The paper presents the observations on a female patient with congenital cataract, oligophrenia, unsteady gait, low muscular strength, diminished osteotendinous reflexes. The patient has an under normally developed intellect, dysarthria, epileptic crises. Her speaking practice is bad, she also has tropical disturbances, genu valgum, shortening of the fingers of the right hand, kyphoscoliosis. The clinical signs integrate the observations with the Marinescu-Sjogren syndrome. The case is interesting because of the association of the epilepsy with this syndrome.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is characterized by transient and recurrent involuntary movements that are triggered by a sudden movement. Here, we report an elderly female patient with a 1-month history of paroxysmal rigidity of the right limb. As the symptoms were characterized as paroxysmal, transient, and repetitive, her condition was initially thought to be epilepsy. Subsequent examinations showed no abnormality in the continuous video-electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomog

Idiopathic photosensitive occipital lobe epilepsy is a reflex, age- and localization-related syndrome. We describe the clinical and electroencephalographic features, therapy, and outcome of 16 children/adolescents with this syndrome. The cohort included 2 sets of siblings and 7 patients with other first- or second-degree relatives with a seizure history. All patients had occipital onset seizures and 15 had secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Seizure frequency was relatively low in all patients but one. Myoclonic seizures later developed in 2 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy

The recognition of photosensitivity depends upon the finding of an abnormal EEG response to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). Photosensitive epilepsy being the most common form of reflex epilepsy, has been studied most extensively and is reported to account for 5-10% of the epileptic population in general. One thousand unselected epileptics hailing from different parts of Northern India were screened for photosensitivity, both clinically and on a standard protocol of IPS-provoked EEG recordings. Six patients (mean age 14.5 +/- 3.56 yr) were found to be photosensitive: 4 had generalized, 1

Epilepsy affects approximately 25 % of people with intellectual disability (ID). Despite this high prevalence, evidence of health disparity exists in healthcare access and health outcomes for this population. Patients with ID experience additional challenges in accessing appropriate epilepsy care, and are at greater risk of experiencing inappropriate prescribing, polypharmacy and misdiagnosis compared with the general population. The expectations, attitudes and actions of physicians are key in addressing health inequalities, particularly those which disproportionately impact a specific group o

The myoclonic epilepsies constitute an heterogeneous group of entities characterized by primary generalized seizures, whose common critical manifestation is myoclonus. Within this group there is a subset of patients, identified by Janz in 1955 as "Impulsive petit mal" and later named "Janz juvenile myoclonic epilepsy" (JJME) by Delgado-Escueta. Its most important clinical features are myoclonus, expressed as mild to moderate jerks of neck, shoulders and arms. These jerks are more frequent when awakening; they can be caused by sleep deprivation and emotional stress, without consciousness impair

Spinal muscular atrophy with progressive myoclonic epilepsy (SMA-PME) is an extremely rare disorder related to the lysosomal storage disease, Farber lipogranulomatosis. Both disorders are autosomal recessive conditions caused by mutations in the ASAH1 gene encoding acid ceramidase. Farber disease is associated with joint deformities, lipomatous skin nodules, and often is fatal by 2-3 years of age; while SMA-PME is characterized by childhood-onset motor neuron disease and progressive myoclonic epilepsy. We report a case of SMA-PME with a novel mutation in the ASAH1 gene encoding acid ceramidase

Patients with photosensitive epilepsy are susceptible to seizures due to photoparoxysmal response (PPR). This response adversely precipitates factors that modify the functional status of the visual system. Such factors may or may not be evident superficially, but may lead to ocular defects due to trauma, hormonal imbalance, abnormal intraocular pressure (IOP), or any other reflex-inducing stimuli. The extent to which photosensitive epileptic patients suffer from PPR-related ocular defects has not been documented fully. In this investigation, ocular defects in patients with photosensitive epile

This study aimed to analyse the effect of neuropsychological activation methods on interictal epileptiform discharges, compared to standard activation methods, for both focal and generalized epilepsies. This was a multicentre, prospective study including 429 consecutive EEG recordings of individuals with confirmed or suspected diagnosis of epilepsy. Neuropsychological activation included reading aloud in foreign and native language, praxis and a letter cancelation task (each with a duration of three minutes). After counting interictal discharges in three-minute time windows, activation and inh

Epilepsy is a common primary neurological disorder characterized by the chronic tendency of a patient to experience epileptic seizures, which are abnormal body movements or cognitive states that result from excessive, hypersynchronous brain activity. Epilepsy has been found to have numerous etiologies and, although about two-thirds of epilepsies were classically considered idiopathic, the majority of those are now believed to be of genetic origin. Mutations in genes involved in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission have been associated with a broad range of epile

PURPOSE: The transient, mainly generalized, together with brief changes in EEG baseline immediately after eye closure, is called 'eye closure sensitivity' (ECS) which was first reported by Robinson in 1930 and there have been limited number of studies investigating ECS and epilepsy syndromes. Therefore, we aimed to reveal the possible relationship between ECS and the epilepsy syndromes in our adult patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult patients monitored in Hacettepe University Hospitals EEG Laboratory, from January 1995 to December 2005, were screened retrospectively for the presence of ECS.

The combination of thumb aplasia, epilepsy, cognitive impairment, skeletal deformities, and myopathy has not been previously reported. The patient is a 22-year-old man with congenital bilateral thumb aplasia, developmental delay, and cognitive impairment who suffered a first tonic-clonic seizure at the age of 16 and was treated with valproic acid (VPA). At the age of 22, lamotrigine was added due to seizure recurrences and absences. Neurological examination revealed cognitive impairment, latent strabismus, thumb aplasia, orthopedic anomalies of the feet, gnome calves, and absent tendon reflexe

A thiopental test 2 weeks after insertion of intracranial electrodes may be used to evaluate patients with refractory epilepsy for surgical therapy. Barbiturates normally produce beta activity on the electroencephalogram. The absence of this response in a monitored brain region implies focal cerebral dysfunction. We describe a technique used to perform this test and the resultant morbidity. The thiopental test consists of intravenous injection of thiopental, 25 mg, every 30 s until either corneal reflexes are abolished, 1,000 mg of thiopental has been administered, or adverse events occur. In

OBJECTIVE: Photosensitivity is known to occur predominantly in children and adolescents and with a clear female predominance. Little is known on the prevalence of photosensitivity in older patients (50+) and its phenotypical appearance.
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was performed investigating the prevalence of a photoparoxysmal EEG response (PPR) on at least one EEG during the period 2015-2021. Data were gathered from patients aged 50 years and older by retrieving clinical and EEG characteristics from existing medical records. Data on photosensitivity-related symptoms in daily

OBJECTIVE: Patients with epilepsy, mainly drug-resistant, have reduced heart rate variability (HRV), linked to an increased risk of sudden death in various other diseases. In this context, it could play a role in SUDEP. Generalized convulsive seizures (GCS) are one of the most consensual risk factors for SUDEP. Our objective was to assess the influence of GCS in HRV parameters in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 121 patients with refractory epilepsy admitted to our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. All patients underwent a 48-hour Holter recording. Only patie

PURPOSE: Eating epilepsy was previously known as a kind of focal reflex epilepsy. However, the development of eating-induced multiple generalized seizures and the associated EEG changes were rarely reported. Herein, we present a 13-year-old generalized epilepsy patient with eating-induced generalized seizures since the age of 5.
CASE PRESENTATION: The 13-year-old male patient had suffered from late-onset eating-induced epileptic spasms during the meal since the age of 5. Meanwhile, he also experienced spontaneous epileptic spasms during the period of sleep. The seizure frequency and type grad

BACKGROUND: Familial adult myoclonic epilepsy (FAME) is defined by autosomal dominant inheritance, adult onset of myoclonus of the extremities, infrequent epileptic seizures, nonprogressive course, abnormality of polyspikes and waves on examination by EEG and photosensitivity, giant somatosensory evoked potentials, enhancement of C reflex, and premyoclonus spike detected by means of the jerk-locked averaging EEG method. These findings were also observed in patients with benign adult familial myoclonic epilepsy (BAFME) and patients with familial cortical tremor. FAME and BAFME have been describ

Acute blindness is a rare presentation of epileptic seizures, referring to loss of sight without loss of consciousness associated with electroencephalographic (EEG) epileptic discharges, mainly representing an ictal phase but also either pre- or postictal. We report a series of 14 children with documented epileptic blindness, describing the accompanying fits and thereafter the response to therapy to resolve the blindness and control associated seizures. All patients experienced episodes of acute complete visual obscuration lasting for 1 to 10 minutes. Seven patients hadaccompanying generalized
