Adenomatoid tumor of the male genitourinary tract is a rare benign neoplasm thought to be of mesothelial origin. In exceptional cases, these lesions may involve the testicular parenchyma, of which there are only 9 published cases in the literature. The authors describe a rare case of a testicular tumor in a 41-year-old male with normal tumor markers. Histopathology and immunohistochemical studies revealed an adenomatoid tumor with intratesticular growth. No involvement of the epididymis or testicular membranes was identified. The morphological clues leading to the correct diagnosis of adenomat

Germinative-cell tumors are the most common tumors of the testis in children. For a period of 15 years (1975-1989) the authors have observed 12 children with these tumors. Leading symptoms in all children was a gradual painless enlargement of one testis; the symptomatic hydrocele may delay the correct diagnosis for several months. In young children the mothers noticed the testicular changes earlier, while in older children the diagnosis was delayed. Three quarters of the tumors were in the left testis, seldom in the right and still more seldom bilaterally. Diagnostic methods were applied mostl

Most pineal region masses are malignant germ cell neoplasms that occur in young male patients. The most common is a germinoma, which is a homogeneous mass with signal intensity and attenuation similar to those of gray matter; the mass engulfs a densely calcified pineal gland. Teratomas are multilocular heterogeneous masses containing lipid areas. Other types of pineal region masses include choriocarcinoma, endodermal sinus tumor, and embryonal carcinoma. Pineal parenchymal neoplasms are usually either pineocytomas or pineoblastomas, which may "explode" preexisting pineal calcifications. Unlike

Prepubertal testis tumours (T.T) are rare, with different characteristics and clinical course to adults and with a better prognosis. The authors report the experience of Maria Pia Hospital's over a 15 year period. There were 8 cases of T.T.: 3 Yolk sac tumours, 3 teratomas, 1 Leydig cell tumour and 1 epidermoide cyst. All patients are submitted to an inguinal orchiectomy. Follow-up ranged between six months and 14 years. There was no recurrence of the disease in seven patients are without disease recurrence. Mortality was nil.

Four cases of primary hepatoid yolk sac tumors of the anterior mediastinum are described. The patients were all men between the ages of 26 and 40 years (median 33). Clinically, they all presented with a history of shortness of breath and chest pain of several weeks' duration. None of the patients had a history of germ cell tumor elsewhere or evidence of any hepatic abnormality. Grossly, all the tumors were described as large mediastinal masses that impinged on adjacent structures. Histologically, they were characterized by sheets of medium-sized, round to polygonal neoplastic cells with modera

Sarcomatoid yolk sac tumor is a very rare histologic type of testicular germ cell tumor and is mainly reported in testicular germ cell tumor patients who receive chemotherapy. Herein, we report an extremely rare concurrent retroperitoneal sarcomatoid yolk sac tumor in a man with a testicular postpuberal teratoma before he received chemotherapy. A 37-year-old man initially presented with a persistent abdominal pain. Subsequent imaging studies revealed a 9.6-cm retroperitoneal mass, and 2 testicular masses (3.1 cm and 0.9 cm in greatest dimension, respectively). His serum tumor markers were with

AIMS: Yolk sac tumour postpubertal-type (YSTpt) shows a wide range of histological patterns and is challenging to diagnose. Recently, forkhead box transcription factor A2 (FoxA2) emerged as a driver of YSTpt formation and a promising marker for diagnosing YSTpt. However, FoxA2 has not been tested in the different patterns of YSTpt. This study aimed to assess the staining pattern of FoxA2 in te different patterns of YSTpt and other germ cell tumours of the testis (GCTT), comparing it with glypican-3 (GPC3) and α-fetoprotein (AFP).
METHODS AND RESULTS: FOXA2, GPC3 and AFP immunohistochemistry w

We present the clinicopathologic features of 15 cases of extragonadal yolk sac tumor (EGYST) detected in female patients and reviewed at our institution from 1988 to 2016. We recorded: patient age, clinical presentation, tumor location, FIGO stage (where applicable), histologic patterns including presence/absence of Schiller-Duval bodies, other germ cell or somatic components, immunoperoxidase results, treatment, and outcome. Patients' ages ranged from 17 to 87 (median, 62) years and presentation included: abnormal uterine bleeding, 12; hematuria, 1; labial mass, 1; abdominal pain, 1. Primary

This article provides a comprehensive review of the current literature and summarizes the experience of the German cooperative protocols for nontesticular germ cell tumors (MAKEI) on the use of alpha 1-fetoprotein (AFP) and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) for diagnostic evaluation in pediatric oncology. Based on this evaluation, this review proposes guidelines for the initial diagnostic work-up for children with clinically suspected secreting tumors. AFP and beta-hCG represent the characteristic tumor markers of malignant epithelial liver tumors and malignant germ cell tumors (GCT

CONTEXT: Pure post-pubertal yolk sac tumors (YSTs) are an extremely rare type of malignant germ cell tumor (GCT) that account for <1 % of testicular GCTs. Clinically, they are more aggressive compared to the more common pre-pubertal counterpart. The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical presentation, ancillary tests and clinical outcomes in addition to presenting a spectrum of histomorphological features, in a case series along with a literature review.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of 4 cases of pure post-pubertal YST of the testis was performed. Data collected for each patient inclu

Vaginal yolk sac tumors are rare pediatric malignant tumors and the most common form of vaginal germ-cell tumors in children. They are almost exclusively found in females under 3 years of age. Treatment involves local excision either with or without chemotherapy. Herein, we describe a case of a 3-year-old girl with vaginal Yolk sac tumor, who underwent buccal mucosa vaginoplasty through an anterior sagittal transrectal approach , as an effective oncological procedure, with preservation of reproductive function.

Yolk sac tumors (YSTs) are rare malignant germ cell tumors that usually affect young females. To date, there have been few studies on YSTs. We evaluated the relationship between clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with ovarian YSTs and disease outcome based on Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used to evaluate differences in survival rates. Data for 269 patients were analyzed. The incidence of YSTs among ovarian germ cell tumors (OGCTs) cases was 0.4%; median patient age was 22.0 years, and most tumors were unilateral. Pa

BACKGROUND Existing literature has detailed occurrences of retroperitoneal yolk sac tumors (YSTs) as the result of metastasis from a primary gonadal site. However, primary retroperitoneal YSTs are extremely rare, thus remaining a challenge to diagnose and treat. We present a complex case of a large primary retroperitoneal YST in a man treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical resection. CASE REPORT A 31-year-old man presented with a chief symptom of severe lower abdominal pain. Diagnostic imaging revealed a large, rapidly progressing neoplasm in the retroperitoneal region, ini

Intracranial germ cell tumors have an estimated incidence of 0.4-3.4% in the Western Hemisphere. Patients can present with a variety of differing clinical signs and symptoms including headache, nausea/vomiting, hydrocephalus, obtundation, pyramidal tract signs, ataxia, and hypothalamic/pituitary dysfunction. Rarely germ cell tumors can transform into alternative malignancy. In these cases, treatment options may be difficult. Metastasis to the brain is not uncommon in germ cell tumors and is frequently reported within the pineal region; however, they are less common intraventricularly, within t

Yolk sac tumor (YST) is a rare and highly malignant germ cell tumor that is extremely rare in the nasal region. Herein, we present a case of biopsy-proven nasal YST admixed with transitional cell carcinoma in a 58-year-old woman. Complementary F-FDG PET/CT revealed the only FDG-avid mass in the right nasal cavity. This case indicates that YST could occur in the nasal region primarily, and F-FDG PET/CT is a useful tool to distinguish between primary and metastatic lesions.

INTRODUCTION: In children, malignant tumors presenting as a calvarial mass that too as initial manifestation are unusual. Also, brain metastases per se are rare in pediatric solid tumors with an incidence of just 1.5%.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a child with calvarial metastasis which was the presenting symptom of an otherwise asymptomatic large malignant mediastinal germ cell tumor (GCT). The lesion was dural-based involving both calvaria as well as the underlying brain parenchyma. Despite such multicompartmental location, no obvious bony destruction was seen. A 12-year-old boy presented w

We recently experienced an 87-yr-old man with gastric yolk sac tumor. Preoperative diagnosis was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma in the cardia of stomach without apparent metastasis. A total gastrectomy was performed. The precise histological examination after surgery revealed the tumor was composed of pure gastric yolk sac tumor without adenocarcinomatous components. The surgical margin and the resected lymph nodes were histologically negative for the tumor and a curative resection was performed. Five months after the operation, enlargement of the intraabdominal lymph nodes occurred with

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of a 21-year-old man who presented with the unusual symptoms of heart failure and was found to have an anterior mediastinal yolk sac tumor.
METHODS: A review of the literature using the Ovid search engine was performed.
RESULTS: The patient was treated with the current standard of neoadjuvant chemotherapy: bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) with marked reduction in tumor size, followed by en bloc surgical resection. The final pathology revealed teratoma with malignant change: chondrosarcoma, adenocarcinoma, and poorly differentiated sarcoma.
CONCLUSIONS: T
