Evaluation of the CDC gravid trap for the surveillance of St. Louis encephalitis vectors in Memphis, Tennessee.

Collections with CDC Gravid Mosquito Traps on 954 trap-nights from May through September 1983 are compared to 2,608 concurrent resting site collections made in the same area of Memphis, Tennessee. Gravid Traps yielded 88 times more Culex per collection and 96 times more Culex per man hour. The total Gravid Trap catch was 135,724 mosquitoes, 99% of which were either Culex pipiens or Cx. restuans, whereas these species comprised only 63% of the 6,613 mosquitoes collected from resting sites. Gravid Traps also collected significant numbers of Aedes aegypti and Ae. triseriatus. On most nights, more

Concurrent evaluation of epidemic St. Louis encephalitis: are you on the upward or downward side of the curve?

Laboratory confirmation of reported cases of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) lags 2-4 weeks behind onset of illness. A review of our experience in Mississippi in 1975 and 1976 suggests that plotting the number of reported suspects greater than or equal to 50 years of age by date of onset and adjusting for reporting delays can help determine when the peak of the epidemic has passed. This method circumvents the obligatory delay of serologic tests, minimizes the bias of publicity and intensive surveillance, and may avoid promoting control procedure which are expensive, dangerous, and of uncertain ef

Experiments on the role of the chicken mite, Dermanyssus gallinae. and the mosquito in the epidemiology of St. Louis encephalitis.

The present experimental results concern primarily the question, whether or not mosquitoes feeding on chickens having viremia, as a result of the bite of infected mites, can acquire the virus of St. Louis encephalitis and whether or not mosquitoes thus infected, can transmit the virus to chickens and hamsters. During the course of the investigation, 7 species of mosquitoes of 3 genera were infected with the virus in one or two or all of three ways: by feeding on a suspension of infected mouse brain tissue, by feeding on chickens in which viremia had been produced by subcutaneous inoculation of

Surveillance for Western Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, and West Nile Viruses Using Reverse Transcription Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification.

Collection of mosquitoes and testing for vector-borne viruses is a key surveillance activity that directly influences the vector control efforts of public health agencies, including determining when and where to apply insecticides. Vector control districts in California routinely monitor for three human pathogenic viruses including West Nile virus (WNV), Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV), and St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV). Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) offers highly sensitive and specific detection of these three viruses in a single multipl

Evaluation of Argentinean Bird Species as Amplifying Hosts for St. Louis Encephalitis Virus (Flavivirus, Flaviviridae).

St.Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is an emerging human pathogen flavivirus in Argentina. Recently, it has reemerged in the United States. We evaluated the role as amplifying host of six resident bird species and analyzed their capacity as host during the 2005 encephalitis outbreak of SLEV in Córdoba. Eared Dove, Picui Ground Dove, and House Sparrow were the three species with highest host competence index. At a city level, Eared Dove and Picui Ground Dove were the most important amplifying hosts during the 2005 SLEV human outbreak in Córdoba city. This finding highlighted important difference

First genome sequence of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) isolated from a human in Brazil.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, is a causative agent of encephalitis in the Americas. In Brazil, sporadic cases of SLEV infection have been reported since 1953, but the first outbreak of SLEV in Brazil was identified only in 2007, concomitant with an outbreak of dengue virus (DENV) serotype 3. This finding, along with other reports, indicates that SLEV circulation in Brazil is largely unknown, and there may be epidemiological implications of the co-circulation of SLEV, DENV and other flaviviruses in Brazil. Here, we describe the first

[Serological evidence of St. Louis encephalitis virus circulation in birds from Buenos Aires City, Argentina].

Our goal was to determine the presence of neutralizing antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) in sera of wild and domestic birds from Buenos Aires City, Argentina. From October 2012 to April 2013, 180 samples were collected and processed by the microneutralization technique. A 7.2% of the sampled birds were seropositive for SLEV, while no seropositive birds for WNV were detected.

Severe winter freezes enhance St. Louis encephalitis virus amplification and epidemic transmission in peninsular Florida.

Mosquito-borne arboviral epidemics tend to strike without warning. The driving force for these epidemics is a combination of biotic (vector, amplification host, and virus) and abiotic (meteorological conditions, especially rainfall and temperature) factors. Abiotic factors that facilitate the synchronization and interaction of vector and amplification host populations favor epidemic amplification and transmission. In Florida, epidemics of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, SLEV) have been preceded by major freezes one or two winters before the onset of h

Vertical transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus to autogenously developed eggs of Aedes atropalpus mosquitoes.

Vertical transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus was demonstrated by a strain of Aedes atropalpus mosquitoes from Garrett County, MD. Five-day-old parental females containing fully formed autogenous eggs were infected by intrathoracic inoculation. St. Louis encephalitis virus was detected in batches of fertilized eggs and fourth instar larvae. Estimated filial infection rates of approximately 1% were observed for both eggs and larvae.

EXPERIMENTAL ENCEPHALITIS (ST. LOUIS TYPE) IN MICE WITH HIGH INBORN RESISTANCE : A CHRONIC SUBCLINICAL INFECTION.

1. St. Louis encephalitis virus injected intracerebrally or intraperitoneally in maximum doses in resistant mice is distributed and is effective in a manner generally similar to that in susceptible mice. The minimum infecting dose is at least 1,000 times greater in resistant than susceptible mice and virus injected in the brain tends to remain at a relatively low titre, persist for a few days, and then disappear. 2. Virus dropped in the nares is demonstrable and progresses in the brains of resistant mice as in susceptible mice, but does not increase in titre beyond the 5th day, does not bring

Seroprevalence of St. Louis encephalitis virus and West Nile virus (Flavivirus, Flaviviridae) in horses, Uruguay.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) and West Nile virus (WNV) belong to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex (Flavivirus genus, Flaviviridae family). They show antigenic close relationships and share many similarities in their ecology. Both are responsible for serious human diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of neutralizing antibodies to these viruses in horses from Uruguay. To do this, 425 horse sera were collected in 2007 and analyzed by plaque reduction neutralization tests. As a result, 205 sera (48.2%) were found positive for SLEV, with titers ranging b

Vertical transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus in Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Córdoba, Argentina.

Arbovirus vector transmission is interrupted when vector abundance decreases or disappears in temperate regions during the winter season. Although the primary overwintering mechanism for many arboviruses in nature remains unknown, vertical transmission is one potential mechanism. Vertical transmission functions as an overwintering mechanism for St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) in temperate areas of Argentina, where SLEV is endemic. The aim of this project was to detect vertical transmission of SLEV in Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. Under laboratory conditions, SLEV vertical transmission

Antibody prevalence of St. Louis encephalitis virus in avian hosts in Los Angeles, California, 1986.

A study was conducted to determine the pattern of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus activity in the avian populations of the Los Angeles metropolitan area in 1986. In total, 679 birds of 42 species were captured at 7 study sites. The overall prevalence of SLE neutralizing (N) antibody of 3% indicated enzootic transmission. Antibody prevalences were higher in birds sampled in the central part of the metropolitan area, which was consistent with other epidemiologic data. The use of specific avian species as sentinels for future surveillance of SLE virus activity was suggested.
