Emotion Regulation in Schema Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Schema therapy (ST) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) have both shown to be effective treatment methods especially for borderline personality disorder. Both, ST and DBT, have their roots in cognitive behavioral therapy and aim at helping patient to deal with emotional dysregulation. However, there are major differences in the terminology, explanatory models and techniques used in the both methods. This article gives an overview of the major therapeutic techniques used in ST and DBT with respect to emotion regulation and systematically puts them in the context of James Gross' process model

FXR1P is a GSK3β substrate regulating mood and emotion processing.

Inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) is a shared action believed to be involved in the regulation of behavior by psychoactive drugs such as antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. However, little is known about the identity of the substrates through which GSK3β affects behavior. We identified fragile X mental retardation-related protein 1 (FXR1P), a RNA binding protein associated to genetic risk for schizophrenia, as a substrate for GSK3β. Phosphorylation of FXR1P by GSK3β is facilitated by prior phosphorylation by ERK2 and leads to its down-regulation. In contrast, behaviorally effe

Self-Compassion and Responses to Trauma: The Role of Emotion Regulation.

Emerging literature suggests that self-compassion may be an important concept for understanding recovery from the impact of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The present study explored the interconnection among self-compassion, resilience, emotion dysregulation, and PTSD symptom severity in a sample of treatment-seeking women with PTSD. We predicted that self-compassion would be negatively related to PTSD symptom severity and to emotion dysregulation, and positively related to resilience. The results supported our main hypotheses. In addition, emotion dysregulation mediated the

Emotion regulation and posttraumatic stress symptoms: a meta-analysis.

Emotion regulation (ER) has been identified as a critical factor in the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTS; Bardeen, Kumpula, & Orcutt, 2013 [Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 27, 188-196]; Marx & Sloan, 2005 [Behaviour Research and Therapy, 43, 569-583]; Nightingale & Williams, 2000 [British Journal of Clinical Psychology, 39, 243-254]). The current meta-analysis aimed to provide a thorough, quantitative examination of the associations between PTS and several aspects of ER. A search of the PsychINFO database resulted in 2557 titles, of which 57 met full inclusion cr

Trichotillomania and emotion regulation: is symptom severity related to alexithymia?

Previous research on trichotillomania (TTM) has demonstrated an emotion regulation function of hair pulling behavior. One condition that can impede the regulation of emotions is alexithymia. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between the degree of alexithymia and the severity of hair pulling behavior in individuals with TTM. Multiple strategies were used to recruit a sample of 105 participants via the internet. All participants were diagnosed with TTM by an experienced clinician via a subsequent phone-interview. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to test the pot

Cultural and gender differences in emotion regulation: relation to depression.

In the last decade, studies have shown that the use of specific emotion regulation strategies contributes to an increased risk for depression. Past research, however, has overlooked potential cultural and gender differences in emotion regulation. The present study examined the relation between the use of emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms among college students in two different cultures (n=380 in Seoul, Korea; n=384 in Miami, USA). Koreans, compared with American students, reported more frequent use of brooding, whereas Americans reported more anger suppression than Koreans.

Difficulties in emotion regulation across the spectrum of eating disorders.

Theoretical models consider difficulties in emotion regulation (ER) as central trans-diagnostic phenomena across the spectrum of eating disorders (ED). However, there is a lack of studies directly comparing ED subtypes regarding ER problems. Furthermore, patients with anorexia nervosa-restricting type (AN-R) and patients with AN-binge/purge type (AN-BP) have usually been merged into one overall AN group in previous research on ER. In order to overcome these limitations of previous studies, the present study investigated specific ER difficulties in 120 patients with different ED subtypes, inclu

The effects of emotion regulation on the desire to overeat in restrained eaters.

The aim of the present study was to test whether emotion regulation (ER) strategies are underlying processes in the link between negative emotions and the desire to overeat (DTE) in high restrained eaters (HR). Forty-eight female HR and 46 female low restrained eaters (LR) watched three sadness inducing film clips. Thereby, participants were randomly assigned to and trained in one of three conditions while watching the first two clips: to suppress upcoming emotions, to accept upcoming emotions or to reappraise the situation. After that, they participated in an experiment in which the learned E

Emotion regulation in Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism.

It is generally thought that individuals with Asperger's syndrome and high-functioning autism (AS/HFA) have deficits in theory of mind. These deficits have been previously linked to problems with social cognition. However, we reasoned that AS/HFA individuals' Theory of Mind deficits also might lead to problems with emotion regulation. To assess emotional functioning in AS/HFA, 27 AS/HFA adults (16 women) and 27 age-, gender-, and education-matched typically developing (TD) participants completed a battery of measures of emotion experience, labeling, and regulation. With respect to emotion expe

Specificity of cognitive emotion regulation strategies: a transdiagnostic examination.

Despite growing interest in the role of regulatory processes in clinical disorders, it is not clear whether certain cognitive emotion regulation strategies play a more central role in psychopathology than others. Similarly, little is known about whether these strategies have effects transdiagnostically. We examined the relationship between four cognitive emotion regulation strategies (rumination, thought suppression, reappraisal, and problem-solving) and symptoms of three psychopathologies (depression, anxiety, and eating disorders) in an undergraduate sample (N=252). Maladaptive strategies (r

Transdiagnostic emotion regulation processes in bipolar disorder and insomnia.

Research and treatment have traditionally adopted a 'disorder-focused' approach by targeting one specific disorder, aiming to understanding its cause, maintenance and treatment. The aim of the present study was to contribute to the burgeoning interest in examining common, or 'transdiagnostic,' processes across disorders. Three candidate transdiagnostic processes involved in emotion regulation - rumination, worry, and automatic negative thoughts - were examined in euthymic bipolar I disorder (n=21) and insomnia (n=19), and a non-clinical control group (n=20). Rumination and worry were endorsed

The role of emotion regulation in the treatment of child anxiety disorders.

In this review, we examine the role of emotion regulation in the treatment of children with anxiety disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to "work" for children with anxiety disorders and it has been categorized as an evidence-based treatment. However, most studies have shown that the treatment is effective for about 60-70% of children, leaving the remaining children symptomatic and oftentimes with persisting psychological disorders. Of importance, it has also been shown that many children with anxiety disorders demonstrate poor emotion regulation skills. Despite these f

Neurophysiological mechanisms of emotion regulation for subtypes of externalizing children.

Children referred for externalizing behavior problems may not represent a homogeneous population. Our objective was to assess neural mechanisms of emotion regulation that might distinguish subtypes of externalizing children from each other and from their normal age mates. Children with pure externalizing (EXT) problems were compared with children comorbid for externalizing and internalizing (MIXED) problems and with age-matched controls. Only boys were included in the analysis because so few girls were referred for treatment. We used a go/no-go task with a negative emotion induction, and we ex

Harsh parenting in relation to child emotion regulation and aggression.

This study presents a model of harsh parenting that has an indirect effect, as well as a direct effect, on child aggression in the school environment through the mediating process of child emotion regulation. Tested on a sample of 325 Chinese children and their parents, the model showed adequate goodness of fit. Also investigated were interaction effects between parents' and children's gender. Mothers' harsh parenting affected child emotion regulation more strongly than fathers', whereas harsh parenting emanating from fathers had a stronger effect on child aggression. Fathers' harsh parenting

Revisiting Nomophobia: Emotional and Relational Regulation Through Smartphones in Adolescence and Young Adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Smartphone use among adolescents and young adults is often framed as problematic, particularly in relation to nomophobia. However, such perspectives may overlook the developmental and relational contexts in which smartphone use occurs. This study examined how Filipino young people with moderate to severe nomophobia experienced smartphone use within their emotional and relational lives. METHODS: A qualitative multiple-case study, guided by a constructivist perspective, was conducted in 2024 with 12 Filipino participants aged 18-22 years (6 female, 6 male). Participants completed

Sleep, emotional regulation, and limbic-cortical dynamics: From basic mechanisms to clinical translation.

Sleep is an essential biological process regulating emotions and involving interactions between limbic and cortical systems. The amygdala, hippocampus, insula, and anterior cingulate cortex function as a bottom-up network for emotional processing, whereas prefrontal regions control the top-down aspect. Neurophysiological, neurochemical, and network modifications affect these circuits during sleep stages i.e. rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) phases. Sleep deprivation throws this balance out of synchrony, making emotional responsiveness increasingly pronounced and regulation more comp

The association between emotional regulation strategies and mental health outcomes among Malaysian undergraduates.

Emotional regulation (ER) is defined as the ability to manage emotions based on how they are experienced, evaluated, and expressed. ER involves cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES) strategies which are postulated to contribute to depression, anxiety, and stress. This study aims to explore the association between emotional regulation with depression, anxiety and stress among Malaysian undergraduate students. 278 undergraduate students from four faculties of a university in the Klang Valley randomly chosen using an online randomizer participated in an online cross-sectional

ADHD and alcohol: Emotional regulation efforts pay off in quality of life points.

The emotion dysregulation and impulsivity are highly associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD). This study explored the role of impulsivity and emotion dysregulation and the interaction with adult probable ADHD on alcohol-related quality of life (QoL). In this observational trial, we analyzed data from the randomized TRAIN study, which compared efficacy of two cognitive training programs in patients AUD recently detoxified at 5 centers in France from February 2019 to February 2023, and who completed child and adult ADHD screening data (WURS + ARSR, n = 206 of 226). Emotional self-regulation, impulsivity, 5-HTTLPR and tobacco use behavior among psychiatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND: While the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) gene, 5-HTTLPR, interacts with the social environment to influence both emotional self-regulation and smoking behavior, less is known about interactions between emotional self-regulation and 5-HTTLPR or their joint influence on tobacco use. Here, we examined such interactions among psychiatric inpatients, the population with the highest rates of smoking. METHODS: Participants (506 adults) were psychiatric inpatients at The Menninger Clinic in Houston TX between 2012 and 16. Most were white (89%), male (55%), with a mean age of 32.3 years. P

Disgust regulation between menstrual cycle phases: Differential effects of emotional suppression and reappraisal.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Immunosuppression is characteristic of the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and is accompanied by an adaptive disgust response to reduce contact with pathogens. However, research has not examined the effects of emotion regulation on disgust during the menstrual cycle. Accordingly, the present study examines the effect of suppression and reappraisal on disgust during the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle. METHOD: Menstrual cycle phase was estimated in a sample of naturally cycling women (n = 73), and those in the follicular or luteal phase were as
