Somatosensory evoked potentials in acute neurological decompression illness.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) were recorded on posterior tibial nerve stimulation during compression in 21 episodes of acute neurological decompression illness (DCI) involving 20 patients. A further two cases were monitored immediately after treatment only. The results were compared with previously published normal data from this laboratory and with recordings obtained during the compression of four normal volunteers. Compression had no effect on SSEPs in normal subjects: SSEP latency abnormalities were found in 17 of the episodes of DCI. An SSEP improvement at final recording was no

Visually evoked potentials in boys with developmental dyslexia.

Pattern reversal visually evoked potentials were examined in a group of 16 boys with developmental dyslexia and 17 controls matched for sex, age and intelligence. Delineation of hypothesis was done with an independent pilot study. Wave form differences between groups could be observed over the left central lead in the pilot and replication study. Only 44% of the dyslexies showed a negative component between 110 and 215 ms after stimulus onset in comparison to more than 80% of the controls. The lack of this component was most prominent in dyslexies whose spelling scores were more than 1.5 stand

Cerebral evoked potentials in the chronic vertebrobasilar insufficiency.

The syndrome of chronic vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) consists in a complex of symptoms, often mild and transient, and lacks a complementary system of objective paraclinical investigations able to certify its existence. The study of somato-sensory, auditory and visual evoked potentials in VBI showed the occurrence of changes regardless of the symptom importance both in disorders due to extrinsic causes: a) compression by a damage of the cervical column (92.9%, 50% and 63.9%, respectively; b) diseases of the cervical spinal cord (92.9% and 46.6%, respectively) and in disorders due to some

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials following meningitis in children.

The report concerns findings for brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) recorded in 116 children, aged between a few days and 7 years, having suffered from bacterial meningitis. 26% of cases occurred between birth and 6 months, 55% between 6 months and 2 years, and 19% after 2 years of age. Hemophilus was the most common bacteria (49%), followed by Pneumococcus (22%) and Meningococcus (15%). Neurological complications were found in 30% of the meningitis cases and accounted for 85% of all complications found. 29% of BAEPs were abnormal, of which 47% revealed transmission, 32% endocochlear

[Changes in somatosensory evoked potentials in pharmacogenic myoclonia].

Transient increases of the early cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) were observed in 9 patients who received antidepressant and/or neuroleptic treatment. All patients developed myoclonus, and 2 had grand mal seizures. Three cases--one 20-, one 17- and one 15-year-old patient--are presented in detail. Similar observations have been reported in elderly patients. Possible underlying mechanisms and the potential value of the SSEP in identifying and monitoring patients at risk of developing psychotropic drug-induced side-effects are briefly discussed.

Clinical application of motion-onset visual evoked potentials.

The results of motion-onset visual evoked potentials and pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials were compared in 5 adults with amblyopia, in 13 patients with unilateral retrobulbar neuritis and in 62 patients with multiple sclerosis. While the pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials had reduced amplitudes and prolonged latencies in all amblyopic eyes, the motion-onset visual evoked potentials were normal. Thus, motion-onset visual evoked potentials cannot be used for diagnosis of amblyopia. In patients with retrobulbar neuritis, both types of visual evoked potentials were delayed on stimu

Study of evoked potentials in human African trypanosomiasis.

Human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has a stage of neurological involvement characterized by the onset of diffuse meningoencephalitis with sleep disturbances and decreased wakefulness. The pathogenesis of this disease is not well understood. We studied auditory, visual, sensory, and motor evoked potentials in 16 patients with trypanosomiasis in the early stage of meningoencephalitis. In all patients, the brain-stem auditory evoked response (BAER) and the pattern-reversal visual evoked response (PVER) were normal. On the other hand, abnormalities of the somatosensory evoked respo

EEG and evoked potentials in HIV-infected children.

Forty-seven HIV-seropositive children were investigated by EEG and evoked potentials (BAEP, SEP). Twenty-three children were symptomatic (P2), 8 seropositive without symptoms (P1), and 16 children were less than 15 months of age (P0). Some of them were investigated at different stages of HIV infection. During the neonatal period, 7 newborns of drug-addicted mothers had seizures and frequent spikes and sharp waves in their EEGs. Among (P2) children 6/23 showed background slowing and 1 had rhythmic theta activity (6 with and 1 without neurological symptoms). In BAEP, bilateral prolonged interpea

Magnetic motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in masseter muscles.

Electromyographic responses of the masseter muscles and orbicularis oris muscles following transcranial magnetic stimulations were recorded with surface and needle electrodes. MEPs in masseter muscles (latency 6.9 +/- 0.71 ms, mean +/- SD) due to activation of controlateral cortico-nuclear connections were evoked by magnetic stimulations at 4 cm laterally to the vertex on the biauricular line. These MEPs were followed bilaterally by a silent period lasting about 20 ms and, less constantly, by a later silent period lasting up to 80 ms. The ipsilateral responses to the same stimuli presented sho

[Trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials in workers handling trichloroethylene].

Trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEP) were studied in 33 workers manipulating trichlorethylene for 3 to 22 years and in 33 control subjects. A significant excessive latency delay of N13, P17 and N45 waves in workers was found. Evoked potential abnormalities found in 15 exposed subjects (45%) were as following: excessive latency delay in 9 cases (27%), decrease of amplitude in 2 cases (6%) and asymmetrical responses in 4 cases (12%). Among 5 workers (15%) presenting clinical abnormalities of trigeminal nerve impairment, only one had normal evoked potential. TSEP were altered in 11 w

Dermatomal somatosensory evoked potentials in brachial plexus injuries.

The dermatomally stimulated somatosensory evoked potential is an essentially painless, noninvasive procedure that can add useful information to the diagnosis of the site and extent of brachial plexus injuries. In this study, 13 patients with unilateral brachial plexus injuries who had previously undergone conventional electromyographic testing underwent somatosensory evoked potential recording with median, ulnar, radial, musculocutaneous nerve and C5, C6, C7, C8 and T1 dermatomal stimulation. There was no significant difference in the peak latencies, interpeak latencies, or amplitudes of the m

Auditory evoked potentials in vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are affected by stroke or migraine in the vertebrobasilar arterial system. Some studies have reported BAEP changes in vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), but others have shown no alterations. We recorded BAEPs in 35 patients with TIAs in the vertebrobasilar system who did not have a stroke, other neurologic disease or significant hearing loss. Thirty patients were recorded after resolution of symptoms, while five individuals still had some resolving signs or symptoms. TIA patients as a group had longer interpeak latencies, but I-III,

[Nerve conduction measurement based on lumbosacral evoked potentials].

Lumbosacral evoked potentials (EP) following stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle were recorded with surface electrodes at 5 cm intervals from the lower lumbar to the lower thoracic levels and the site of maximum amplitude was determined by monopolar and bipolar recordings in 27 normal subjects, 37 epileptics receiving anticonvulsant therapy and 22 patients with subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON). The amplitude of EP in monopolar recording with a reference on the contralateral knee was usually maximum 10 cm above the Jacoby line, which nearly corresponded to the 1st lumb

Suppression of motor evoked potentials by inhalation anesthetics.

The purpose of this study was to record evoked action potentials from forearm muscles in response to single-shock supramaximal electrical stimulation of motor cortex in room air and under different concentrations (0.5-1.5%) of isoflurane, enflurane, and halothane anesthesia in rats. Anesthesia was induced with a mixture of fentanyl and droperiodol, which was then followed by 10-min inhalation of each gas anesthetic under controlled ventilation. Increasing concentrations of isoflurane (n = 12) caused a progressive increase in onset latency and a decrease in peak-to-peak amplitude and duration.

[Evaluation of post-traumatic coma using evoked potentials].

In 130 cases of post-traumatic coma a study of multimodality evoked potentials (MEP) was carried out shortly after the traumatism (within 72 h). According to the morphology of the records they were classified in grades (I-IV) in agreement with Greenberg et al. The worst grade of EP in the different types was related to the outcome at 6 months, distinguishing between focal lesions and diffuse lesions. Only a group (22.9%) of the 109 patients in which the auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (ABEP) could be studied, showed severe disorders (grade III-IV). There was a significant correlation bet

Evolution of visual evoked potentials in optic neuritis.

The visual evoked potential (VEP) latency was either abnormally prolonged or absent in the involved eye of 47 patients with optic neuritis. Twenty-two of these patients with known multiple sclerosis (MS), had similar abnormalities to 25 patients with no clinical evidence of MS. Follow-up clinical assessment and VEP were done 10 to 42 (mean 22) months later in 34 patients. In 15 of 34 patients with no VEP from the involved eye during initial examination, 6 returned to normal, 8 had prolonged latencies and 1 still had no response at follow up. Of 19 patients who initially had prolonged latencies

Visual evoked potentials in a patient with prosopagnosia.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from a 53-year-old man with prosopagnosia during presentation of slides of known and unknown faces and under two control conditions. ANOVA comparisons with a normal male group showed no differences in P100 amplitude, P300 amplitude or P300 latency. There were no significant evoked potential differences between the patient and controls specifically related to the face conditions. There was, however, a significant delay in the latency of P100 from both hemispheres during all types of stimuli. This prolonged latency was asymmetrical, showing a right s

Somatosensory evoked potentials in chronic alcoholics with spasticity.

Somatosensory evoked potentials to median and bilateral tibial nerve stimulation were investigated in eight chronic alcoholics with spasticity, 12 patients with alcoholic polyneuropathy, and 11 normal subjects. Central conduction velocities from the third lumbar vertebra to the fifth cervical vertebra and from the 12th thoracic vertebra to the fifth cervical vertebra were significantly lower in the chronic alcoholics with spasticity than in the alcoholic polyneuropathy group and in the healthy nonalcoholic group. The result indicates that chronic alcoholics with spasticity have conduction dist
