This article examines the relationship between the principle of double effect and justification for separation surgeries for conjoined twins. First, the principle of double effect is examined in light of its historical context. It is argued that it can only operate under an absolutist view of good and evil that is compatible with the Bible. Given this foundation for application, scenarios for separating conjoined twins are considered against the criteria for the principle of double effect. It is concluded that the principle of double effect cannot be applied to cases wherein one of the twins m

Amazing advances have been achieved over the last 20 years in transplantation. As well as the problems of rejection and its control there are other difficulties which have to be confronted. There are shortages of donors, problems of selection for treatment and the problems of funding this expensive form of therapy. The need to make choices has to be considered and the criteria in determining choice have to be determined. Of particular concern in paediatrics are the problems that arise in relation to rehabilitation and the need to provide a multi-disciplinary approach to care. Finally, we have

Caring for individuals with hematologic disorders is increasingly complex, and with medical complexity often comes ethical complexity. Prognostic uncertainty, stakeholder conflicts, and myriad other ethical challenges can contribute to situations that may benefit from ethics support. Through the presentation of 3 vignettes focusing on ethical dilemmas arising from hematology cases, we review the 4 phases of clinical ethics consultation: consult triage; ethics consult intake; stakeholder meeting(s) and additional data collection; and ethics analysis and recommendations. In tandem, we review som

INTRODUCTION: Clitoral reconstruction (CR) is a controversial surgical procedure performed for women who have undergone medically unnecessary, often ritualistic genital cutting involving the clitoris. Such cutting is known by several terms; we will use female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). Treatments offered to women affected by complications of FGM/C include defibulation (releasing the scar of infibulation to allow penetrative intercourse, urinary flow, physiological delivery, and menstruation) and CR to decrease pain, improve sexual response, and create a pre-FGM/C genital appearance.

BACKGROUND: ethodological congruence and ethical congruence in medical research protocols is essential to ensure scientific validity and adherence to bioethical principles. Methodological congruence refers to the alignment between objectives, study design, and data analysis, while ethical congruence involves compliance with principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate methodological congruence and ethical congruence of medical research protocols submitted between 2022 and 2025 in a high-specialty medical unit in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into healthcare presents unprecedented opportunities for innovation in diagnostics, treatment and patient care. However, this paradigm shift is accompanied by a concomitant series of critical regulatory and ethical challenges. Relying on the pillars of the New Institutional Theory, this study undertakes a comprehensive examination of how ethical AI in healthcare is discursively constructed in European Commission’s (EC) policy communications and how institutional narratives shape emerging governance frameworks.

The preceding article in this issue of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal presents the argument that "moral fundamentalism," the position that international bioethics rests on "basic" or "fundamental" moral prinicples that are universally accepted in all eras and cultures, collapses under a variety of multicultural and postmodern critiques. The present article looks to the contractarian tradition of Hobbes and Locke -- as reinterpreted by David Gauthier, Robert Nozick, and John Rawls -- for an alternative justification for international bioethics. Drawing on the central themes of this tra

Normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) is a surgical technique that can improve the quality and number of organs recovered for donation after the determination of death by circulatory criteria. Despite its promise, adoption of NRP has been hindered because of unresolved ethical issues. To inform stakeholders, this scoping review provides an impartial overview of the major ethical controversies surrounding NRP. We undertook this review according to a modified 5-step methodology proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. Publications were retrieved through MEDLINE and Embase. Gray literature was sourced fr

INTRODUCTION: The integration of generative artificial intelligence into higher education has reshaped students' academic practices and blurred normative boundaries around academic integrity. While prior research has focused mainly on attitudes and usage intentions, limited attention has been paid to students' AI ethical decision-making in academic scenarios and its psychological mechanisms. This study examined the associations among AI ethics guidance, academic ethics course experience, moral cognition, cognitive complexity, and AI ethical decision-making. It tested whether moral cognition me

PURPOSE: Ethical questions are poorly investigated specifically in radiation oncology. The objective of the study was to identify and understand the main ethical issue in radiation oncology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quantitative analysis was based on the answers to a questionnaire of 200 professionals from 22 radiation oncology departments. The questionnaire mainly aimed to characterize the main ethical issue. A monocentric qualitative analysis was based on semi-structured interviews focused on the main identified ethical issue, carried out with eight technologists, and 20 patients undergoing

The unprecedented outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa has raised several novel ethical issues for global outbreak preparedness. It has also illustrated that familiar ethical issues in infectious disease management endure despite considerable efforts to understand and mitigate such issues in the wake of past outbreaks. To improve future global outbreak preparedness and response, we must examine these shortcomings and reflect upon the current state of ethical preparedness. To this end, we focus our efforts in this article on the examination of one substantial area: ethical guida

INTRODUCTION: Medical ethics is the branch of ethics that deals with moral issues in medical practice. Many postgraduate training programs have developed educational interventions in ethics to meet accreditation standards and prepare learners for certification examinations and clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the attitude of residents in King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) toward the need for ethics education and identify the most effective methods of teaching ethical issues.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of residents in different specialties at KA

Prisons are increasingly being called upon to provide end-of-life (EOL) care within the restrictive correctional environment. Several relatively recent phenomena have brought medical ethics to the forefront of prison EOL care-including aging behind bars, a paradigm shift in prison culture, the increasing rate of in-prison deaths, and the corresponding prison hospice movement. This article examines prominent ethical issues that emerge for prison personnel who are tasked with providing care to terminally ill offenders by presenting three offender composite characters that exemplify dying offende

Uterus transplantation (UTx) became a clinical reality with the birth of the first baby in 2014. Following increased success, the procedure has now transitioned to clinical practice in many institutions throughout the world. With a rising number of donors, recipients, and babies born from this procedure, and with more institutions offering UTx, ethical challenges have evolved while novel aspects gained prominence. Here, the Ethics Committees of the International Uterus Transplantation Society, a section of The Transplantation Society, summarize current and future ethical challenges in UTx and

BACKGROUND: New graduate transition into the workforce is challenging and can involve managing ethical tensions. Ethical tensions cause new graduates to doubt their capabilities due to their lack of experience. To support new graduates, we need to know what these ethical tensions are.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the ethical tensions perceived to occur in practice for new graduate health professionals.
RESEARCH DESIGN: This qualitative systematic review involved a search of five databases (Medline, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL and Scopus) which resulted in the retrieval of 3554 papers. After the two-phase

BACKGROUND: Persons experiencing severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) represent a small but vulnerable group in mental health care and society. Research on this population is limited, despite significant ethical challenges in their care. These challenges include the severity of their illness, limited social networks, communication difficulties, impaired decision-making capacity, and, at times, disruptive behavior.
PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the ethical themes that emerge in the care of persons experiencing SPMI, both in general and at the end of life. Specifically, we examine
