadequate growth in utero is associated not only with adverse fetal, perinatal, and neonatal outcomes, but also with an altered propensity for disease later in life. Conversely, fetal overgrowth is also associated with increased medical risks for both mother and fetus. The interaction between the fetal genome and the intrauterine environment determines in great part how fetal growth will progress. The placental, maternal, and fetal somatotrophic axes (growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1) play key roles in modulating this interaction. Experimental undernutrition in animal models has nu

Growing kidneys.

The number of kidney transplantations performed per year is restricted by the limited availability of donor organs. One possible solution to this shortage is the use of renal xenografts. However, the transplantation of xenografts is complicated by hyperacute and acute rejection. A second possible solution is to 'grow a kidney' from a transplanted renal anlage. It has been postulated that the host immune response might be attenuated after the transplantation of such an anlage (metanephros) instead of a developed kidney. Transplanted metanephroi become chimeric organs in that their blood supply

Effects of antibacterials on the unborn child: what is known and how should this influence prescribing.

Antibacterials are among the most commonly prescribed drugs worldwide. In general, infections occur in pregnant women at much the same rate as in the general population. However, as a result of physiological changes brought about by pregnancy, some infections, such as those of the urinary tract, may have an increased incidence. It is important to remember that almost every drug crosses the placenta, ensuring that the unborn fetus is also exposed. When prescribing an antibacterial agent to a pregnant woman, it is important that the mother is treated appropriately while at the same time protecti

Effect of persistent follicles on early embryonic losses in beef cows.

Low doses of progestogens in regimens for synchronization of estrus result in persistent follicles (PF) and reduced conception rates in cattle. The effects of PF on recovery of oocytes/embryos, fertilization, and embryonic development were examined in beef cows. To produce PF, cows received a used Controlled Internal Drug Releasing device on Days 4 through 13 after pretreatment estrus (Day 0) and two injections of 20 mg prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha, i.m., 12 h apart on Day 6 (PF; n = 20). Control cows received only PGF2 alpha on Day 6 so they would ovulate growing follicles (GF; n = 22). With t

[Clinical aspects, epidemiologic progression of fetal alcoholism: a current daily problem].

Foetal and neonatal consequences of exogenous intoxications are nowadays better apprehended especially regarding alcohol. Alcoholism during pregnancy is the cause of the syndrome of foetal alcoholism described in France by Lemoine in 1968 and then by Jones and Smith in 1973. The prevalence of the table is 1 out of 700 to 800 deliveries for the severe forms and concerns especially by not exclusively the most underprivileged sections of the population and shows in: -- a very specific dysmorphy of skull and face and other abnormalities which give to the face a singular and persistent aspect; -- v

Evaluating chemotherapy-driven placental alterations and their impact on fetal development.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy during pregnancy presents a clinical challenge, balancing maternal treatment efficacy with fetal safety. While chemotherapy after the first trimester is generally considered safe, its impact on placental development remains underexplored. This study investigates the effects of commonly used chemotherapeutic agents (CAs), including anthracyclines, taxanes, and platinum-based compounds, on maternal, placental, and fetal outcomes using a mouse model. METHODS: To model the chemotherapy exposure during pregnancy, pregnant mice received a single CA dose at embryonic day 13.

Micronutrients and the bone mineral content of the mother, fetus and newborn.

The fluxes of the primary bone-forming minerals, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc, across the placenta and through breast milk place considerable demands on maternal mineral economy. Increases in food consumption, elevated gastrointestinal absorption, decreased mineral excretion and mobilization of tissue stores are several possible biological strategies for meeting these extra mineral requirements. This paper presents a review of the evidence on the extent to which these strategies apply in the human situation, the mechanisms by which they occur, the limitations imposed by maternal die

Separation between the digestive and the respiratory lumina during the human embryonic period: morphometric study along the tracheo-oesophageal septum.

An isolated tracheo-oesophageal fistula could be caused by close proximity of the epithelia of both organs (O'Rahilly & Müller, 1984; Kluth et al. 1987) at certain embryonic stages, the most frequent location being the tracheal bifurcation. Thus the relative position and degree of separation between the digestive and the respiratory tubes throughout their development may be relevant to the origin of this anomaly. The aim of this study was to analyse along the different segments of the tracheo-oesophageal septum (TES) where the closest relationship between both lumina occurred and what degree o

Roles of cytochrome p450 in development.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) forms are ubiquitous in nature, appearing in almost all phyla, with many forms appearing in any organism. About 50 different forms have been identified in man, and some of these are found in the embryo, some showing temporal dependence. Many of the forms of cytochrome P450 present in one species have homologues in other species. For example, CYP1A2 is present in many species, including man, rabbits, rodents, fish and fowl. The amino acid sequence identity of these homologues is often in excess of 70%. CYP26, too, has more than 61% identity in amino acid sequence between f

Disruption of male reproductive tract development by administration of the xenoestrogen, nonylphenol, to male newborn rats.

Nonylphenol (NP) treatment of neonatal male rat pups decreased the size of their testes, epididymis, seminal vesicle, and ventral prostate, and increased the frequency of cryptorchidism (60.7%, n = 56 vs 0% in vehicle-treated control, n = 58) when examined at 31 d of age. NP effects are dose-dependent. These effects were only seen when NP was given at > or =20.8 mg/kg daily for 15 d. There is a critical period of vulnerability to NP during male reproductive development in the neonatal stage. Changes were found when NPs were given to male pups before 13 d of age, but not when given at > or =13

Normal and abnormal embryonic development of the anorectum in human embryos.

In the literature, some controversy still exists about the normal and abnormal development of the human anorectum. Therefore, a three-dimensional and histological study was performed on human embryos. In early anorectal development (< or = 49 days postfertilization), the cloaca plays a crucial role, separated from the amniotic cavity by its cloacal membrane. In the cloaca, the yolk sac/primitive hindgut and allantois/primitive urogenital sinus enter. During the embryonic caudal folding process, incorporation of these structures occurs, including their surrounding extraembryonic mesoderm, which

Effects of autoantibodies on the course of pregnancy and fetal growth.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of autoantibodies on the course of pregnancy and fetal growth. METHODS: One thousand one hundred seventy-nine healthy women with singleton gestations were screened in early pregnancy for seven kinds of autoantibodies: antithyroid microsomal antibody, antithyroglobulin antibody, two kinds of rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibody, anti-DNA antibody, and antimitochondrial antibody. RESULTS: In 228 cases (19.3%), at least one autoantibody was found; however, overlap of autoantibodies in the same individual was unexpectedly rare, and only two cases were positive

[Features of uterine contractile function in intrauterine fetal death].

Experiments on 528 pregnant rats studied the specific features of uterine contractility in pre- (7.2%), postimplantation (5.69%), and intrauterine (1.14%) fetal deaths and in ablatio placentae (0.57%) which spontaneously occurred in this group of animals. By applying the multiparametric approach and the methods of the image recognition theory, the authors showed that despite its onset periods, fetal deaths resulted in reduced uterine contractility. It is concluded that the present study provides experimental evidence for the development of weak clinical uterine activity in fetal death in diffe
