Janus polymeric discs by seeded swelling emulsion polymerization.

A facile approach is reported on the large-scale synthesis of robust polymeric discs by seeded swelling emulsion polymerization against a PS hollow sphere, which is exemplified by using the monomer mixture of vinyl benzene chloride (VBC) and divinyl benzene (DVB). The interplay between strong phase separation of the in situ synthesized polymer and confined Ostwald ripening within the shell is responsible for the formation of the discs. Selective modification of the crosslinked PVBC (cPVBC) disc is allowed while one side is protected with the polystyrene (PS) shell. The benzyl chloride group at

Emulsion and Emulgel-Based Ophthalmic Drug Delivery Systems.

Ophthalmic drug delivery encounters unique challenges due to the anatomical and physiological ocular barriers, necessitating the development of novel drug delivery systems (NDDSs). This review focuses on emerging therapeutic platforms, including nanoemulsions (NEs), microemulsions (MEs), self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDSs) such as self-nano emulsifying drug delivery systems (SNEDDSs) and self-micro emulsifying drug delivery systems (SMEDDSs), emulgels, and in situ-forming emulgels, as novel strategies for enhancing ocular drug delivery. NEs and MEs, due to their small globule size,

Multiscale tracking of emulsion dynamics by aggregation-induced emission.

The inherent multiscale dynamics of materials necessitate synchronous cross-scale investigation, while traditional multiplatform methods always encounter low operational efficiency and analytical uncertainty. Herein, we try to address these limitations by developing a unified monitoring strategy through aggregation-induced emission fluorogens (AIEgens), whose high-contrast photoluminescence (PL) activation triggered by restricted intramolecular motion (RIM) enables multiscale correlation. Molecular-level analysis with AIEgens reveals ultrasensitive PL transitions during emulsion-to-film evolut

[The place of ciclosporin A cationic emulsion 0.1% in the therapy of xerophthalmia].

Dry eye disease (DED) is pathogenetically based on inflammation of the ocular surface. A step-by-step approach to DED treatment involves early initiation of anti-inflammatory therapy, including instillation of cyclosporine A (CsA). However, recommendations for the use of topical CsA in clinical practice are limited. This article presents an expert consensus on practical recommendations for the management of patients with DED, including indications, time of initiation and duration of CsA therapy, comparison of CsA forms currently registered in the Russian Federation, as well as issues of patien

Controllable enzymatic hydrolysis in reverse Janus emulsion microreactors.

HYPOTHESIS: The key feature of living cells is multicompartmentalization for enzymatic reactions. Artificial cell-like multicompartments with micro domains are appealing to mimic the biological counterparts. In addition, establishing a sustainable, efficient, and controllable reaction system for enzymatic hydrolysis is imperative for the production of natural fatty acids from animal and plant-based fats. EXPERIMENTS: Reverse Janus emulsion microreactors, i.e. (W1 + W2)/O, is constructed through directly using natural fats as continuous phase and aqueous two-phase solutions (ATPS) as inner pha

Antibacterial thyme oil-loaded zwitterionic emulsion hydrogels.

Emulsion hydrogels are structurally composite materials combining the advantages of emulsions and hydrogels with the ability to accommodate hydrophobic and hydrophilic components in one system. It is a promising strategy for the excellent encapsulation and delivery of many bioactive ingredients. In this work, the thyme oil-loaded zwitterionic emulsion hydrogels are constructed by the cellulose acetoacetate-horseradish peroxidase-hydrogen peroxide-initiated (CAA-HRP-H2O2-initiated) ternary enzyme-mediated polymerization of the thyme oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions stabilized by cellulose acetoacet

Scalable production of double emulsion drops with thin shells.

Double emulsions are often used as containers to perform high throughput screening assays and as templates for capsules. These applications require double emulsions to be mechanically stable such that they do not coalesce during processing and storage. A possibility to increase their stability is to reduce the thickness of their shells to sufficiently low values that lubrication effects hinder coalescence. However, the controlled fabrication of double emulsions with such thin shells is difficult. Here, we introduce a new microfluidic device, the aspiration device, that reduces the shell thickn

Immunotherapeutic Potential of Eugenol Emulsion in Experimental Visceral Leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: The therapy of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is limited by resistance, toxicity and decreased bioavailability of the existing drugs coupled with dramatic increase in HIV-co-infection, non-availability of vaccines and down regulation of cell-mediated immunity (CMI). Thus, we envisaged combating the problem with plant-derived antileishmanial drug that could concomitantly mitigate the immune suppression of the infected hosts. Several plant-derived compounds have been found to exert leishmanicidal activity via immunomodulation. In this direction, we investigated the antileishmanial activ

Intralipid emulsion treatment as an antidote in lipophilic drug intoxications.

Intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) is a lifesaving treatment of lipophilic drug intoxications. Not only does ILE have demonstrable efficacy as an antidote to local anesthetic toxicity, it is also effective in lipophilic drug intoxications. Our case series involved 10 patients with ingestion of different types of lipophilic drugs. Intravenous lipid emulsion treatment improved Glasgow Coma Scale or blood pressure and pulse rate or both according to the drug type. Complications were observed in 2 patients (minimal change pancreatitis and probable ILE treatment-related fat infiltration in lungs). In

[Treatment of scalp psoriasis. An effective and safe tacalcitol emulsion].

BACKGROUND: The scalp is a problematic area in psoriasis where treatment is often difficult. The lesions often extend beyond the hairline to involve the forehead, neck and sensitive facial skin. Topical corticosteroids and potentially irritant topical preparations have only limited utility in these sensitive areas. Most of the patients additionally suffer from psychosocial problems due to the visibility of lesions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind study, was to assess efficacy, safety and tolerability of once daily tacalcitol emulsion (4 micro g/g)

Salicylate binding by human albumin in the presence of a perfluorochemical emulsion.

The binding of 43 and 216 micrograms/ml sodium salicylate by a perfluorochemical emulsion, by human albumin, and by their mixtures, has been examined at ambient room temperature. Sodium salicylate was chosen as a model drug since it is bound by both sites I and II on human albumin. The concentration of free salicylate was determined through standard centrifugation followed by supernatant ultrafiltration. Sodium salicylate was weakly bound by the perfluorochemical emulsion droplets through an interaction with the emulsifiers. This binding was independent of salicylate concentration. Sodium sali
