Intensive rotational grazing assists control of gastrointestinal nematodosis of sheep in a cool temperate environment with summer-dominant rainfall.

While rotational grazing methods have an accepted role in the management of gastrointestinal nematodosis (GIN) of small ruminants in humid tropical regions, their efficacy and application in cool temperate regions is more controversial. This study evaluated GIN over 2 years in three classes of fine wool Merino sheep (lambs, hoggets and ewes) under three different sheep management systems in a cool tableland environment near Armidale NSW Australia (950m altitude, 30 degrees 31'S, 151 degrees 39'E). The management systems were High input (HI) with high fertiliser inputs, a target of 100% sown pa

Atopy, home environment and the risk of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes: a population-based case-control study.

Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is one of the main factors that cause neonatal severe neurologic impairment and death. Shown by a large number of studies, caspase-1 plays a significant effect in diseases such as hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) and may be a key component of the protein complex that initiates PANoptosis. VX-765, an inhibitor of caspase-1, exerts a potential neuroprotective effect in traumatic brain injury. However, it is unknown whether the administration of VX-765 has neuroprotective effects on neonatal rats that suffered HIBD, and if so, the underlying mechanisms are also

Ecologies of complexity: Tropical environments, African trypanosomiasis, and the science of disease control in British colonial Africa, 1900-1940.

Tropical Africa was one of the last regions of the world to experience formal European colonialism, a process that coincided with the advent of a range of new scientific specialties and research methods. The history of British attempts to understand and control African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in cattle), following the intense human epidemics that broke out between 1895 and 1910, reveals hitherto ignored scientific research in the fields of ecology, epidemiology, and tropical medicine that helped produce a new understanding of the "ecology of disease." Adaptive-Slack Prescribed-Performance Control: Achieving Safe Trajectory Tracking in Cluttered Environments via Reinforcement Learning.

Achieving high-precision trajectory tracking while ensuring collision avoidance presents a fundamental conflict for autonomous systems operating in cluttered environments. Traditional prescribed-performance control (PPC) imposes rigid shrinking funnels that may become infeasible during avoidance maneuvers, whereas soft penalty-based avoidance may sacrifice tracking recovery. To resolve this dilemma, this article proposes an adaptive-slack Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB)-based integral reinforcement learning (IRL) framework with an explicit control-barrier-function quadratic-programming (CBF-QP)

Correlation between calcium levels and coronary microvascular disease in high-altitude environments: nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary microvascular disease (CMVD) is an emerging concern under high-altitude hypoxia, but data on modifiable correlates are scarce. Serum calcium regulates vascular tone and coagulation, making it a plausible candidate marker. However, its association with CMVD at high altitude has not been systematically examined. METHODS: This nested case-control study enrolled 1,175 participants undergoing high-altitude training at 3,000-3,500 m. Participants were classified into CMVD and non-CMVD groups based on electrocardiogram (ECG) screening and coronary flow reserve (CFR ≤ 2.3) confir

Aquatic Therapy as a Programmable Multisensory Environment for Arousal and Postural Control After Severe Acquired Brain Injury: A Perspective.

Background/Objectives: Severe acquired brain injury (sABI) disrupts early rehabilitation because arousal fluctuates, trunk control is fragile, and agitation limits therapy tolerance; land-based practice is frequently constrained by fall risk and staffing. We aim to reframe aquatic therapy as a programmable multisensory environment to stabilize arousal and support axial alignment before conventional impairment targets are feasible. Here, programmable denotes the deliberate titration and reporting of water depth, turbulence or perturbation, temperature, body orientation, and flotation and manual

[Dynamic Assessment and Zonal Control of Ecological Environment Quality in the Upstream Region of the Honghe River Basin Based on MRSEI].

The Honghe River is an important international river originating in Yunnan, serving as an ecological barrier for the province, and is a meeting point for the dry-hot valley's fragile zone and ecological corridor. Within the region, biodiversity coexists with ecological issues such as soil erosion and rocky desertification. A systematic analysis assesses the spatial differentiation and temporal changes in the ecological environment quality of the watershed and the driving factors, thereby proposing zoning control measures, which is significant for establishing Yunnan as a national leader in eco

Strategies used by tobacco companies to circumvent tobacco-control regulations across regulatory environments - a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality worldwide despite the implementation of comprehensive tobacco control measures under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Regulatory interventions such as advertising restrictions, plain or standardised packaging, taxation, smoke-free legislation, flavour restrictions and regulation of electronic nicotine delivery systems have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing tobacco consumption. The tobacco industry has consistently developed adaptive strategies to circumvent, delay, weaken or undermine th

Impact of Controlled Breathing Techniques in Virtual Reality Environments on the Psychological Status of Oral Cancer Patients: A Case Report.

Oral cancer is among the six most common cancers worldwide. It is associated with a poor prognosis, delayed clinical diagnosis, absence of a clear biomarker, and expensive treatment choices. It is a serious health risk. Among people with cancer, increased stress and low mood are prevalent psychological issues. One of the most intriguing new technologies for treating anxiety and depression in the clinical setting may be virtual reality (VR). VR has recently emerged as a fascinating remedy for many symptoms in place of conventional exposure-based treatments. Immersion in a virtual world created

Feasibility of using combined EMG and kinematic signals for prosthesis control: A simulation study using a virtual reality environment.

Transhumeral amputation has a significant effect on a person's independence and quality of life. Myoelectric prostheses have the potential to restore upper limb function, however their use is currently limited due to lack of intuitive and natural control of multiple degrees of freedom. The goal of this study was to evaluate a novel transhumeral prosthesis controller that uses a combination of kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) signals recorded from the person's proximal humerus. Specifically, we trained a time-delayed artificial neural network to predict elbow flexion/extension and forearm

The structuring of occupational stressors in a Post-Fordist work environment. Moving beyond traditional accounts of demand, control and support.

In this study, the traditional components of the Demand-Control-Support-Model are extended with a broad number of occupational stressors, while investigating associations with persistent fatigue, musculoskeletal complaints and emotional well-being. Furthermore, it is assessed how these stressors are structured into distinct dimensions within a population of wage-earners. In a representative cross-sectional sample of 11,099 Flemish (Belgian) employees a range of loglinear techniques is used: logit modelling, latent class analysis and Modified LISREL-modelling. Quantitative, emotional and physic

Stair-Fall Risk Parameters in a Controlled Gait Laboratory Environment and Real (Domestic) Houses: A Prospective Study in Faller and Non-Faller Groups.

BACKGROUND: Falling on stairs is a major health hazard for older people. Risk factors for stair falls have been identified, but these are mostly examined in controlled biomechanics/gait laboratory environments, on experimental stairs with a given set of step dimensions. It remains unknown whether the conclusions drawn from these controlled environments would apply to the negotiation of other domestic staircases with different dimensions in real houses where people live. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this paper is to investigate whether selected biomechanical stepping behavior determined through stai

Control of Airborne and Surface Microorganisms in Real Indoor Environments Using an Integrated System of Vaporized Free Chlorine Components and Filtration.

Airborne and surface-residing microorganisms in indoor environments pose potential risks for infectious disease transmission. To address this issue, we developed a composite device combining a generator of vaporized free chlorine components with a fine particle removal filter. Field tests were conducted in occupied university classrooms to evaluate the device's efficacy in reducing airborne bacterial loads. Airborne bacteria were sampled under three operational conditions [Electrolyzed (+)/Filter (+), Electrolyzed (-)/Filter (+), and Electrolyzed (-)/Filter (-)]. Significant reductions in bact

Associations of neighborhood greenspace, and active living environments with autism spectrum disorders: A matched case-control study in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence links early life residential exposure to natural urban environmental attributes and positive health outcomes in children. However, few studies have focused on their protective effects on the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of neighborhood greenspace, and active living environments during pregnancy with ASD in young children (≤6 years). METHODS: We conducted a population-based matched case-control study of singleton term births in Ontario, Canada for 2012-2016. The ASD and environmental data was g
