Appendicitis-like clinical image elicited by Enterobius vermicularis: case report and review of the literature.

A 17-year-old female patient presented with the clinical features of an acute appendicitis. During laparoscopic exploration a macroscopically normal appendix was found. Since there were no intra-abdominal abnormalities found, the appendix was resected. Anatomopathology demonstrated Enterobius vermicularis, a pinworm infecting only humans, and mostly living in the caecum. This parasite is responsible for possibly the most common helminthic infection in the developed world. Its role in the pathogenesis of acute appendicitis is controversial, but more recent studies indicate a stronger associatio

Enterobius Vermicularis infection of the appendix as a cause of acute appendicitis in a Greek adolescent: a case report.

Gastrointestinal infection due to Enterobius vermicularis occurs worldwide and is considered to be the most common helminth infection. The simple presence of E. vermicularis in the appendix usually produces symptoms of acute appendicitis. The association of this parasitic infestation with acute appendicitis varies from 0.2%-41.8% worldwide. We present a case of a 15 year old female with enterobiasis of appendix presented with clinical features of acute appendicitis. The appendix was surgically removed and the specimen was pathologically diagnosed to contain of E. vermicularis in non-inflamed a

Detection of Enterobius vermicularis eggs in the submucosa of the transverse colon of a man presenting with colon carcinoma.

We report a case of a chronic infiltrate of the intestinal wall of the transverse colon by the eggs of Enterobius vermicularis in a man who had immigrated to Taiwan from mainland China 50 years ago. During surgery for suspected transverse colon carcinoma, histologic examination of the tumor mass revealed eggs of E. vermicularis embedded in granulation tissue in the submucosa of the transverse colon. Results of a stool examination were negative for eggs but strongly positive for occult blood. The mass in the transverse colon was completely removed during surgery. At the present time, the patien

Allergic disease and the infestation of Enterobius vermicularis in Swedish children 4-10 years of age.

BACKGROUND: The possible association between certain childhood infections and the propensity to develop allergic disease may include intestinal helminth infections. The experiences of such associations derive mainly from studies in tropical areas, and the results are not clear-cut. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between Enterobius vermicularis and allergic disease in Swedish children 4 to 10 years of age. METHOD: The occurrence of E. vermicularis was examined by perianal tape tests in 70 allergic children recovered from a pediatric register of positive skin-prick tests. A nonallergic

Pelvic abscess from enterobius vermicularis. Report of a case with cytologic detection of eggs and worms.

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is known to produce perianal and ischioanal abscesses and invade the peritoneal cavity via the female reproductive system, causing pelvic peritonitis. However, there are only rare case reports on the cytodiagnosis of these parasitic lesions. CASE: A 28-year-old woman was admitted with a tender left iliac fossa mass and greenish vaginal discharge. Ultrasonogram and computed tomography scan confirmed the presence of a mass lesion suggestive of a tuboovarian abscess. Cytologic examination of the pus obtained during left salpingo-oophorectomy revealed the prese

Enterobius vermicularis infection is well controlled among preschool children in nurseries of Taipei City, Taiwan.

INTRODUCTION: Whether Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm) infections among preschool children in Taipei City had truly declined was investigated. METHODS: A total of 6,661 preschool children from 28 nurseries were randomly selected from 4 major geographic districts in Taipei City to examine the status of pinworm infection by using adhesive thin cellophane tape swab method. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of pinworm infection was 0.5% (30/6,661). Boys (0.6%; 21/3,524) had higher prevalence than girls (0.3%; 9/3,137) (p=0.06). Southern district (0.6%; 10/1,789) showed insignificantly higher prev

[Enterobius vermicularis in preschool children from a suburban area in San Félix, Bolívar State, Venezuela].

To determine the enterobiosis prevalence in preschool children, a study was carried out from may-july 2003, in the SEU "Teresa de la Parra" in San Félix, Bolívar State, Venezuela. Three samples from the perianal region were obtained from every child, by applying the Graham method, and one sample was obtained of the subungucal deposit by scraping and cutting off their finger nails. These samples were preserved in 10% formol and processed by the formol-ether method. Also, a stool sample was collected and analyzed by direct examination and the formol-ether method. The prevalence of Enterobius ver

Enterobius vermicularis infection among children aged 1-8 years in a rural area in Malaysia.

The infection rate and relationship of enterobiasis with socio-economic status were determined in children aged 1-8 years, living in a rural area in Malaysia. Of the 178 subjects 40.4% were infected with Enterobius vermicularis. The distribution of enterobiasis among these children were analyzed in relation to age groups and sex. The rate of infection was significantly higher in older children (5-7 years). The association of enterobiasis with other factors studied such as number of persons per house, household income per months and mother's employment status were not significant. The sensitivi

Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) in children and adults: a practice-oriented narrative review and household-school algorithm.

Enterobiasis (pinworm infection), caused by the nematode Enterobius vermicularis, remains among the most common helminth infections worldwide and disproportionately affects children and caregivers in households and institutional settings. Despite its high prevalence, practical guidance is often fragmented across primary care, pediatrics, and public-health sources. We conducted a SANRA-guided, clinician-oriented narrative review synthesizing evidence on the epidemiology and psychosocial burden of enterobiasis, transmission dynamics in households and educational settings, best available diagnost

Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the appendix mimicking acute appendicitis in a young Italian boy Case report.

Enterobius Vermicularis (EV) is the most commonly identified heminth incidentally found within the appendix of a clinically diagnosed appendicitis. This simple presence of EV may cause appendicular colic, primarily affecting children, it is an important cause of negative appendicectomy. We report a case of a young male who presented with clinical features of acute appendicitis. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was uneventful and pathologic examination revealed the presence of an EV infestation originating from the lumen of his vermiform appendix. Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the appendix and management at the time of laparoscopic appendectomy: case series and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Enterobius vermicularis infestation of the vermiform appendix can mimic appendicitis. In these cases, laparoscopic appendicectomy runs a risk of contamination of the peritoneal cavity with worms. We reviewed our practice to suggest changes that will reduce the release of worms and propose methods to use in case contamination occurs. METHODS: 498 patients underwent appendicectomy over a sixty-three month period. 13 (2.6%) patients had confirmed E. vermicularis on histology of whom 6 (46%) were performed laparoscopically. These patients' case notes were retrospectively reviewed.

[Diagnosis of and anthelminthic therapy for enterobius vermicularis infections during pregnancy: review of the literature and case report].

Intestinal infection due to the pinworm Enterobius vermicularis is the most prevalent helminthiasis in Europe and North America. Humans are the only known reservoir and young children are most often affected. The disease is highly contagious and is transmitted via the faecal-oral route. Insufficient hand hygiene, contaminated bed linens and clothes may play a role in transmission. Clinical symptoms often encompass severe nocturnal anal pruritus, when female worms deposit an abundance of eggs in the perianal region. The infection is diagnosed by applying an adhesive tape on the perianal region,

Evaluation of lactophenol cotton blue stain for detection of eggs of Enterobius vermicularis in perianal surface samples.

A lacto-phenol cotton blue (LPCB) stain for detecting eggs of Enterobius vermicularis in perianal surface samples was evaluated prospectively. Two hundred children treated in the paediatrics ward and outpatients department of Jipmer Hospital in Pondicherry were studied. From each child two anal surface samples were collected by Scotch cellophane tape method. One cellophane tape containing anal surface samples was pressed against surface of the glass slide containing a drop of LPCB while another cellophane tape was placed on a clean glass slide without adding any LPCB. Both the specimens from e

The presence of pinworms (Enterobius sp.) in the mesenteric lymph nodes, liver and lungs of a chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes.

This report describes a case of fatal enterobiasis caused by Enterobius sp. in the mesenteric lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels of mesentery, blood vessels of the liver and lungs of a chimpanzee from Qingdao Zoo, China. Based on pathological findings, it is likely that the pinworms obtained access to these organs via the lymphatic or haematogenous pathway. As far as we are aware, this is the first reported case of Enterobius sp. in the mesenteric lymph nodes and blood vessels of the lungs and veins of the hepatic triad in a chimpanzee.

Evidence for predisposition in humans to infection with Ascaris, hookworm, Enterobius and Trichuris in a South Indian fishing community.

Studies of patterns of reinfection with four species of intestinal nematodes (Ascaris, hookworm, Trichuris and Enterobius) in 174 individual patients following chemotherapeutic treatment revealed statistical evidence for predisposition to heavy or light infection (relative to the average level in the overall population). Analyses of associations between the abundances of the four species of nematodes within a combined sample of 525 worm burdens showed significant correlations between 5 out of the 6 possible pair-wise comparisons between species. The relevance of these results to the design of
